2024-25 Audition Packet- Alto and Bari Sax

Welcome to the 2024-25 Frisco High School Band! We are so excited to begin a new year, and to welcome
you into our band family. We REALLY look forward to you being part of our team!

This packet contains audition material for the 2024-25 Frisco Band. The purpose of this audition is to place
students in the appropriate band classes. We strive to place each student in the class where we feel they can
learn and grow the most, based on their current ability level.

Auditions will take place via recording submission. We ask that you create audio only recordings of yourself
performing each of the parts of the audition (see below), and then upload them using this link:

bit.ly/fhsbandaud2024
Audition recordings must be submitted by Friday, May 3 rd

Please contact Mr. Simon with any technology issues, or any other questions- [email protected]

We have 3 bands at Frisco High School:

 Symphonic Band- Designed for the enhancement of music performance concepts and skills necessary for
advancement into the Wind Symphony and Wind Ensemble. The majority of freshmen place into this
ensemble, which is typically comprised of mostly freshmen and sophomores.

 Wind Ensemble- Includes students with an advanced level of skill and musicianship; performs
challenging literature geared towards students who practice regularly. Typically comprised of mostly
sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

 Wind Symphony- Includes students with the highest levels of skill and musicianship; performs the most
difficult literature at our school. Typically comprised of mostly juniors and seniors.

All students currently enrolled in band in the 8th grade, or in grade 9-11 at FHS, will be accepted into our
program. These auditions will help place you into one of our concert ensembles as described above. All
members of the FHS Bands are members of the Marching Band, and perform the same music at games and
contests!
Your audition will consist of:

1. Major Scales - This packet contains a scale sheet with 12 major scales and chromatic. We recommend
playing from this sheet, but you MAY choose to use another scale sheet from which you have been
practicing.

a) Play as many of the major scales as you are able to prepare (submit a minimum of two), and
the chromatic scale. You get more credit for playing all octaves on the included scale sheet, but
you may leave out extreme high or low octaves if necessary.
b) While you will earn more points for playing more scales and octaves accurately, you should only
play the ones you have prepared by the time of the auditions.
c) Choose one of the tempo options listed on the scale sheet- we urge you to play only as fast as you
are comfortable playing!
d) Scales must be performed with an audible metronome, set at your chosen tempo, same tempo for
all major scales.
e) Record the Major scales in ONE CONTINUOUS recording file (The chromatic in a separate file)
f) The major scales you choose to play should be played back-to-back, with 4-counts rest between
each scale, recorded onto one continuous recording (no splicing files together!).

2. Chromatic scale- This packet contains a scale sheet with 12 major scales and chromatic. We recommend
playing from this sheet, but you MAY choose to use another scale sheet from which you have been
practicing.

a) Choose one of the tempo options listed on the scale sheet for the chromatic scale (it can be
different than the one for major scales)- again, we urge you to play only as fast as you are
comfortable playing!
b) Record the chromatic scale with an audible metronome set at your chosen tempo.

3. Required Audition Etude: Also included in this packet is a required etude. TONE, accuracy, and
musicianship are the most important factors (more important than a fast tempo!).

a) All students will perform this etude, with an audible metronome, at one of the tempo options
listed- we urge you to play only as fast as you are comfortable playing. Accuracy is more
important than speed!

4. Supplemental Audition Etude: Only students who wish to be considered for Wind Symphony (top band)
need to perform this. TONE, accuracy, and musicianship are the most important factors (more
important than a fast tempo!)
a. There is no deduction for trying this etude- it can only help you! There must be an audible
metronome. Perform the 'Andante' section at the listed tempo, then without stopping your
recording, pause your performance to re-set the metronome to one of the tempo options listed
for the Allegretto, and continue playing.

Relax and do your best- All students will have the opportunity to re-audition in November, for placement into
band classes for the spring semester. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at
[email protected] or [email protected]. We look forward to your performance, and to having you join
the Frisco Band family!

Sincerely,

David Simon and Matthew Courtney, Directors

Audition Scales
The 12 major scales should be performed at a single chosen tempo- choices are 80, 120, or 160 bpm.
Major Scales should be performed continuously/back-to-back, with 4 counts rest between.
The chromatic scale has alternate tempo options. All scales will be performed with a metronome.
Note: The highest tempo should only be attempted by students wishing to be considered for Wind Symphony;
The top tempo is NOT, however, a requirement to be considered for placement into that ensemble.
Correct notes, tone quality, and even rhythm should be priorities. Scales do NOT have to be performed by memory.
Students MAY elect to play from a different scale sheet, but should still follow tempo guidelines as described above.
Perform as many of the major scales as you can prepare (minimum of 2) and the chromtaic scale.
