Electric Parking Brake System Description - Overview 1510 http://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/pubs/sm/1/2/Contents/enu/61TBAD/...

Electric Parking Brake System Description - Overview

The electric parking brake system replaces the traditional parking brake pedal or lever and linkage with an electrically controlled
parking brake mechanism in the rear calipers. This reduces driver effort and provides additional features such as:
Simple electric switch operation
Parking brake release upon acceleration
Automatic rollaway prevention

The system is controlled by the VSA modulator-control unit.

The electric parking brake consists of the following primary components:

VSA modulator-control unit
Electric parking brake actuators
Electric parking brake switch
System indicators

For locations of each component on vehicle, refer to Component Location Index, and for functions of indicators, refer to How to
Troubleshoot the Electric Parking Brake.

Electric Parking Brake System Description - Electric Parking Brake Actuator

The electric parking brake actuator has a built-in DC motor. When the motor operates, the motor's speed is reduced by the 2 step
worm gear reducer and a ball screw mechanism, increasing torque. The 2nd worm wheel gear turns the spindle and the nut inside the
caliper piston forcing it outward to generate brake pad clamping force. The electric parking brake actuators are automatically adjusted
to compensate for brake pad wear, so no parking brake adjustment is necessary.

When the electric parking brake system has a malfunction and the parking brake cannot be released, you can release the parking
brake by doing the forced cancellation procedure. Refer to the forced cancellation procedure.

Electric Parking Brake System Description - Clutch Pedal Stroke Sensor

Overview

The clutch pedal stroke sensor is located in the clutch pedal assembly. The clutch pedal stroke sensor detects the stroke of clutch
pedal, and outputs two kinds of voltage values depending on the given angle. The VSA modulator-control unit determines the clutch
engagement status from the clutch pedal stroke sensor.
In addition, the VSA modulator-control unit sends the clutch pedal stroke sensor value to the PCM via F-CAN.

cardiagn.com
Clutch pedal stroke sensor zero point learning:
The VSA modulator-control unit learns the clutch pedal stroke sensor position when the clutch pedal is fully released. This learning is
automatically performed when the ignition switch is turned on without pressing the clutch pedal after you do any of these actions:
Replacing the VSA modulator-control unit.
Replacing the clutch pedal stroke sensor.

Clutch engagement point learning

The clutch engagement point learning is necessary to release the parking brake in an appropriate timing when the drive away assist
function operates.
When starting the vehicle, the learning is automatically performed based on the clutch pedal position signal, the engine speed signal,
and the accelerator pedal position signal. The VSA modulator-control unit learns the clutch pedal position value by calculating the
value from the engine speed changing rate when the accelerator pedal signal is lower than the determined threshold. This learning is
performed several times whenever the ignition switch is turned on.

Electric Parking Brake System Description - Control

Manual Operating Function

The electric parking brake can be manually applied and released using the switch. Pulling up on the electric parking brake switch
applies the parking brake. Firmly applying the brake pedal and pushing down on the electric parking brake switch release it.

Drive Away Assist Function

- CVT
The electric parking brake is released automatically when the vehicle is driven away from a stop with the driver's seat belt buckled.
Problems in the electric parking brake switch circuits do not affect this function.
- M/T
The electric parking brake is released automatically when the vehicle is driven away from a stop with the engine running, the vehicle in
gear, the clutch engaged, and the driver's seat belt buckled. When the electric parking brake control unit confirms the appropriate
amount of engine torque to move the vehicle forward relative to the incline of the slope, the electric parking brake releases.
Problems in the electric parking brake switch circuits do not affect this function.

External Applying Function

During automatic brake hold or low speed follow control, the electric parking brake operates automatically depending on a request.

Automatic Adjusting Function

Because the parking brake is automatically adjusted whenever applying the parking brake, the parking brake does not require

cardiagn.com
adjustment. Additionally, if the vehicle is driven 1864 miles (3,000 km) without applying the parking brake, the parking brake is
automatically applied and released while the vehicle is in the OFF (LOCK) mode, and performs the automatic adjustment in order to
compensate for brake pad wear.

Emergency Brake Function

In an emergency situation, such as a failure of the conventional brake system, the electric parking brake system performs the
emergency brake function by activating the electric parking brake switch continuously. There are two controls depending on the state
of the VSA system.

In cases where the VSA system can perform the pressure adding control:
The electric parking brake system sends the brake control request to the VSA system which applies the emergency brake using the
pressure adding control.
In cases where the VSA system can not perform the pressure adding control:
The electric parking brake system controls the electric parking brake actuator so that the wheels do not lock, and applies the
emergency brake instead of the VSA system. However, if wheel speed signal is abnormal, the anti-lock control does not perform.

Prohibition of Manually Releasing the Parking Brake in Ignition OFF Mode

In the ignition OFF(LOCK) mode, the system does not allow manual releasing of the electric parking brake.

Ignition OFF Apply Function - Switch Failure (M/T)

If the electric parking brake switch has a fault, the system will automatically apply the parking brake when the vehicle is turned to the
OFF(LOCK) mode.

Maintenance Mode
The electric parking brake system has a maintenance mode functional test. This test fully releases the parking brake mechanism so
that brake service, such as rear pad replacement, can be done. Maintenance mode can be activated by the HDS.

How to Troubleshoot the Electric Parking Brake System 6986 http://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/pubs/sm/1/2/Contents/enu/61TBAD/...

How to Troubleshoot the Electric Parking Brake System

Control Unit
The vehicle is equipped with the electric parking brake and the system is controlled by the VSA
modulator-control unit.

NOTE: For DTCs of the electric parking brake system, please check from the ABS/TCS/VSA
menu in the HDS.
System Indicator

This system has two indicators on the gauge control module.

cardiagn.com
NOTE: For locations of each indicator, refer to gauge control module component location index.

When the system is OK, each indicator comes on for about 2 seconds after turning the vehicle to
the ON mode, then it goes off. If parking brake is applied, brake indicator (red) is still ON.
Brake System Indicator (Amber)
The brake system indicator (amber) comes on when the electric parking brake function is
lost.
The brake system indicator (amber) will also illuminate when the HDS maintenance mode is
enabled.
Brake System Indicator (Red)
The brake system indicator (red) comes on when the electric parking brake is applied.
The brake system indicator (red) blinks when the electric parking brake function is lost.
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)
The memory can hold all DTCs. However, when the same DTC is detected more than once,
the more recent DTC is written over the earlier one. Therefore, when the same problem is
detected repeatedly, it is memorized as a single DTC.
The DTCs are indicated in ascending order, not in the order they occurred.
The DTCs are memorized in an EEPROM in the VSA modulator-control unit. Therefore, the
memorized DTCs cannot be erased by disconnecting the 12 volt battery. Do the specified
procedures to clear the DTCs.
Self-Diagnosis
Self-diagnosis can be classified into two categories:
- Initial diagnosis: Done right after turning the vehicle to the ON mode and until the brake
system indicator (amber) goes off.
- Regular diagnosis: Done right after the initial diagnosis until turning the vehicle to the OFF
(LOCK) mode.

When the system detects a problem, the VSA modulator-control unit shifts to fail-safe mode.
Electric Parking Brake Actuator

1 of 4 12/20/2018 7:49 AM
How to Troubleshoot the Electric Parking Brake System 6986 http://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/pubs/sm/1/2/Contents/enu/61TBAD/...

The electric parking brake actuator operates when the parking brake applies or releases.
The parking brake motor can be heard at the rear wheels when the parking brake is applied
or released, this is normal.
Electric Parking Brake Forced Cancellation
When the electric parking brake system has malfunction and parking brake cannot be
released, you can release parking brake by doing forced cancellation procedure.
Before doing electric parking brake forced cancellation, check for electric parking brake
system DTCs with the HDS. If any DTCs are indicated, do the indicated DTC's
troubleshooting and repair the cause for DTC first.
If the electric parking brake switch fails, switch operation will be disabled and the manual
release is not possible. However, depending on the malfunction, you may be able to release
the parking brake by following procedures.
1. Buckle the driver's seat belt.
2. Start the engine.
3. Shift the transmission to D or R position/mode (CVT).
4. Shift the transmission to 1st/2nd or R (M/T).
5. Slowly press the accelerator pedal.
Brake Pad Maintenance Mode
When replacing the rear brake pads, it is necessary to enter the maintenance mode with the

cardiagn.com
HDS.
When the maintenance mode is not completed, the brake system indicator (amber) comes
on, and the VSA modulator-control unit sets code DTC C1100-53.
How to Troubleshoot DTCs
The troubleshooting procedures assume that the cause of the problem is still present and the
brake system indicator (amber) is still on. Following a troubleshooting procedure for a DTC that
has been cleared but does not reset can result in incorrect diagnosis.

1. Question the customer about the conditions when the problem occurred, and try to reproduce
the same conditions for troubleshooting. Find out when the brake system indicator (amber)
came on, such as during activation, after activation, when the vehicle was traveling at a
certain speed, etc. If necessary, have the customer demonstrate the concern.

2. When the brake system indicator (amber) does not come on during the test-drive, but
troubleshooting is done based on the DTC, check for loose connectors, poor contact of the
terminals, etc. in the circuit indicated by the DTC.

3. After troubleshooting or the repairs are done, clear the DTCs, and test-drive the vehicle under
the same conditions that originally set the DTCs. Make sure the brake system indicator
(amber) does not come on.
Intermittent Failures
The term ‘‘intermittent failure’’ means a system may have had a failure, but it checks OK now. If
you cannot reproduce the condition, check for loose connections and terminals. Also check
ground and power connections related to the circuit that you are troubleshooting.
How to Use the HDS (Honda Diagnostic System)
NOTE: Make sure the 12 volt battery is in good condition and fully charged.

1. If the system indicator(s) stay on, connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC).

2. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.

3. Make sure the HDS communicates with the vehicle. If it does not, go to the DLC circuit
troubleshooting.

first. Then refer to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting, and do the appropriate
troubleshooting procedure.
NOTE:
The HDS can read the DTC, the freeze data, the current data, and other system data.
For specific operations, refer to the Help menu that came with the HDS.
How to Retrieve DTCs
1. With the vehicle in the OFF (LOCK) mode, connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC).

2. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
