When you think about vertebrates, think about bones:
Vertebrate has to do with animals that have a lot of
bones, in the form of a skeleton.

It refers to animals with a backbone, which protects


their spinal cord. Vertebrates have many bones, inclu-
ding a skull which protects their brains, which tend to
be large. People, dogs, horses, lizards, dogs, cats, and
many other animals are in the vertebrate category.

Animals can be classified as either vertebrates


or invertebrates.

Types of vertebrates:
1. fish

2. amphibians

3. reptiles

4. birds

5. mammals

mal?

What do they eat?

Mammals that eat meat are called carnivores.

bear.

Mammals that eat only plants are called herbi-


vores. Some herbivores are cows, elephants,
and giraffes.

Mammals that eat both meat and plants are


called omnivores. Humans are omnivores.

Reptiles are animals that are cold-blooded.
