VII/. Read the following passage and Choose the best answer

____Although speech is the most advanced form of

communication, there are many ways of communicating
without using speech. Signals, signs, symbols, and gestures may
be found in every known culture. The basic function of a signal
is to impinge upon the environment in such a way that it
attracts attention, as, for example, the dots and dashes of a
telegraph circuit. Coded to refer to speech, the potential for
communication is very great. Less adaptable to the confiscation
of words, signs also contain meaning in and of themselves. A
stop sign on a barber pole conveys meaning quickly and
conveniently. Symbols are more difficult to describe than either
signals or signs because of their intricate relationship with the
receiver’s cultural perceptions . In some cultures, applauding in
a theater provides performers with an auditory symbol of
approval. Gestures such as waving and handshaking also
communicate certain cultural messages.

____Although signals, signs, symbols and gestures are very

useful, they do have a major disadvantage. They usually do not
allow ideas to be shared without the sender being directly
adjacent to the receiver. As a result, means of communication
intended to be used for long distances and extended periods
are based upon speech. Radio, television and the telephone are
only a few.

VIII/ Read the following passage and Choose the best answer

_____Today’s cars are smaller, safer, cleaner, and more

economical than their predecessors, but the car of the future
will be far more pollution-free than those on the road today.
Several new types of automobile engines have already been
developed than run on alternative sources of power, such as
electricity, compressed natural gas, methanol, steam,
hydrogen, and propane. Electricity, however, is the only zero-
emission option presently available.

_____Although electric vehicles will not be truly practical until

a powerful, compact battery or other dependable source of
current is available, transport experts foresee a new
assortment of electric vehicles entering everyday life: shorter-
range commuter electric cars, three-wheeled neighborhood
cars, electric delivery vans, bikes and trolleys.

_____As automakers work to develop practical electrical

vehicles, urban planners and utility engineers are focusing on
infrastructure systems to support and make the best use of the
new cars. Public charging facilities will need to be as common
as today’s gas stations. Public parking spots on the street or in
commercial lots will need to be equipped with devices that
allow drivers to charge their batteries while they stop, dine, or
attend a concert. To encourage the use of electric vehicles, the
most convenient parking in transportation centers might be
reserved for electric cars.

_____Planners foresee electric shuttle buses, trains, buses and

neighborhood vehicles all meeting at transit centers that would
have facilities for charging and renting. Commuters will be able
to rent a variety of electric cars to suit their needs: light trucks,
