Water Webquest – Middle School Activity

Instructions:

1. Type: USGS Water Science School into the search bar. Click on the website:
https://water.usgs.gov/edu/

2. The Water Science School site has LOTS of cool stuff to explore. Answer the questions and
check these tasks off your list as you complete them:

□ Click on ‘Water Cycle’ – kids (left side of the list). Observe the Water Cycle diagram
- take a moment to look around the main picture – READ the blue bars on both
sides of the diagram.

□ Above this picture is a link to an ‘Interactive Diagram’. Click on it.

□ Choose THREE vocabulary terms from the diagram, hover the cursor over them and
READ the information provided. Record one new thing you learned from each of the
three terms that you read about.

□ GO BACK to the 1st main page (should be 2 ‘back’ clicks). Click on the ‘Water
Q&A’ link (left side of the list)

□ Under ‘Water Use’, click on ‘Which states use the most water?’ READ the
paragraph at the top of the page and observe the map below.

□ Which states use about one-fourth of the total water in the United States?

□ What are the primary reasons for the water withdrawal in (your state)?
□ GO BACK to the 1st main page (should be 2 ‘back’ clicks). Click on the ‘Activity
Center’ link (left side of list).

□ Under ‘Challenge Questions’, click on ‘The water content of things’. Try the activity
by estimating the water amounts needed for various products. Submit your answers.

□ Scroll through the results and read them.


□ How did you do, in general? Give an example….
□ Did any of the results surprise you?

□ GO BACK to the ‘Activity Center’ page (should be 2 ‘back’ clicks).


□ Under “Questionnaires about your home water use’ Click on ‘How much water do
you use at home on a typical day?’ Try the activity by estimating your activities that
use water. Submit your answers.

□ What is your own per capita use? Does this number seem reasonable to you?

□ Read the rest of the info on the page: Does anything surprise you?

□ GO BACK to the ‘Activity Center’ page (should be 2 ‘back’ clicks).


□ Choose two opinion surveys. Submit your answers and choose (your state) to see
how your thoughts compare with other people in our state.
