LESSON PLAN: AGRICULTURE AND NUTRITION

Strand: Conservation of resources

Sub Strand: Growing Trees

Specific Learning Outcomes:


By the end of the lesson the learner should be able to:
a) Identify types of trees planted within their environment.
b) Plant trees to conserve the environment.
c) Appreciate the importance of planting trees to conserve the environment.

Core competence: Communication and collaboration as learners work in group.

Values: unity as learners work in group.

Key Inquiry Questions: What are some of the trees within your community?

Learning Resources:

Realia, ICT tools (laptop, phone and internet), Printed pictures.

Organization of Learning: The lesson will be conducted outside the classroom and the learners will be organised in groups of five.

Introduction:

Learners are provided with pictures depicting different types of planting materials so as to discuss.

Lesson Development:

Step 1

Learners are put in groups and provided with different planting materials e.g. seeds, cuttings and seedlings. Learners observe and describe the differences among
planting materials provided.

Step 2

Learners in their respective groups plant the planting materials provided.


i)Seedlings ii) Cuttings iii) Seeds

The teacher moves around guiding learners in their groups as they plant groups.

Step 3

The teacher assesses the work of different groups.

Step 4

Learner’s work is used to summarise the importance of planting trees in the environment.

Conclusion:

The learners sing a song about planting materials.

Extended Activities:

Learners take photos of different types of trees within their locality (school or home) and bring them to school for sharing and filling in the portfolio.

Reflection on the lesson:

The learner was able to plant trees within the school compound.

Assessment

Three oral questions on importance of trees will be asked during the lesson.

The learner is asked to draw/ describe planting materials.
