Topic 4: Well Planning and Construction

Review

This topic covers the different types of wellbore configurations and the
processes involved in well construction.

Content

There are 5 types of well considered in this topic. These are noted below:
• vertical well;
• deviated well;
• horizontal well;
• extended reach well;
• multilateral/multibranch well.

These are illustrated in Figure 1.

MULTILATERAL /
VERTICAL DEVIATED HORIZONTAL MULTIBRANCH

EXTENDED REACH

Multilateral wells are more expensive to drill, but can produce several horizons together
(or separately) and thereby increase the economic viability of a field. This technology
may be utilised in Oman, where, for example, there are fields with several channel sand
pockets. Prior to multilateral/multibranch drilling, three vertical wells were drilled. Now
however, one well can be drilled that will hit all three channel sand targets.

Well Profile

Offshore wells have a typical well profile, as shown in Figure 4.

The well profile shown in Figure 4 is the typical well profile to date. However, slimhole
drilling and monobore completion technology may well change this typical well profile.

The Drilling Team

An example of the personnel involved with the drilling of a well offshore from a mobile
drilling rig is given in table 1.
