Class Assignment XI

1. Air at 80F and 80% relative humidity is cooled to 51F at a constant pressure of 1 atm. Use the
psychrometric chart to calculate the fraction of the water that condenses, and the rate at which heat

must be removed to deliver 1000 ft of humid air at final condition.

2. A stream of air at 30C and 10% relative humidity is humidified in an adiabatic spray tower operating
at P~1 atm. The emerging air is to have a relative humidity of 40%.
(i) Determine the absolute humidity and the adiabatic saturation temperature of the entering
air.
(ii) Use the psychrometric chart to calculate (i) the rate at which water must be added to
humidify 1000 kg/h of entering air, and the temperature of the exiting air.

3. Given a dry-bulb temperature of 40C and wet bulb temperature of 30C, find (a) dew-point
temperature, (b) humidity ratio, (c) humid volume, (d) relative humidity, (e) humid heat, and (f)
enthalpy of air-water vapor mixtures.

4. A water-cooling tower is to be designed with a blower capacity of 75 m /s. The moist air enters at
25C and wet bulb temperature of 20C. The exit air leaves at 30C and relative humidity of 80%.
Determine the flow rate of water in kg/s, that can be cooled if the cooled water is not recycled. The
water enters at 40C and leaves the tower at 25C.

5. A stream of warm air with a dry-bulb temperature of 40C and a wet bulb temperature of 32C is
mixed adiabatically with a stream of saturated cool air at 18C. The dry air mass flow rates of the
warm and cool air streams are 8 and 6 kg/s respectively. Assuming a total pressure of 1 atm,
determine (a) temperature, (b) specific humidity, and (c) relative humidity of mixture.

6. A rotary dryer operating at atmospheric pressure dries 10 tons/day of wet grain at 70F, from a
moisture content of 10% to 1% moisture. The air flow is countercurrent to the flow of grain, enters at
225F dry bulb and 110F wet-bulb temperature, and leaves at 125F dry-bulb (see figure).

Determine: (a) the humidity of entering and leaving air if the latter is saturated, (b) the water
removal in pounds per hour, (c) the daily product output in pounds per day, and (d) the heat
input to the dryer. Assume that there is no heat loss from the dryer, that the grain is
discharged at 110F, and that its specific heat is 0.18.

7. A dryer produces 180 kg/hr of product containing 8% water from a feed stream that contains
1.25 g of water per gram of material. The air enters the dryer at 100C dry-bulb and a wet
bulb temperature of 38C; the exit air leaves at 53C dry-bulb temperature and 60% relative
humidity. Part of the exit air is mixed with fresh air supplied at 21C, 52% relative humidity
as shown in the figure below. Calculate the air and heat supplied to the heater, neglecting any
heat lost by the system. The specific heat of the product is 0.18.
