Motor Control-2 Wire

By: Saheed Reid and Jayden Gordon

What are motor controls?
Motor controls are the use of appropriate starters and associated
control devices, Such as limit switches, pressure switches, timing
relays, wired in such a way that the motor operates in specific ways
under the set conditions.

the controller can range from something simple to something very

complex however the common function of all controllers is to control
the operation of an electric motor.
What are motor controls cont’d
Control circuits can be designed to function manually or
automatically. A manual circuit requiring the a person to initiate the
action for the circuit to operate. For an automatic control circuit
responds to changes in the systems and reacts accordingly without
human interference.

Many machines and industrial processes work with an automatic

control circuit. Control Circuits are often referred to by the amount of
conductors used in the control circuit, they’re 2 types of control
circuits; two-wire and three-wire control circuits.
Two-wire control circuit

Also known as low voltage release, it is called as such because it only requires 2
wires to connect the control device to starting coil. It is connected in series with
the starting coil using a maintained contact control device, the control device used
may be the following: a toggle switch, pressure switch, float switch, limit switch or
a thermostat.

When a starter is required to function automatically without the attention of an

operator this scheme is used. In the case of a power failure or the supply voltage
dips below a set level, while the control contacts are closed the starter will drop
out(low voltage release). The starter will pick up back automatically on power
restoration.
Uses & Sources
Two-wire control circuits are typically used in remote of inaccessible
installations where as soon as power is restored equipment is immediately
return to service. However note that while the two-wire control scheme
provides low voltage release, the operator is not protected in the case the
machine is re-energized suddenly.
