Can you describe your daily commute to the office and back home?
On Daily basis, I usually book a ride on commute apps like Indrive or Yango etc at
the minimum possible rate and the same routine for the return way except on the way
back I share a ride with a colleague due to increased traffic at Shahre-Faisal during
rush hours.
Due to the non-availability of my family car and a spike in fuel prices, I prefer public
transport as it is convenient concerning availability and affordability.
So far , its been a rough journey as it has its own perks and cons. First, I am always
concerned for my safety and security because of the increasing street crimes. Secondly,
I don’t have the advantage of my own car to make stops or do daily groceries or chores
outside of the house as the apps charge a lot for stops and the journey is always
straight from pickup point to destination. But on the bright side, I save up a good
chunk of my transportation budget which would have cost me a lot on my own car.
I feel safe when someone is with me sharing the journey otherwise I always feel scared
that I will get my phone stolen or the worst case scenario can get shot down during
snatching.
Yes, my aunt faced a very scary snatching and harassment incident. The rickshaw driver
tried to take her to a really secluded area, From which she escaped by screaming and
gathering the attention of the locals in that area. I always get chills thinking about this
incident
Timing and Accessibility:
How do the public transport schedules align with your university/work schedule?
I usually order my rickshaw at my convenience as the public buses are always fully
packed during my traveling hours.
On the positive aspect, I reach the office early by using a cab service as compared to
public buses which usually cost me a lot higher at the same time.
Gender-Specific Services:
Are you aware of any gender-specific transportation services, like pink buses, in
Karachi? Would you consider using them?
Not really, I usually avoid traveling in buses as they are very crowded and full of very
weird creeps that can lead to certain unwanted or inappropriate situations.
Decision-Making Factors:
What factors would influence you to change your current mode of transportation?
The hike in fuel prices OR if I able to arrange my mode of transport.
Final Thoughts:
Is there anything else about your experience with public transportation that you think
is important to share?
I think there is a lot of effort the Government can put into providing better options to
the public by utilizing all the possibilities and by gathering more sponsors and investors
to make transport clean, safe and secure for women as well as make suitable
restrictions and policies.
