FARM VISIT
Laboratory Activity No. 1

I. Introduction

Livestock and poultry were the strongest sources of growth in Philippine


agriculture from 1986 to 2000. At the farm level, livestock raising is a major
activity in rural areas. For a large proportion of smallholder households
engaged in livestock raising, the activity is the primary source of income
(UPLB-IFPRI-ILRI livestock household survey, 2000).

II. Procedure

1. Find a farm in your area (Backyard or Commercial) will suffice.

2. Observe its issues and problems, management practices (Feeding and

Marketing Management) Diseases Prevention and Control, and Equipment

and facilities available.

3. Attach a photo-documentation after the activity.

III. Objectives

At the end of the activity, the students will be able to:


1. Identify different farm practices;
2. Identify equipment and facilities use in animal production;
3. Identify several problems and issues in animal production; and;

4. Recognize the importance of bio-security in the farm.

IV. Results and Observation

1. Animal Description:

a. Name of raiser: Mr. Leonil Lustre

b. Animal Breed: ISA White

c. Number of Heads: 173 chicken head

2. Site Selection and Housing Management:

a. Physical Management (temperature, humidity, air movement)

b. Source of water and electricity

Their source of water is from LGU but sometimes when there is no


water they just draw from the well. And for their electricity is from
MORESCO II.

c. Waste disposal

Their options when disposing used syringe and dead chicken, its
either bury it in the ground or by burning to avoid infections to
human and other animals.

3. Equipment and facilities

a. Housing Facilities

5. Feeding Management:

a. Types of feeds use

They used layer mash in feeding because it is developed to satisfy


the protein and energy intended for laying hens.

b. Schedule of feeding (time)

Schedule of feeding start from 5:30 a.m and 1:00 p.m

c. Daily Feeding Practices

They use the restricted feeding.

6. Diseases Prevention

a. Common Diseases

The common diseases they encounter in their farm is Coryza (sip-


on). It is an inflammation of the area below the eye and nasal
discharge.

b. Diseases Control

When a chicken gets sick they isolate it to avoid infecting others.

7. Marketing Management

a. Quantity of production

In a day, there are about 120 to 125 eggs they get out of 173 heads.

b. Target Market

Their target market is only within the school campus specifically in


the cafeteria or canteen or instructors.
8. Bio-security measures

The farm uses foot bath for disinfectant. A simple bio-security


measure that aids in preventing the potential spread of disease.

9. Issues and Problems experienced by the farm

The issues and problems that the farm experience are the delayed
delivery of feeds provided by the school and when the chickens get
sick.
