ENGLISH B1.

4 – FOR STUDENTS STUDENTS

ONLY

Hello Teacher and hello everyone. Trong is my name. This year, I’m 20 years
old and I’m a third years student at Ho Chi Minh City University of
Transport with a major Computer networking and Data Communications.
After completing this major, I can become an engineer designing network
systems for companies and businesses. My hometown is Quang Ngai and my
hometown has specialties /ˈspeʃəlti/ such as Tra River Goby Fish, in addition
there are tourist places such as Minh Duc Pagoda – the pagoda with the
tallest Buddha /ˈbuːdə/ statue in Southeast Asia, My Khe beach, …. The
people in here are very friendly, close and hospitable.

Situation 1: You will have a problem situation and three options. You will choose
the best option and explain the reason.
- Situation: You have decided to improve your English, and you are
considering which option would be the great one for your English
learning.
There are three options:
1. Registering for a short-term English course about 6-12 months in foreign
countries
2. Taking up English courses at prestigious English centers in the country
3. Purchasing courses from popular English learning websites or applications

About the three options above, I will choose option 3 because of some reasons:
Firstly, there is a diversity /daɪˈvɜːsəti/ of learning websites or applications at prices
that suit /suːt/ my budget/ˈbʌdʒɪt/. Because I’m a student and I don’t have much
money.
Secondly, It’s flexible /ˈfleksəbl/. I can easily /ˈiːzəli/ learn English anywhere,
anytime with my phone and laptop.
I don’t prefer the option 1 (of registering for a short-term English course for about 6-
12 months in foreign countries) because the living standard is high so I don’t have the
financial /faɪˈnænʃl/ ability to pay.
And about the option 2 (taking up English courses at prestigious English centers in
the country) I don’t choose because there are lots of students in class. That’s difficult
for the teacher to focus on me.
For those reasons, I think that purchasing a course from a popular English learning

website is the most suitable way for me.

Situation 2: You will have a problem situation and three options. You will choose
the best option and explain the reason.
- Situation: You have applied for several job positions and received some offers
from employers. You are consindering which option would be the great job offer.
There are three options:
1. A stable job with upper income, but you must work for night shifts or holidays.
2. A favorite job with middle income, but you usually have business travels.
3. A desk job with lower income, but you only work for 4 days a week.

About the three options, I will choose option 2 because some reasons:

First, it would be great if I could do what I love. It makes me more motivate

/ˈməʊtɪveɪt/ and more productive.

Next, business travel is a good chance for me to travel around, it helps me

expand /ɪkˈspænd/ my knowledge about the world around us and learn many
interesting things.

I don’t choose option 1 because working for night shifts is very dangerous, it could
affect my health and cause some serious diseases such as cancer /ˈkænsər/,
cardiovascular /ˌkɑːrdiəʊˈvæskjələr/ disease.

And about option 3, I don’t choose because I make very little money with that job
so I don’t have enough money to pay for daily expenses.

In conclusion, a favourite job with middle income, but I usually have business
travels is my great job.

Situation 3: You will have a problem situation and three options. You will choose
the best option and explain the reason.
- Situation: You’ve just moved to a big city for further education. You are
considering which option would be the great one for a living place.
There are three options:
1. Living in a college dorm
2. Living in a room / house for rent
3. Living in a relative house

About the three options above, I will choose to live in a room for rent because of
some reasons:
First, living in a room for rent will have a lot of private /ˈpraɪvət/ space, making it
easier for me to focus on studying.
Second, the room for rent has no time limit so I can go home at any time and can do
everything I love.
About option 1, I don't choose because I like private space. In a dorm, I will have to
live with strangers, sometimes easily having conflicts /ˈkɒnflɪkt/ or differences in
lifestyle.
I don't choose to option 3 because it makes me feel uncomfortable, like having to ask
permission to go out, or having my hours controlled.
Inshort, I think living a room for rent is best for me.

Situation 4: You will have a problem situation and three options. You will
choose the best option and explain the reason.

- Situation: You are going on a holiday and stay for three nights in a
tourist destination. You are considering which option would be the
great place for staying. There are three options:
1. A spare room in a local person’s house
2. A privately rented apartment with full facilities
3. A hotel or motel room

About the 3 options, I will choose to live in a private rented apartment with full
facilities beacause of some reasons:
First, I think this option (a privately rented apartment with full facilities /fəˈsɪləti/) is
very convenient and flexible. I can do everything I want such as cooking or partying
with my friends and family.
Another reason, its price is more reasonable than hotels. Instead of having to rent 2
or 3 rooms for my family, I only need to rent an apartment with spacious space.
About the option 1, I’m not sure about the safety of staying with them and I feel like
I'm disturb /dɪˈstɜːb/ them.
I don’t choose option 3 because the cost is very expensive and narrow /ˈnærəʊ/
space.
In short, I think a privately rented apartment with full facilities is the best choice for
me.
Situation 5: You will have a problem situation and three options. You will choose

the best option and explain the reason.

- Situation: You are going to make a surprise for your mom and
that’s is her 60th birthday. You are looking for a nice gift for this
special occasion.
There are three options:
1. A ticket to a music live
show
2. A warm party at her favorite restaurant
3. A handmade birthday cake

About the three options, I will choose option 3 (to make a handmade birthday cake)
as a birthday gift for my mother because of some reason:
First reason, a handmade birthday cake will surprise /səˈpraɪz/ my mother and a
meaningful gift that brings memorable /ˈmemərəbl/ memories with my own hands.
Another reason is that it saves money. You can take advantage of ingredient /ɪn
ˈɡriːdiənt/ available at home to make it.
I don't choose option 1 because my mother usually doesn't like noisy places and the
ticket cost can be quite high.
And about option 2, I don't choose because my mother doesn't like to eat out at her
birthday party.
In short, I think a handmade birthday cake is the best choice for me.

Situation 6: You will have a problem situation and three options. You will
choose the best option and explain the reason.
- Situation: You just graduated from university and would like to do
something during a gap year before looking for a job. You are
considering which option would be the great opportunity for your gap
year.
There are three options:
1. Joining an international volunteering organization and doing some volunteer
work
2. Applying to work for international camp jobs or internships
3. Taking an adventure travel to somewhere in the world

About the three options, I will choose option 2: applying to work for international
camp jobs or internships because of some reason:

UTH - ILASS

First, doing an internship /ˈɪntɜːnʃɪp/ after graduation helps us develop /dɪˈveləp/

and refine our knowledge after studying. Working in a new environment outside of
school is an opportunity for us to learn more about ourselves, know our strengths
and weaknesses before going to work.
Second, we can learn new skills from our colleagues /ˈkɒliːɡ/ the company. We can
learn and improve language skills, communication skills, teamwork, and problem
solving. In addition, having work experience after an internship can prove your
abilities to employers.
About option 1, I don’t choose because doing some volunteer work may not provide
opportunities to develop skills and professional knowledge. I want to do something
that helps me find a good job.
I don't choose option 3 because I don't have much money. Traveling for a year will
cost a lot of money.
In conclusion, option 2 is the best choice for me.

Situation 7: You will have a problem situation and three options. You will choose
the best option and explain the reason.
- Situation: You plan to prepare a special dinner for your partner and you
are considering what to do
There are three options:
1. Going to a restaurant and enjoying authentic local foods
2. Buying some food in grocery stores and prepare a special meal
3. Strolling around street food stalls and savor some fast foods or snacks

About the three options, I will choose option 2 (to buy some food at the grocery store
and prepare a special meal) because of some reasons:
First, choosing the ingredients /ɪnˈɡriːdiənt/ myself helps me get fresh, quality
/ˈkwɑːləti/ ingredients, so I can cook a delicious, nutritious /nuˈtrɪʃəs/ and safe meal
from those ingredients.
Second, if I prepare and cook a special meal myself, it will show my partner my
sincerity /sɪnˈserəti/ and goodwill
I don't choose option 1 (to go to restaurants /ˈrestrɒnt/ and enjoy authentic local
foods) because I think inviting partners to luxury restaurants /ˈrestrɒnt/ is quite
normal /ˈnɔːml/ and common /ˈkɒmən/, I want a more special and meaningful meal
than that.
And about option 3. In my opinion, street food does not ensure /ɪnˈʃʊə(r)/ food hygiene
/ˈhaɪdʒiːn/ and safety.

In short, buying some groceries and preparing a special meal is my choice.

Situation 8: You will have a problem situation and three options. You will choose
the best option and explain the reason.
- Situation: You did your best and achieved very good results at the end
of the semester. Thus, you received a big sum of money from your
university scholarship. What would you do with it?
There are three options:
1. Purchasing something for your hobbies or your study
2. Travelling to another country
3. Opening a saving account for later use

About the three options, I will choose option 3 because of some reasons:
First, it helped me form the habit of saving at a young age. This helps me avoid
common money-wasting mistakes.
Howmore, having a savings account will help me have money in times of illness or
unforeseen events. In addition, building a long-term savings account helps us
complete bigger target /ˈtɑːɡɪt/ such as building a house or buying a car.
I don't choose option 1 because I do not have any special interests and I have enough
money to use for my studies.
And about the option 3, I think the scholarship amount is not enough to make this
trip because the costs of travel, living, and traveling abroad are quite expensive.
In short, opening a savings account is my choice.

Situation 9: You will have a problem situation and three options. You will choose
the best option and explain the reason.
- Situation: After your final exam is over, some of your friends are
going to make a plan for a memorable vacation. Which of these places
do you think is the best? There are three options:
1. Sandy beach for swimming and aquatic sports
2. Picturesque mountainous area for picnic
3. Amusement park

About the three options, I would choose option 2 because of some reasons:
First, mountainous areas are often quiet, with fresh air, providing relaxation /ˌriːlæk
ˈseɪʃn/ and peace /piːs/ after a stressful final exam.

UTH - ILASS

Second, a picnic in a beautiful mountainous area will promote /prəˈməʊt/ conversation

and bonding /ˈbɒndɪŋ/ between people. We can climb /klaɪm/ mountains, cook or play
interesting games together.
I don't choose option 1 because the beaches can be fun but they can also be crowded
and the days at the beach are very sunny.
And about option 3, I think the ticket price and service fee here are quite expensive and
there is no place to rest or sleep overnight.
In short, going to a mountain picnic area is my choice.

Situation 10: You will have a problem situation and three options. You will
choose the best option and explain the reason.
- Situation: Your University organizes a campaign with different
activities to raise students’ awareness of animal protection. You are
considering what you should do. There are three options:
1. Adopting a homeless dog or cat at pet caring centers
2. Selling handmade souvenirs or baked products to donate for animal conservation
areas
3. Participating in animal drawing or photographing contest

About the 3 options, I choose option 2 because of some reason:

First, selling souvenirs /ˌsuːvəˈnɪr/ or baked /beɪk/ products is an activity that can last
throughout /θruːˈaʊt/ the semester/sɪˈmestər/, providing a continuous/kənˈtɪnjuəs/
stream of income to donate /ˈdəʊneɪt/ to animal conservation areas.
Next, making souvenirs helps me express my creativity, practice skills and connect
with people. Furthermore, sales activities also help us share information about animal
protection with everyone.
I do not choose to adopt(ờ đóp) homeless dogs and cats because my living space is not
spacious and I have no experience in taking care of pets.
Participating in animal drawing and photography co is not suitable for me because this
job requires artistic(a tíc tịch) talent to attract people.
In short, selling handmade souvenirs or baked products to donate to conservation areas
is my choice.
