Subject: HEATWAVE ADVISORY FOR 21st – 27th MAY, 2024

I am directed to refer to the subject cited above.

2. According to the weather advisory from Pakistan Metrological Department,


heat wave is expected to hit all areas of Punjab from 21st - 27th May, 2024, especially in
southern districts of Punjab i.e., Bahawalpur, RY Khan, DG Khan, Multan. This is
expecting to cause serious impact on the daily routines and lives of the people across
Punjab.
3. I am directed that the following SOPs shall be implemented:

a) Health facilities
i. Establish heatwave counters at each Tertiary Care Hospital, DHQs and THQs
Hospital which readily provide information to all public about heatwave, its
preventive measures for healthy and disease state individuals.
ii. Hold coordination meeting with all stake holders and establish the
responsibility matrix of each department.
iii. Disseminate information to general public through multimedia screens / LEDs
on how to avoid the scoring heat impact, limited outdoor activities, proper
hydration and emergency situation handling. Use assistance of the local
media, as and when required.
iv. All water coolers, with plenty of clean water and air-conditioners shall be
functional across all health facilities, without fail.
v. All medicines i.e., infusions, ORS etc. shall be available across all health
facilities round the clock.
vi. Keep a close liaison with all district / tehsil administration, rescue 1122, district
disaster management authorities and respond to any emergency / untoward
situation, immediately.

b). Health Education Messages for Local community


i. Limit outdoor activities and use all protective measures in sunlight i.e., light
color clothing and head covering.
ii. Avoid laborious work in direct sunlight and areas with less ventilation.
iii. Drink plenty of clean drinking water, ORS to keep yourself hydrated and avoid
carbonated beverages. Use mist fans / air conditioners to keep surrounding
temperature in tolerable limit.
iv. Use reflective blinds / shades to block direct sunlight and to keep household
temperature at tolerable range.
v. Approach nearby healthcare facility for any emergency / untoward event.

3. I am further directed that the above mentioned SOPs must be implanted at all
health facilities, with immediate effect.
