To explain/describe the functional requirements of the wall
The wall is the vertical element in a building which supports a roof and transmit the load from the roof to the foundation. The main function of the wall is to enclose and protect the inner part of the building. However, the following are the commonly accepted functional requirements of the wall. Strength and Stability The wall should be strong and stable enough such that the materials which are used in construction can resist the compression and tensile stress. The stability of wall can be affected by foundation movement, lateral movement (wind), eccentric loads and effects of temperature and moisture changes which leads to expansion and contraction of the wall. Resistance to weather and ground moisture Moisture include a water vapour and liquid water. The requirement of the wall is that, the movement or passage of the moisture from the ground to the internal part of the building should be resisted. Durability and freedom from maintenance The durability of the wall is very important as it provides out with no necessities regular maintenance. Thus, the wall built should offer or be durable for the whole anticipated life of the buildings and that require little if any or no regular maintenance and repair. Fire resistance In building fires start from a small source of ignition, “the outbreak of fire” which leads to the spread fire followed by steady state during which all combustible materials burn steadily up to the final decay stage. Fire safety regulations set out need to be practically considered to assure a reasonable standard of safety in case of fire. Resistance to the passage of heat It is also a functional requirement of the wall. To maintain a reasonable and economical conditions of thermal comfort in buildings, walls should provide adequate insulation against excessive loss or gain of heat, walls should have adequate thermal storage capacity and the internal face of wall should be at the reasonable temperature. Resistance to the passage Sound Sound is transmitted as airborne sound and impact sound. The vibrations on the air caused by the sound source will set up vibrations in enclosing walls which will cause Therefore, the wall built should ensure that the passage of sound is kept at low noisy level.
