The Indian subcont inent has a hist ory of eart hquakes. The reason for t he int ensit y and high
frequency of eart hquakes is t he Indian plat e driving int o Asia at a rat e of approximat ely
47 mm/year.[1] The following is a list of major earthquakes which have occurred in India,
including t hose wit h epicent res out side India t hat caused significant damage or casualt ies in t he
count ry.
