CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Solid waste comes in different forms such as plastic garbage. These

are waste that cannot be easily thrown since it is non-biodegradable or solid.

This waste can cause environmental problems such as unpleasant

contaminants and toxins to air, water, and land most probably inside the

school grounds. According to State of Play (2018), an organization focusing

on waste management, students and adults learn about protecting the

environment and possibly transfer the same waste-reduction techniques to

their own homes. Students also gain access to opportunities to participate in

service-based community events. For example, students might decide to

begin waste reduction drives in their community. Reducing plastic waste in

schools decreases the cost of waste removal and energy consumption.

However, people do not know the importance of segregati6on and as a

consequence, there are a lot of problems concerning waste disposal and

segregation. But the fact is solid waste has become a tenacious issue

worldwide, it has been increasing exponentially due to urbanization and the

increase of population (Gupta, 2023). In India, solid waste management is

one of the most significant problems that is dealt with. Indian population has

grown increasingly to over 1.2 billion. This population growth has seen an

increasingly larger population concentration in urban areas due to the

availability of more employment sources (Kenekar, 2018). Urban India

generates millions of tons of waste collected annually, and it has been waste

management is such a

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter is a discussion of the literature and the result of other

related research to which the present study is related or has some bearing or

similarity. This gave the author enough background to understand the study.

The Level Effectiveness of Solid Waste Separation

According to Ezeudu (2021), waste segregation is the sorting and

separation of waste types to facilitate recycling and correct onward disposal.

Waste segregation is an ideal way to diminish the impact of landfills on the

amount environment as well as health issues that can result from improperly

disposed of wastes and toxins. Sorting waste makes it easier to understand

how to reduce general waste output, identify items that can be reduced, and

set aside items that should be recycled.

However, poor solid waste management is among the major

challenges in developing countries (Mendoza,2022). Ranging from non-

existing collection systems to ineffective disposal causes air pollution, and

water and soil contamination. Open and unsanitary landfills contribute to the

contamination of drinking water and can cause infection and transmit disease.

Moreover, improper solid waste dumpsites pose a major risk to both human

health and the environment (Mohamed,2023).

To add more, solid-state segregation plays a vital role in reducing and

recycling as it enables recycling raw materials and reducing the amount of

waste sent to landfills or incinerators, which helps mitigate environmental

impact and especially minimize environmental pollution. Furthermore, an

METHODOLOGY

Presented in this chapter were the discussions on the research design,

the research locale, the population and sample, the research instrument, the

data collection, the statistical tools, and the ethical consultations.

Research Design

The study used the descriptive correlational method as the research

design. According to Bhat (2023), Descriptive correlational research is a type

of research design that tries to explain the relationship between two or more

variables without making any claims about cause and effect. It includes

collecting and analyzing data on at least two variables to see if there is a link

between them. The researchers also chose a questionnaire to assess the

level of effectiveness of solid waste separation and analytics for the reduction

of solid waste. This research aimed to describe the effectiveness of solid

waste separation and the reduction of solid-state in Marber National High

School in Bansalan Davao Del Sur.

Research Locale

The study was conducted in Bansalan Davao del Sur, Region XI,

Philippines. It was conducted at Marber National High School. It is located at

Barangay Marber Bansalan Davao del Sur.

CHAPTER IV

RESULT AND DISCUSSION

This chapter discusses the statistical data gathered by the

researchers related to the assessment of the student’s level of awareness of

solid waste management and waste reduction at Marber National High

School. This chapter consists of a Tubular presentation of data, interpretation,

and review of related literature support of the data. Based on the

corresponding results, the tables were appropriately interpreted. The

researchers identified the demographic profile of the participants, the level of

student awareness, and the relationship between the two variables using

specific statistical tools.

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter discusses the summary, conclusions, and

recommendations of this study. This chapter discusses the findings and

results of the researchers to determine the significance of students' level of

awareness of solid waste management and solid waste reduction based on

the data that has been gathered.

5.1 SUMMARY

1. It clearly showed that the 15-16 years old has the highest total

number of participants. The highest age based on the study we gathered was

20 -19 years old followed by 18-17 and so on, it showed that 15-16 years old

have the highest and 19-20 years old have the lowest. This age demographic

showed that 15-16-year-olds had a large number of participants who

answered the study that we conducted.

2. It showed that the female gender contributed a large fraction of

having the highest participant who answered our survey questionnaire,

therefore the male gender contributed the least fraction of the participants.

The result showed that the female gender got the highest total and the male

had the lowest.

3. It showed that the strand of Grade 11 Students who got the highest

number of participants and with the highest contribution is the Humanities and

Social Sciences (Humss) for having 43 participants and the highest total

numerical value, and the TVL with the participants of 35, then the GAS

students has the 20 participants.
