An effective team can solve problems that individuals alone cannot People who know the system can solve problems best People can be empowered to work together

Effective teams develop gradually and evolve How people view problems is as important as the action plan Team skills development is continuous

Team: a definition
A group of associates Shared goal, purposeful activity Each collaborates in doing the work All members subordinate personal prominence to the efficiency of the team

Characteristics of a WellFunctioning Team (1) Two perspectives:


Group - A Well-Functioning Team Individual - An Effective Team Member or Leader
Positive relationships among team members Shared goals and objectives Open and clear communication Low levels of healthy conflict Well defined processes and procedures

Lack of trust and collaboration across members Unstructured, unsystematic processes for making decisions Unsystematic approach to collecting and analyzing data or conducting an investigation

MS Focused Monitoring Teams


Include: Team Leader LEA Peers (from another district) Parent member MDE (OSE) rep

Role of the Team Leader


To: 1) participate in all training sessions 2) participate in a pre-visit meeting to develop focus for the visit; 3) conduct the team in a visit of 3-5 days (depending on the size of the district to which you are assigned); 4) lead in the development of a draft report;

Role of the Team Leader(2)


To: 5) gather all evidence (completed protocols) and facilitate the team findings; 6) submit draft report with evidence of findings to the MDE (OSE); and 7) collect critical information to refine the process.

Role of LEA Peer Members


to participate in: 1) All day training sessions; 2) A visit of 3-5 days (depending on the size of the district); 3) Complete protocols and make the commitment to the team process; and 4) Collect critical information to refine the process.

Role of Parent Members
to participate in: 1) All day training sessions; 2) A visit of 3 - 5 days (depending on the size of the district to which you are assigned); 3) Facilitate the evening parent meeting; 4) Complete protocols and make a commitment to the process; and 5) Collect critical information to refine the process.

Role of Selected District


Assist with data collection; Ensure the teams have the material and data requested; Provide technical assistance to team leaders in the conduct of the monitoring visit; Gain information leading to the refinement of the monitoring process.
