1. What are the four criteria used to assess the IELTS Speaking test?

 Fluency and coherence

 Lexical resource
 Grammatical range and accuracy
 Pronunciation

2. What does 'Fluency and Coherence' refer to in the IELTS Speaking

test? how clear and structured is your speech.
Coherence literally means being logical and consistent. refers to
how you expand and explain your answers with explanations and
examples, answer the question being asked and how you connect
sentences together using discourse markers and tenses.

3. How is 'Lexical Resource' assessed in the IELTS Speaking test?

Lexical resource basically means vocabulary. To do well in this
area you need to have a wide ranging vocabulary and use that
vocabulary accurately.

4. What aspects are evaluated under 'Grammatical Range and

Accuracy'?
refers to your ability to avoid making grammar mistakes. You should
also have a wide enough range of grammar to be able to talk about a
range of things and use complex sentences.

5. What does 'Pronunciation' assessment focus on in the IELTS

Speaking test? how naturally you sound

6. What band score range is used for the IELTS Speaking test?

Each of these criteria receives a score from 0 to 9 points

7. What does a band score of 9 indicate in the IELTS Speaking test?

8. What are some common characteristics of a band 6 performance in
'Fluency and Coherence'?

9. How can a test taker improve their 'Lexical Resource' score?

 Follow the 100% rule. Only use words that you are 100% sure
about. You should know the meaning, the grammar,
collocations, synonyms and antonyms of this word, as well
as what context it should be used in. If you don’t know all of
these, don’t use it. It is better to use simpler vocabulary and
make no mistakes than use very high level vocabulary that is
wrong.
 Buy a notebook to write any new words you hear or read.
Record them with meanings, synonyms, antonyms, grammar,
pronunciation, pictures, example sentences etc. or whatever
you think will help you remember them. Make sure you
regularly review these words one week, two weeks and one
month after you first record them. Try to read and listen to as
much English as you can. When you hear a new word, record
it.
10. What are some key indicators of a band 7 in 'Grammatical Range
and Accuracy'?

Band 7 answers use a variety of complex structures and more than 50% of
sentences have no errors at all. There are still some grammar mistakes but
these tend to be minor.

11. What pronunciation features are examined for higher band scores?

12. How important is the use of idiomatic language for achieving a high
band score in 'Lexical Resource'?
To achieve a 7 or higher band score in IELTS speaking, you are expected to use
idiomatic vocabulary. An idiom is a phrase wherein you do not go by the literal
meaning of the words in it; it has a figurative meaning.

13. What are common issues that might result in a band 5 for 'Fluency
and Coherence'?
Students typically use ‘slow speech and repetition’ and often have
problems when asked to talk about more complex issues. What leads
to this ‘slow speech and repetition’ is often caused by students not
being able to think of the correct grammar or vocabulary to explain
themselves, so the better your general level of English the less likely
you are to have problems in this area
14. How does the complexity of sentence structures affect the
'Grammatical Range and Accuracy' score?
15. What role does intonation play in the 'Pronunciation' criterion?
16. using little or no intonation. This makes it sound like you have

no emotion and not interested in the topic.

Solution– try to sound like you are actually interested or passionate about
the topics. If you have positive feelings about what you are saying,
intonation will normally follow. I know that some of the topics are a little
boring, but try to pretend you are interested.

17. How can hesitation and self-correction impact the 'Fluency and
Coherence' score?

The main problem is students worrying too much about grammar and
vocabulary and this slowing and stopping their speech to an
unnatural pace. In your own language you do not have to think as
much as you do in English and this leads to a very smooth and
regular pattern of words. In English, especially in a test, you are
often searching for the perfect word or phrase and this causes
problems.
Solution– what works best for my students is to record themselves once
focusing on grammar and vocabulary and then again talking about the
same thing but not worrying about making mistakes. They often find that
they actually sounded clearer the second time around. You should do this
regularly when reviewing what you have studied that day. Practice talking
at a normal speed without thinking about making grammar mistakes and
your fluency will gradually improve.

18. What kind of vocabulary should be used to achieve a band 8 in

'Lexical Resource'?

Band 8 and 9 students have such a wide ranging vocabulary that they
can talk about any speaking topic because they have the required
vocabulary to talk about each of them.

19. Why is it important to have both accuracy and variety in grammar for
a high band score?

The other factor to consider in your grammar range is to have

complexity in your sentences. Avoid the trap of writing in short
sentences as a way of avoiding grammar mistakes. Remember
that even if your answer has no grammar errors at all, but you have
written everything in short sentences, you cannot receive a high
band score for Grammatical Range and Accuracy

20. How can a test taker demonstrate 'coherence' in their responses?

To increase score for FC:

 connect your sentences by linking words and signpoints

 extend your answers, add all the relevant details
 speak smoothly and continuously
 use pausing correctly

21. What are some strategies to improve pronunciation for the IELTS
Speaking test?
To increase score for P:

 pronounce words as clearly as possible

 record your speech and work on the words that you spell
incorrectly
 stress words and sentences correctly
 use correct intonations
 try to be easily understood by the examiner
