ILEC Speaking Part 4 – Teacher’s Notes

Description
This activity focuses on getting students to actively listen to what their partner has said on a
topic and developing their responses to questions accordingly.

Time required: 30 minutes

Materials Student’s Worksheet
required: Sample Task

Aims: To focus on the importance of actively listening

To encourage candidates to relate what they say to what has already
been said on a topic
To practise dealing with Part 4 questions

Procedure
1 Ask students what they know about Part 4 of the Speaking test, and how it relates to
Part 3. [Part 4 is an extension of the collaborative discussion that they did in Part 3 of
the test. The interlocutor joins the discussion and asks the candidates questions.
Point out to students that they may be asked for their views on any of the questions,
that is the same or a different question to the one asked to their partner.]
2 Ask students to look at Exercise 1, which focuses them on giving short ‘open’
answers in response to the questions allowing them time to think more about the
detail of their answer. When students have matched their answers, check possible
responses (see Key to Student’s Worksheet).
3 Ask students to look at Exercise 2, which is an extension of Exercise 1. In this
exercise students have to continue in an appropriate way from the short response
given by another student. Monitor, and give brief feedback when students have
finished.
4 Now ask students to do Exercise 3 in which they use the Sample Task (hand out
copies). Ask students to work in groups of three, with one student acting as
interlocutor and the other two as candidates. The task requires students to listen
carefully to what their partner says about a question and then to begin their answer
by making reference to something their partner said. Monitor, and give brief feedback
when students have finished.

show you feel differently: For me, X is much more important ...
change focus / topic: I think the real issue is ... I think the problem is
more specific.

Look at the Sample Task. Work in groups of three again. One student should act as
interlocutor and the other two as candidates. Candidates should try to use the language
