ABSTRACT

In today’s world, young people are increasingly stepping away from political

conversations, often seeing the political scene as corrupt and untrustworthy. This

growing disengagement can lead to a lack of political awareness and participation,

which might result in ineffective governance, greater social inequalities, and a

disregard for the rule of law. This study seeks to explore and understand the level of

political awareness among Grade 12 senior high school students in the Humanities

and Social Science (HUMSS) strand. By using a mixed-methods design, we combined

qualitative insights with quantitative data to get a better understanding of students’

political knowledge, engagement, and participation. The qualitative part involved

deep, non-numerical data analysis, while the quantitative aspect looked at patterns and

relationships through numerical data. Our findings showed that students had a

moderate level of political awareness, with an average rating of 3.75 for their

involvement in community issues and decision-making processes, and 4.5 for their

motivation to engage in politics. The overall weighted mean for political participation

was 3.50, but political knowledge scored a perfect 5, highlighting that those students

recognized the importance of political understanding in voting and civic engagement.

This study emphasizes how crucial political awareness and knowledge are in fostering

active citizenship, making informed decisions, and upholding democratic values.

Keywords: political awareness, political participation, civic engagement, political

knowledge, Humanities and Social Science (HUMSS) students.

Political Awareness

It is anticipated that talented young people will contribute significantly to the

nation’s policymaking in the future and will use their intelligence and experience to

benefit the nation. Political Awareness: Rohoman (2023) defined political awareness

as having the basic knowledge of politics, studying the important issues of history,

and having the ability to analyze current events through an informed lens. According

to Putri et al. (2023), political awareness is an important element for the successful

implementation of democracy in a country. However, political awareness plays a

crucial role in shaping individuals’ political attitudes, behaviors, and civic

engagement. Political awareness is of great importance in society as it helps

individuals understand and navigate the power dynamics in organizations and the

broader political landscape. It plays a crucial role in shaping political attitudes and

behavior, as defined by Gortz (2021). Political awareness is highly relevant to

understanding and shaping political attitudes and behaviors. It provides insights into

the factors that influence public opinion and highlights the importance of considering

individuals’ levels of political awareness when studying political phenomena.

Political Awareness of Students

Political awareness is crucial for individuals, especially students who will

become future leaders of the country. As students reach the age of 21 and become

eligible to vote, it becomes even more important for them to understand the current

political system. Political awareness refers to the possession of political information

6
Division of Rizal
PILILLA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Pililla, Rizal
and knowledge, which can vary from person to person (Rahman and Razali, 2019).

By being politically aware, students can make informed decisions when participating

in the political process and exercising their right to vote. This understanding of the

political system is essential for students to actively engage in shaping the future of

their country. Political awareness is very important to be built from an early age in the

younger generation. It encourages them to participate and contribute to their nation.

The participation of youth in political processes is crucial for a representative political

system. Additionally, in the political awareness that students are not overtly

disengaged in politics but many of them wish for more opportunities and take the part

in political decisions. So, it means, it can encourage student to contribute to their

position in the society (Kirstensen, 2022).

Importance of Political Awareness

The importance of being politically aware as a student, as stated by Lindsay

(2020), is that politics can change our lives by helping shape our perspectives. By

keeping ourselves updated on world events, we can further establish individual

interpretations about issues in our society today. No matter what political standpoint,

it is crucial to formulate beliefs. When individuals are eligible to vote, they should

know the policies and views of the candidate they are voting for. Knowing our values

as a society can determine what we think is right and wrong. This research study,

conducted by Al-Khaza’leh and Lahiani (2021), revealed that there was a

considerably high level of political awareness among the university students. It

encourages them to participate and contribute to their nation. The participation of

youth in political processes is crucial for a representative political system.

Additionally, in terms of political awareness, students are not overtly disengaged in

7
Division of Rizal
PILILLA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Pililla, Rizal
politics, but many of them wish for more opportunities to take part in political

decisions.

Rationale of the Study

Nowadays, the youth are becoming politically unaware and distancing

themselves from political discourse due to the perception that the political landscape

is corrupt. With that, many youths lack awareness, which can lead to a lack of

political engagement in the political process. Which may result in ineffective

government, social inequalities (the condition of unequal access to the benefits and

rights of society), and a disregard for the rule of law.

In this modern generation, young people are often more focused on their

hobbies, such as online games and social media platforms. As a result, they may have

less time to engage in politics due to their strong interest in personal entertainment.

Political awareness, on the other hand, refers to an individual’s understanding

and consciousness of political issues, events, and processes within their society. It

involves being informed about current affairs, government policies, and the roles and

responsibilities of political institutions.

A politically aware person is knowledgeable about the political landscape,

including the ideologies of different political parties, the functioning of democratic

systems, and the impact of political decisions on society. They stay updated on local,

national and international news, and actively seek out information to form well-

informed opinions.

8
Division of Rizal
PILILLA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Pililla, Rizal
Political awareness goes beyond mere knowledge. It also encompasses an

individual’s ability to critically analyze political information and evaluate different

perspectives and engage in constructive discussions. Politically aware individuals

understand the importance of civic participation and may actively engage in activities

such as voting, joining advocacy groups, or participating in peaceful protests to

express their views and influence political change.

The purpose of the research is to assess and understand the level of political

awareness among Grade 12 senior high school students in the Humanities and Social

Science (HUMSS) strand.

The objective of this research is to measure the students’ knowledge,

understanding, and engagement with political concepts, processes, and issues. The

aim is to provide insights into their political awareness and potential areas for

improvement or interventions to enhance their political literacy and engagement.

Scope and Delimitation

This research was conducted at Pililla Senior High School during School Year

2023-2024. There were 4 participants included in this study. For the quantitative and

qualitative parts of the study, 1 participant was selected from each of the four Grade

12 sections of the Humanities and Social Sciences strand; they will answer interview

questions and the questionnaire prepared by the researchers.

This study was conducted to determine the level of political awareness of G12

Humanities and Social Science Students.

9
Division of Rizal
PILILLA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Pililla, Rizal
Only the data gathered from the participants was used. Any data gathered

beyond the scope or timeframe were not considered.

Statement of the Problem

Specifically, it sought to answered following questions:

1. What is the level of awareness of the respondents with respect to their:

1.1 Political interest;

1.2 Political participation; and

1.3 Political knowledge?

2. How do you define Political Awareness?

3. What do you think is the importance of Political Awareness?

METHODS

Research Design

10
Division of Rizal
PILILLA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Pililla, Rizal
This research employed a mixed-methods design, incorporating both

qualitative and quantitative approaches. The qualitative aspect involved collecting and

analyzing non-numerical data, as highlighted by Aquino (2019), to gain in-depth

insights into the problem and generate novel research ideas. Quantitative research

involves collecting numerical data to analyze patterns and relationships. A well-

designed quantitative research study typically includes clearly defined variables, a

representative sample, and statistical methods for data analysis. A mixed-methods

design combines both qualitative and quantitative approaches to provide a more

comprehensive understanding of a research problem. This approach allows

researchers to capitalize on the strengths of each method, addressing the limitations of

using only one.

Locale of the Study

The setting of the study is at Pililla Senior High School (PSHS). It is in

Barangay Bagumbayan in the municipality Pililla, province of Rizal. PSHS is

currently offering programs under academic and technical-vocational strands. Under

academic program, STEM, ABM and HUMSS are offered. ICT, EIM and Cookery

are the courses under technical-vocational strand. The researcher selected this site

considering that it offers an appropriate setting that supports the purposes for their

research.

Sampling Technique

11
Division of Rizal
PILILLA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Pililla, Rizal
Purposive sampling was utilized in this study. The participants were selected

based on criteria. They were chosen because they possess certain characteristics or

experiences that fit in this study to provide in-depth and detailed information about

the phenomenon under investigation (de Leon, 2018).

Participants of the Study

There were 4 participants included in this study. For the quantitative and

qualitative parts of the study, 1 participant was selected from each of the four grade

12 sections of the Humanities and Social Sciences strand; they will answer interview

questions and the questionnaire prepared by the researchers.

Research Instrument

Structured interview was the main research instrument utilized in this study.

Aquino (2019) pointed out that interviews are particularly useful for uncovering the

story behind a participant’s experiences and pursuing in-depth information around a

topic.

The study will also gather data from respondents using a questionnaire-

checklist, which is the primary instrument for data collection. The study will focus on

determining the level of political awareness of senior high school students.

Data Gathering Procedures

The researcher sought a letter of permission to conduct the study from the

concerned authorities, namely Marlon B. Braza, the School Assistant Principal II of

Pililla National High School, and Dr. Rommel Z. de Leon, the Research Adviser, the

request was granted.

For the quantitative part of the study, the researchers distributed the

questionnaire to the respondents. On the other hand, for the qualitative part of the

study, the researcher digitally administered the interview through messenger to the

participants. Rapport was established as the researcher explained the purpose of the

study and the instructions before the actual interview.

With the assistance of the research adviser, the gathered data was computed,

encoded, analyzed, and interpreted. Based on the results, a summary of findings,

conclusions, and recommendations was formulated.

Statistical Treatment and Data Analysis

The data gathered in this study was analyzed using the weighted mean. It is

used to determine the level of awareness of the respondents with respect to their

political interest, political participation, and political knowledge.

Since this research is qualitative in nature, no statistical tool was used. Instead,

coding process was utilized. Coding is a qualitative data analysis strategy in which

some aspect of the data is assigned a descriptive label that allows the researchers to

identify related content across the data (Aquino, 2019).

section. The participants were asked to rate their agreement with the statement “I

involved myself in different community issues and decision-making processes.” The

average rating received was 3.75, which was verbally interpreted as “often.”

Furthermore, the participants were asked to rate their motivation to effectively engage

in the political process and remain educated in political awareness. The average rating

for this statement was 4.5, which was verbally interpreted as “often.”

In simple terms, the participants’ responses, which are verbally interpreted as

Note. Table 1.2 presents the data and indicates the level of awareness of the

respondents with respect to their political participation. The table provides

information on two specific aspects of political participation: understanding and

participation in political processes, and active participation in community political

activities. The first statement, “I understand and participate in the political processes,”

received a weighted mean of 3.50. This indicates that, on average, the respondents

have a moderate level of understanding and participation in political processes. The

verbal interpretation for this weighted mean is “sometimes,” suggesting that the

respondents have some level of awareness and engagement in political matters, but it

may not be consistent or extensive.

16
Division of Rizal
PILILLA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

On the other hand, the second statement, “I actively participate in political

activities within our community,” also received a weighted mean of 3.50. This

suggests that, on average, the respondents sometimes engage in political activities

such as attending public meetings, joining advocacy groups, or volunteering for local

political campaigns. The verbal interpretation for this weighted mean is also

“sometimes,” indicating that the respondents’ active participation in community

political activities is not frequent or consistent.

Additionally, the general weighted mean (GWX) for the data in Table 1.2 is

also 3.50, with a verbal interpretation of “sometimes.” This represents the overall

level of political participation awareness among the respondents.

The table provides an overview of the respondents’ level of awareness and

participation in political processes, but it does not provide detailed information about

the factors influencing their awareness or the reasons behind their occasional

participation.

Note. Table 1.3 indicates from the data gathered that the respondents have a high level

of awareness with respect to their political knowledge. Both statements, “My political

understanding informs my voting and civic engagement decisions” and “I

comprehend that my political knowledge encourages my engagement in discussions,

activism, and voting, fostering an informed citizenry,” received a weighted mean of 5,

indicating that the respondents strongly agree with these statements and perceive their

political knowledge as consistently guiding their actions.

The verbal interpretation of "always" further emphasizes the respondents'

belief that their political understanding consistently influences their voting decisions,

civic engagement, discussions, activism, and overall contribution to an informed

citizenry. This suggests that the respondents have a strong understanding of the

importance of political knowledge in shaping their political behavior and the broader

impact it has on society.

The general weighted mean of 5 for the data indicates that the overall level of

awareness among the respondents regarding their political knowledge is consistently

high. This suggests that the respondents are actively engaged in understanding

political issues, making informed decisions, and participating in various political

activities.

The data aligns with the notion that a well-informed citizenry is crucial for a

functioning democracy. When individuals have a strong understanding of political

issues, they are more likely to actively participate in discussions, engage in activism,

and make informed voting decisions. This level of awareness contributes to a more

informed and engaged society, fostering democratic values and effective governance.

18
Division of Rizal
PILILLA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Pililla, Rizal
2. How do you define political awareness?

Based on the interview conducted by the researchers, they found out that

understanding politics is the foundation of people's active engagement in democracy,

productive voting, and is no longer the only element of democratic life. It helps one

spread awareness about social justice, the rights of humans, and environmental

sustainability and comprehend the changes it fosters in a society. Knowing political

matters is crucial if one wants to remain informed about policies that embrace one’s

own values and should try to understand international relations and global issues.

Staying politically informed means understanding and making decisions, which is a

fundamental part of democratization as a whole. The knowledge of individual liberty

is one of the things that makes people understand their responsibilities and rights,

thereby helping them to effectively participate in civic affairs and support democracy.

3. What do you think is the importance of political awareness?

Based on the interview conducted by the researchers, they found out that

political awareness is crucial for understanding government politics and current

issues, including knowledge of leaders and policies. It informs decisions, enables

advocacy for change, and aids in understanding global politics. Entering politics

without prior knowledge is challenging, and decisions have significant community

impacts, making political awareness essential for anyone involved in political

processes.

19
Division of Rizal
PILILLA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Pililla, Rizal

CONCLUSIONS

The study reveals that the participants have a consistently high level of

awareness and engagement in political matters. They actively understand political

issues, make informed decisions, and participate in various political activities. This

supports the notion that a well-informed citizenry is vital for a functioning

democracy. When individuals have a strong understanding of politics, they are more

likely to engage in discussions, activism, and make informed voting decisions.

Understanding politics serves as the foundation for active participation in democracy,

productive voting, and spreading awareness about social justice, human rights, and

environmental sustainability. Political knowledge enables individuals to stay informed

about policies aligned with their values, understand global issues, and contribute

effectively to civic affairs. Political awareness is crucial for understanding

government politics, current issues, and making informed decisions. Overall, the

study emphasizes the significance of political awareness and knowledge in fostering

active citizenship, informed decision-making, and democratic values.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Based on the findings of the study, the researchers have formulated the

following recommendation: In order to address the issue of students having

knowledge and interest in politics but lacking proper participation, it is suggested that

schools implement programs that encourage active engagement and meaningful

discussions on politics. These programs should aim to create a platform where

students can listen, learn, and enjoy participating in political discussions. By

incorporating such programs into the school curriculum, students can develop a

deeper understanding of politics and its relevance to our society. Additionally, these

programs can foster a sense of responsibility among students to share their knowledge

and insights about politics with their peers. By doing so, students can collectively

contribute to a more informed and politically engaged student body.
