WELCOME TO CLASS! In honor of National Handwriting Day today, we will be using this class to explore what
makes the handwriting experience so enjoyable. We’ll consider the impact different writing tools have on
our experience and review several penmanship styles you may want to consider. Finally we’ll examine some
remedies to common frustrations. Handwriting is an invitation to slow down and enjoy the process of laying ink
on a page.

TOOLS FOR CLASS: This class is a great opportunity to grab a sampling of your favorite writing tools. I suggest
having 2-3 of your favorite writing instruments in different styles (ie. ballpoint, fountain pen, rollerball, gel, etc).
Any type of pen or pencil that you already love writing with is perfect.

PERSONAL OR PRESCRIPTIVE PENMANSHIP: With that in mind, I preface today‘s class by clarifying
One of the most beautiful elements of handwriting, in that our goal in this particular series is not to teach

WHY JAN 23RD FOR NATIONAL HANDWRITING DAY?

January 23rd, 1737 was the birthdate of a man whose name has
become synonymous with a signature - a man who signed his name on
a treasonous document with such conviction (and size) that he almost
forgot to leave room for the others signers. This man was John Hancock, a
founding Father of the United States and proud signer of the Declaration of
Independence.

SHAPE:
If neatness and legibility are priorities for your style, pay particular
attention to letter shape & watch out for unclosed o‘s g‘s, etc that can be
misread as other letters.

SIZE:
One of the quickest ways to improve the look of your writing is to have
a consistent body height to your letters. Letters like a, e,n,s,i etc should
all be the same height. Similarly, letters with ascenders and descenders
should be of similar height/length.

SLANT:
Keeping a consistent slant (regardless if it‘s a backslant, a perpendicular
slant, or steep forward slant) will polish the look of your writing and help
with legibility.

SPACING:
For non-cursive writing, try to keep letters within a word close but not
touching. Leave about the space of a letter „n“ between words.

STROKE SEQUENCE:
The order in which you make the strokes for individual letters can make
a difference. If you have one letter that constantly gives you trouble,
consider the order in which you make the strokes.

SPEED:
Your speed of writing should match your purpose. If you need to write
faster but desire to keep a nice form, consider forward slanting, cursive
scripts.
