In less than twenty years, the mobile phone has gone from being rare, expensive equipment
of the business elite to a popular, low-cost personal item. In many countries, mobile phones
outnumber land-line phones.
Mobile phone use can be an important matter of social discourtesy: phones ringing during funerals
or weddings; in toilets, cinemas and theatres. Users often speak loudly, leading to bookshops,
libraries, cinemas, doctors’ offices and places of worship prohibiting their use. Trains, particularly
those involving long-distance services, often offer a “quiet carriage” when phone use is prohibited.
In Japan, it is generally considered impolite to talk using a phone on any train.
