SUMMARISED FALL PROTECTION PLAN

The original FALL PROTECTION PLAN DOCUMENT is available in the Safety office
PURPOSE:
Create a safe working environment and eliminate the risk of employees falling from elevated positions.
FALL PREVENTION:
Approved equipment used to prevent a person from falling: Life line, anchorage, hard barricading
FALL ARREST:
Equipment used to arrest/stop the person who has fallen, from striking the ground: Safety harness, deceleration
devices.
ELEVATED POSITIONS:
Position in which work cannot be done safely above 2 meters from the ground.
1) Permanent Platforms – safe and have permanent completed fall prevention
2) Scaffolding – Non permanent structures, must be green tagged before accessing
3) Ladders – Inspected before use, secured, one person at a time use
4) Elevated Working Platforms – Approved permanent structure platforms as per design drawing
5) Mobile Elevated Working Platforms - elevated working platforms that are rigidly connected to a mobile self-propelled
unit.
6) Cradles suspended from lifting equipment - A platform enclosed on all sides but open at the top designed for the
purpose of lowering and raising persons by means of a lifting machine.

RISK ASSESSMENTS:
Supervisors must prepare Risks Assessments and DSTIs for all elevated work.

PROCEDURE FOR THE INSPECTIONS, TESTING AND MAINTENANCE OF FALL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT
1) Safety harnesses – User to inspect daily and record, certified
2) Life lines – Installed by a competent person, inspected before use, tagged and on register
3) Scaffolds – Erected, modified and inspected by a competent person, green tagged before use
4) Portable Ladders – Inspected before use by a competent person, record on register.
5) Hard Barricading – Inspected daily by Supervisor and all faults corrected.
6) Reacceleration devices – Inspected monthly by a competent person and before use, record on register.
7) MEWP -– Inspected before use by a competent person, record on register.
8) Cradles - Inspected before use by a competent person, record on register.

PROGRAMME FOR THE TRAINING OF PERSONS WORKING AT A FALL RISK POSITION


1) Induction – Before being allowed to enter the construction site
2) Working at height training – Performed by accredited organization to all persons working above 2 meters from the
ground
3) Risk Assessments – To be acknowledged by signing by workers before performing task
4) DSTI – Compiled by the Supervisor and the team and acknowledged by signing by workers before performing task.
5) Toolbox talks - When necessary specific topics under the Fall Protection Plan will be presented by Supervisors to
their team.
6) Working at height procedure – Presented to all persons working in a fall risk position and acknowledged by signing by
workers before performing task

MEDICAL SCREENING

SAFE GUARDING OF UNPROTECTED OPENINGS


1) Openings in floors – Covered or hard barricaded and signage displayed. Addressed in DSTI.
2) Unguarded edges – Hard barricaded, inspected before use by Supervisor. Addressed in DSTI.
3) Unprotected stairways and doorways - Hard barricaded, inspected before use by Supervisor. Addressed in DSTI.

RESPONSIBILITIES
1) Construction Supervisor – Provide a safe work area, supervise and train employees and eliminate all risks
2) Employee – Responsible for their own safety, ensure they are trained for the task, obey legal instructions and
cooperate with the Supervisor
