Sequence is an ordered list of numbers, called terms, that may have repeated values. A sequence can be
generated from shapes, patterns, or rules. The number of dots generate the sequences of the figurate
numbers. The arrangement of this term is set by definite rule.
Patterns can be expressed through the different ways in finding terms of the sequence. Here are some of
the fundamental sequences that we can use in determining the pattern:
A. Arithmetic Sequence is only applicable if and only if the constant of each term is in addition or
subtraction. The formula in finding the 𝑛𝑡ℎ term of sequence is the following:

Example:
Find the next term of 4, 9, 14, 19, 24, _____.

+5 +5 +5 +5
Given: 𝒏 = 𝟔 (𝟔𝒕𝒉 𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒎) 𝒂𝒏 = 𝒂𝟔 𝒂𝟏 = 𝟒 𝒅=𝟓
Solution:
𝒂𝒏 = 𝒂𝟏 + (𝒏 − 𝟏)𝒅
𝒂𝟔 = 𝟒 + (𝟔 − 𝟏)𝟓 *Substitute the GIVEN values.
𝒂𝟔 = 𝟒 + (𝟓)𝟓 *Multiply (𝟓)𝟓.
𝒂𝟔 = 𝟒 + 𝟐𝟓 *Add 𝟒 + 𝟐𝟓.
𝒂𝟔 = 𝟐𝟗

B. Geometric Sequence is also called Geometric Progression in which each term after the first is obtained
by multiplying the preceding term by a constant nonzero real number, called common ratio.

Example:
Find the next term of 4, 20, 100, 500, _____.

x5 x5 x5
Given: 𝒏 = 𝟓 (𝟓𝒕𝒉 𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒎) 𝒂𝒏 = 𝒂𝟓 𝒂𝟏 = 𝟒 𝒓=𝟓
Solution:
𝒂𝒏 = 𝒂𝟏 𝒓𝒏−𝟏
𝒂𝟓 = 𝟒(𝟓𝟓−𝟏 ) *Substitute the GIVEN values.
𝒂𝟓 = 𝟒(𝟓𝟒 ) *𝟓𝟒 = 𝟓 ∙ 𝟓 ∙ 𝟓 ∙ 𝟓 = 𝟔𝟐𝟓
𝒂𝟓 = 𝟒(𝟔𝟐𝟓) *Multiply 𝟒(𝟔𝟐𝟓).
𝒂𝟓 = 𝟐, 𝟓𝟎𝟎

PROBLEM SOLVING
Example:
If a Function Hall has 15 rows of seats, determine the total number of seats considering that there
are 25 seats in the first row, 30 seats in the second row, 35 seats in the third row, and so on.

Solution:
Step 1: Determine the sequence. 25, 30, 35, …

+5 +5

Step 2: Find the 𝑛𝑡ℎ term. (Find the number of seats in the 15th row.)
Given: 𝒏 = 𝟏𝟓 (𝟏𝟓𝒕𝒉 𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒎) 𝒂𝒏 = 𝒂𝟏𝟓 𝒂𝟏 = 𝟐𝟓 𝒅=𝟓
𝒂𝒏 = 𝒂𝟏 + (𝒏 − 𝟏)𝒅
𝒂𝟏𝟓 = 𝟐𝟓 + (𝟏𝟓 − 𝟏)𝟓 *Substitute the GIVEN values.
𝒂𝟏𝟓 = 𝟐𝟓 + (𝟏𝟒)𝟓 *Multiply 𝟏𝟒(𝟓).
𝒂𝟏𝟓 = 𝟐𝟓 + 𝟕𝟎 *Add 𝟐𝟓 + 𝟕𝟎.
𝒂𝟏𝟓 = 𝟗𝟓

To determine the total number of seats in the Function Hall with 15 rows of seats, we will use the
Arithmetic Series Formula.

Given: 𝒏 = 𝟏𝟓 (𝟏𝟓𝒕𝒉 𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒎) 𝒂𝒏 = 𝒂𝟏𝟓 = 𝟗𝟓 𝒂𝟏 = 𝟐𝟓

𝒂𝟏 +𝒂𝒏
𝑺𝒏 = 𝒏 ( )
𝟐

𝟐𝟓+𝟗𝟓
𝑺𝒏 = 𝟏𝟓 ( ) *Substitute the GIVEN values. *Add 𝟐𝟓 + 𝟗𝟓.
𝟐
𝟏𝟐𝟎 𝟏𝟐𝟎
𝑺𝒏 = 𝟏𝟓 ( ) *Divide .
𝟐 𝟐

𝑺𝒏 = 𝟏𝟓(𝟔𝟎) *Multiply 𝟏𝟓(𝟔𝟎).

𝑺𝒏 = 𝟗𝟎𝟎

***The total number of seats in the Function Hall is 900.
