SUMMARY OF THE STORY

The Life Changer, narrates the story of Ummi and her family. It tells of her experiences and challenges as she
studied in the university being a married woman. In The Life Changer, she shares with her children, especially Omar
who just gained admission to the university and regards a person's stay in the university as a LIFE CHANGER.

Ummi and her children are waiting for their father. As they wait, Bint tells others what had happened in their Social
Studies class when her teacher asked her to tell the class how to interpret 'Good morning" in French. She did and
the teacher said "that's very good". Bint then asked the teacher to interpret "that's good" in French. The teacher
could not. He left the class and returned with the French teacher who helped him out.

Ummi comments that her children call her mummy, instead of mama. Her name at home, 'Ummi' also means
mummy. Ummi praises Mallam Salihu for being humble enough to admit that he did not know what Binta had
asked him. Omar, Ummi's eldest child returns home and announces that he has been offered admission to study
law. Omar then demands that his sisters call him "My learned brother". The family are happy for him as Teemah
asks him to call himself Omar Esquire. Omar then plans to ask his father to get him an android phone instead of the
torchlight one he has been using. Ummi uses this period to explain that a person's stay in the university is regarded
as a life changer.
Ummi narrates that it was joy for the people of Lafayette to see her go to the university. Her father only allowed
her to go if she was married. She did and she proceeded for registration. There she met most students who almost
dressed naked. She says that in the university, nobody wore uniform, except in the Law Faculty. She also tells of
Salma who abused lecturers not knowing that the young man behind her, was the lecturer who was going to get
her registered. During her own registration, she noticed that Dr Samuel Johnson, the HOD, a very young person,
was getting too familiar with her. It was at home her husband told her that the doctor was his friend and that he
had in fact, helped her to secure the admission.

Omar asks his mother to narrate the story of the quiet one. Ummi then does so in order to teach her children not to
trust everybody they meet. In the story of the quiet one, Talle who called the quiet one after his mother's death at
his birth, was associated with kidnapping. This was an event that made the police to invade the town as if they had
arrived to attack it. Nobody knew that Talle could be involved in such a crime. People only observed that he had
been making more than the usual purchase in the local store and reported it to the Hakimi. It was when the Hakimi,
the local head, was interrogating him that the police stormed his residence. At Talle's place, a boy had been found
and reported to have been kidnapped.

Salma visited Dr Dabo, the HOD of her department. The senior lecturer was carried away with the girl's beauty that
he asked her out. Unfortunately, Salma embarrassed him. She was not in school to date her lecturers. In Salma's
hostel, she shared room with Tomiwa, Ngozi and Ada. At first, the girls did not agree on anything but later became
so close that they did things in common. One day, Salma was approached by two men in a black Mercedes Benz
car. They were Habib and Labaran. Salma gave Habib a wrong number, in fact Tomiwa, her roommate's number.
The next morning, Tomiwa's phone rang and she went out to meet Habib who took to her. On that day, Habib
showered money and provision on her and the other girls in the room. Tomiwa and Habib became lovers.

Ummi pauses to sip from her zobo drink. She narrates how Salma was expelled from the university. She was
involved in examination malpractice while writing her last paper. She later tried to bribe the chairman of the exam
malpractice panel only to end up being duped because the chairman had been impersonated by one Mohammed
Kabir. She had used from the money she collected from Habib to do it. The anger Salma felt having been duped
made her to implicate Kolawole Abdul, who had helped her in the course of her final paper. Later, Salma lost her
father and this changed her.

Ummi also narrates Salim's, Salma's fiancé's experience on chatting with strangers on the Internet. He met a lady
online - Natasha. She had sent him a friend request and he had visited her in the night at the back of the university.
As he waited for Natasha, he was accosted by some armed robbers who were working with Natasha. They ordered
him to drive to their office. However, he drove with so much recklessness that the robbers had to jump out of the
car. That saved his life.
Ummi concludes her story and Teemah mocks Omar who wants a smartphone. They are still waiting for their father
and Ummi for her husband when the story of The Life Changer ends.
