His return alerted the Spaniards, and they paid close attention to
Rizal's every move.
Rizal arrived in Manila. After lodging himself and his sister at the
Oriente Hotel in Binondo, he went to Malacanang to pay a
courtesy call and to interview the Governor-General Despujol.

As a physician - he provided free medicine to his patients and used his surgical skills to
treat people.
As an engineer - he constructed a waterworks system to provide clean water for the
people.
As an Educator - he established a school. Instead of money as a payment, he made his
students do community work. He taught them cultural values and manners as well.
As an agriculturist - he imported agricultural machinery and introduced to the native
farmers of Dapitan the modern agricultural methods.
As a citizen - he drained the marshes of Dapitan to get rid of malaria-carrying
mosquitoes. He also made coconut oil lamps as a lighting system posted in dark streets.

The misfortune and challenges that marred and befallen Rizal's life
could wrecked a man of weaker stuff, but God gave a light of hope
with the arrival of Josephine Bracken.
Rizal and Josephine fell in love and decided to marry. Engr. Taufer,
her father objected. Also, Fr. Obach refused to marry them.
after everything, they went to the beach one night and united
themselves before Heaven. Therefore, an unofficial marriage.

Rizal's thoughts:
Rizal objected to Bonifacio’s bold project stating that such would be a veritable
suicide.
Katipunan leaders should do everything possible to prevent the premature flow of
native blood.
Rizal instructed Valenzuela that it would be in the best interests of the Katipunan
to get first the support of the rich and influential people of Manila to strengthen
their cause.

*The Katipunan were short of arms and funds to fight, so Rizal prevented
unnecessary loss.*
