Experience

Guide
Welcome
Hello!

My name is Jerry, and on behalf of the AltSchool Africa team, we're so glad you
made it to this point. You've taken the first step on an audacious journey. If you
stay on course, you'd be sure to experience a great deal of growth and
development.

Here we go!
School of
Engineering
I'm wondering if I already said congratulations! You
deserve all the accolades. Before now, you might
have wondered what this experience is all about. I
know, you have the perfect idea of what this is, but I'll
still give you a definition.

AltSchool Africa's School of Engineering is a learning

initiative created with an intent to help thousands of
Africans learn the necessary tech skills required for
them to add positive value to engineering teams
spread across the world.

The reason why we are on this mission is a glaring

one. We believe that far beyond natural endowments,
Africa's biggest assets will continue to be its people.
Our people are superstars, they excel in everything
they do. The world, on the other hand, has advanced
in many ways. Today, engineering teams all over the
world are on a constant search for problem-solvers
who can combine skill and ability to find solutions. Our
people are already doing this in many ways, but
there's room for a whole more.

This is our way of ensuring that more Africans get to

reach that stage where they can maximize their
potential, solving problems and giving value, as
superstars that they are, starting with you.
What You'll
Learn
The goal is to get you equipped with everything you
need to excel in your tech career. This includes a
combination of technical and non-technical skills. As
you already know, we've got 3 learning tracks, which
are:

Front End Engineering

Back End Engineering
Cloud/ DevOps Engineering

To add to this, some other major concepts we'd be

factoring in are:

Use of English
Soft Skills
Scrum
Open Source
Technical Writing
Interview Preparations

At the end of the 9 months of this experience, you'd

be ready to join any team, anywhere in the world, and
kill it! Brace up, this is going to be quite a journey. I
know you're bringing your A game.
Resources
Virtual Workspace (Slack)

Our primary communication channel will be Slack.

Slack will serve as the medium for passing important
information and giving updates. The app will also be
our means for giving feedback, and serve as our
playground all through this experience. You'll be
geing an invite to join the workspace.

Learning Management System (LMS)

The LMS is where all our learning will take place. You'll
get access to watch learning content videos, aempt
quizzes, and even give feedback on each lesson, all in
one space! From start to finish, the LMS will be with
you, I advise that you get familiar immediately you get
that invite to sign up on the LMS.

Hopin/Meet/Zoom

Right from the start, we'll need to see ourselves a lot

for a bunch of reasons; meetings, design feedback
sessions, learning circle meetups, fun sessions, and
more. We'd need some of these virtual conferencing
tools to make sure that we keep up with ourselves.
Key
Players
As much as we'd love to, we won't be able to have
everyone complete this journey. Some of your
colleagues will have to leave us when we hit certain
milestones. You know, rules and all. It's important that
you reciprocate the energy we'd be giving to you
from day 1 to the last day. Let's look at some of the
critical factors to your journey.

Aendance

You'd need to show up for at least 80% of the time

you'd be required to show up. Please, show up, it's the
first step to achieving anything, and we recognize
how important it is. You'd need to start off with a high
level of consistency, and maintain it.

Assessments

We'd be measuring how well you do with tasks and

assessments right from the jump. How well you do on
these assessments will contribute to your ability to
continue with us, or not. We understand you may not
be the best at this thing just yet. However, it'd be nice
to see some improvement as we proceed.
Engagement

I think I mentioned earlier, we'd like to really feel your

energy throughout this experience. The only way we
can do this is when you engage. Please try to show
up, engage, and express yourself as well. You know
that thing our teachers used to say about passing
through school and also leing school pass through
you? Yea, that part.
Feedback
We'd really love it if you can share
suggestions on how we can make this
experience a more fulfilling one for you as
we proceed with the journey. A separate
channel exists on your Slack workspace for
this sole purpose. Please, feel absolutely free
to drop feedback and suggestions as they
come to you.

You made it this far? I'm happy to see we're

geing along so well. I really can't wait to
meet you. Wishing you godspeed on this
audacious journey!
