The document discusses the history and types of green roofs and their environmental, economic, and social benefits. Green roofs have existed for thousands of years and were originally used for agriculture, housing, and ceremonies. They provide benefits like reducing pollution, insulating buildings, managing stormwater, and creating outdoor spaces. The main types are intensive and extensive green roofs.

TO EACH HOUSEHOLD Presented by: Renalyn B. Cataluña A Brief History of the Green Roof
• Green roofs date back thousands of years. In ancient
times, green roof structures began as sod roofs above caves, with “rooftop” earth and plantlife used for agricultural, dwelling and ceremonial purposes. The downfall of these sod roofs was a lack of protection against burrowing animals and lack of waterproofing ability. • It originated and began thousands of years ago. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon include some of the most well-known examples of green roofs. Green roofs were originally intended to keep their homes cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Now, technology has evolved to have more advantages, and the list goes on. INTRODUCTION A green roof diminishes polluted air, provides heat isolation and cold insulation, also provides stormwater management, reduces ambient temperature, controls indoor temperature, saves electricity, and promotes biodiversity in the region. Aside from that, the owners are provided with an outdoor aesthetic atmosphere, which decreases ambient noise both inside and outside, and improves well-being. Green roof affects not just the architectural aspect of the house/building but as well as the physical, mental, and psychological state of the users and their surroundings. INTRODUCTION
Green roofs are installed in multiple layers on top
of a conventional or flat roof and are covered partially or fully with vegetation including soil. It has become a trend, unfortunately, houses in the Philippines have not widely adapted to it yet. The cost of green roof installation is known for its high cost. In the Philippines, the price ranges from P2900 to P3200 per square meter and varies from where it will be applied. A more complicated location of green roofs tends to be more costly, in general, green roofs are costly primarily due to the materials that are used in protecting and assembling the roof and the structure to support the weight TYPES OF GREEN ROOFS There are two types of green roofs: 1. Intensive green roofs have deep soil layers, widely varied plantlife and increased weight- bearing and stress load (therefore requiring higher maintenance).
2. Extensive green roofs have
thin soil depth and less layers, a simplicity that allows for easier maintenance and makes them the more accessible option. GREEN ROOF INSTALLATION
Assembling a green roof requires a multi-
layer of protection and support to maintain the vegetation and the roof deck in good condition. A usual roof component consists of the following: •Waterproofing of the roof deck •Root barrier •Drainage •Filter layer/geotextile filter •Green Roof Substrate/growing medium (soil) •Vegetation GREEN ROOFS IN THE PHILIPPINES

IMPORTANCE Benefits of Green roofs 1.Environmental 2.Economic 3.Social 1. ENVIRONMENTAL • Natural filtration: green roof works as natural air filtration to absorb dust and clean the air • Plants have photosynthesis that consumes CO2 emission and release oxygen; this makes the air fresh and reduces CO2 dioxide emission • The green roof could be trapped up to 4% of heavy metal city dust • Acoustics: The ability of green roof on controlling and reduce sound reflection. • Stormwater management: Green roof acts as porous surfaces and control storm waters. 2. ECONOMIC • Energy: green roof has a benefit to reduce energy consumption through shading and insulation • Due to the capability of horizontal plants to lessen temperature, they are an appropriate technique for dropping cooling energy request and improving the energy efficiency of buildings • A green roof is lessening contraction and growth of building material due to temperature. • Thermal comfort: Plants have severe effects of systems on reducing urban heat island which is a significant problem in cities and urban areas. • Green roof nominated as a tool to mitigate urban heat island • Green roof increases the life span of the building roof by protecting the roof from thermal heat. 3. Social • The green roof creates places for recreation and rest. • Green roof proved that contact with nature has a psychological impact and increases human health and wellbeing. • Plants reduced stress and lower obesity achieved by proximity to green areas. • Plants: Have a positive impact on the people working or living around them. • Plants in urban areas and compound by buildings attract people more than plants in gardens. • Roofs can offer very vital environments for expert rare or imperiled species • Greening the roof for improving life and social activities in cities are not merely a scientific vision of the 20th century. The concept of the implementation of dry or living plants and grass on building roof and walls appeared in different climates as a construction element, or as a mitigation technique to lower the high temperature in a hot climate or to insulate building envelopes from cold weather. • In some cultures, either the green roof showed the social status of dwelling owners, used for socializing or enjoying the outdoor terrace garden, even the concept in some culture could be forbidden to more impoverished people. Whatever the use of a green roof as to symbolize a social status it is still use to mitigate the climatic conditions. • The techniques provide a significant contribution to the field of sustainable architecture, also to improve understanding of the progressive developments of a green roof. • Despite other new designs of green system, this conventional and simple green roof has remained to contribute significantly to provide indoor thermal comfort.
