Think Your Way to Good Health

1 ____
While it may be true that health problems are often caused by physical factors, doctors say that our brains
also have an influence on how healthy we are. You’ve probably heard the phrase ‘It’s all in the mind’, and
although ‘all’ is going too far, some of our health problems can definitely be solved by positive thinking. This
doesn’t mean that you can always think yourself to better health, especially if you are suffering from a serious
illness, or even if you have a cold. Exercises with the mind, however, can help to prevent some illnesses from
developing, in particular anything related to stress and anxiety, which are often the result of overworking.
2 ____
One good example of how to improve your health using your mind is yoga. Many people still think that
practising yoga simply involves some stretching and breathing exercises. In fact, relaxation and meditation
are an important part of the sessions, and a feeling of calm and self-control are experienced by many who
attend classes. This allows them to find the right balance between work and their private lives, which means
lower levels of stress and therefore fewer problems such as high blood pressure and heart disease.
3 ____
Such techniques can be practised by anyone, including school students. There are many worrying situations
connected with attending school and sitting exams, and the advance of technology has made these worse.
Added to this are the expectations of social media, with teenagers feeling under pressure to keep up to date
with what is happening online. Taking time to relax is key to being able to manage the complexities of the
modern world, and if it helps with exam preparation, all the better.
4 ____
Another way that the power of the mind has been used is to minimise pain. Amazingly, hypnosis experts have
shown that patients can experience less pain if they are prepared for it in advance. This had even been used
during operations for patients who, for medical reasons, cannot be put to sleep. It seems unbelievable, but the
brain is actually able to block or ignore pain signals sent from the nerves. A simple trick that demonstrates
this is when you hurt yourself. If you pinch your skin on another part of your body, the brain is distracted and
the first source of pain becomes weaker.
5 ____
Of course, there are examples where a positive attitude seems to have helped people actually recover from
illnesses, even long-term ones. Some cancer patients have actually been able to fully get over their illness,
saying that their positive attitude helped them to defeat their cancer. This may or may not be true, but if it
worked for them, why shouldn’t it work for others? So the message is, keep an optimistic outlook on life and
focus only on positive things.
1. . A. How to fool the brain.
2. . B. One drug for all.
3. . C. Take back control.
4. . D. Serious cases.
5. . E. Pupils under pressure.
F. What the professionals say.
