Spring 2024 Math 101 Exam 1 Solutions

1. (4*6 pt) Evaluate the following limits. If the limit does not exist, explain why not.

x − x2
(a) lim √ .
x→1 1 − x

x(1 − x3/2 ) √ √
= lim √ = lim x(1 + x + x) = 3.
x→1 1− x x→1

(b) lim x3 sin(1/x) − 2x2 .

x→∞
= limx→∞ x2 (x sin(1/x) − 2) = ∞ since x sin(1/x) → 1 as x → ∞.
(c) lim (x − ⌊x⌋), where ⌊x⌋ is the greatest integer not exceeding x.
x→∞
DNE since it takes all values in [0, 1) as x → ∞.
tan5 x
(d) lim .
x→0 tan4 x + cos2 (1/x2 )

= 0 by sandwich theorem since

tan5 x
0⩽ ⩽ | tan x| → 0.
tan4 x + cos2 (1/x2 )

2. (a) (13 pt) Let

 1 − cos x
if x ̸= 0,
f(x) = x
0 if x = 0.
Determine whether the derivative of f(x) is continuous at x = 0.
Note that
1 − cos x sin2 x 1
f ′ (0) = lim 2
= lim 2
= ,
x→0 x x→0 x (1 + cos x) 2
and
x sin x + cos x − 1 sin x 1 − cos x
f ′ (x) = 2
= −
x x x2
for x ̸= 0. Hence, limx→0 f ′ (x) = f ′ (0), which shows that f ′ is indeed continuous
at x = 0.
(b) (13 pt) Find the exact number of real roots of f(x) = 2x4 − 3x3 + 3x2 − 4x + 1.

f ′ = 8x3 − 9x2 + 6x − 4, f ′′ = 24x2 − 18x + 6 = 6(4x2 − 3x + 1) > 0.

Hence, by MVT, f ′ is increasing. Since f ′ (0) < 0 and f ′ (1) = 8 − 9 + 6 − 4 > 0,
it has exactly one zero by IVT.
f(0) > 0, f(1) < 0 and f(2) > 0. Thus, f has at least two roots by IVT. If f had
3 zeros, then it would follow from MVT that f ′ has two zeros. Therefore, f has
exactly 2 zeros.
