La Niña Update
as of 22 February 2023 Conditions in the Tropical Pacific - Atmosphere
Tradewinds and upper level winds

C ➢ Positive OLR anomalies (suppressed convection and precipitation) were

located over the central tropical Pacific Ocean. Negative OLR anomalies
(enhanced convection and precipitation) were observed near the
C Philippines and over western Indonesia.

➢ Low-level (850-hPa) easterly wind anomalies were evident across the

western and central equatorial Pacific Ocean. https://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/analysis_monitoring/lanina/enso_evolution-status-fcsts-web.pdf
➢ Upper-level (200-hPa) westerly wind anomalies were observed across
the central and east-central equatorial Pacific, with anomalous
cyclones on either side of the equator.

ENSO Alert System Status:
La Niña Advisory

La Niña still continues to weaken and transition to ENSO-neutral conditions

during February-March-April (FMA) 2023 season is expected.
La Niña increases the likelihood of having above normal rainfall conditions that could lead
to potential adverse impacts (such as heavy rainfall, floods, flashfloods and landslides)
over highly vulnerable areas.
