I like all kinds of holidays. Usually, I go on long beach holidays with my friends, and two years
ago we went on an adventure holiday. Another time we went on a sailing holiday. But last
year we had less time, so we decided to go on a short city break. It was more expensive than a
beach holiday, but we had a wonderful time.
We went to Paris. We couldn’t afford a hotel so we thought about staying with a host family, but
then we decided to stay in a small guesthouse. It was very comfortable, but it was a long way
from the city centre. We chose it because it was cheap. And the public transport in Paris is good,
so we moved around very easily.
On the first day we went to the centre and visited the Louvre museum. We waited for over an
hour to buy tickets and there were lots of people, but we really enjoyed looking at all the famous
paintings. We wanted to visit the Pompidou Centre too, but we didn’t have time because there’s
so much to see in the Louvre. In the evening, we thought about going to the Eifel Tower, but we
were too tired! So we went there – and to the Pompidou Centre – on the second day. And in the
evening we went to a typical restaurant as we wanted to try some traditional French food. It
wasn’t very expensive and I liked the food. It was delicious! And the service was very good too.
On the final day, we went on a day trip to visit the Palace of Versailles, near Paris. We thought
about hiring a car, but as it was too expensive, we went by train. It was quicker than the bus. The
palace is very famous and it’s quite beautiful. There are wonderful gardens where we walked and
relaxed in the sunshine and rode bicycles around the fountains.
Our holiday was a very short, city break so on the fourth day we travelled home. For me, this
was a very different holiday, but it was one of the best holidays I’ve had because I visited so
many famous places for the first time. Paris is an expensive city, and like most big cities it isn’t
very clean, but it is a great place for a city break.

Woman: Do you want to go out one evening this week?
Man: Sure. Are you free on Friday night?
Woman: Actually, no. My cousin is coming to visit me.
Man: How about Thursday then? I have to work late on Wednesday.
Woman: Okay. Where shall we go? Shall we go out to dinner?
Man: I don’t have a lot of money at the moment. We could just meet at a bar for a drink, or you
could come round to my place, and watch a DVD.
Woman: No, let’s go out. I know a great place called ‘The Orange Tree’. You can get two meals
for six pounds on week nights.
Man: Two meals for six pounds? That’s very cheap! Okay, let’s eat out there then. Where is it?
Woman: Do you know Church Road?
Man: Yes, I used to go to music lessons in Love Lane. It’s just around the corner from Church
Road.
Woman: Well, The Orange Tree is on Potter Street. You go up Church Road and turn left near
the bakery.
Man: Okay. I’m sure I can find it. What time shall we meet up? Seven o’clock?
Woman: Well, I’ll probably take the bus into town. The six-forty bus gets into town at ten past
seven. I can get to The Orange Tree by twenty past.
Man: That’s fine. Hey, can I bring a friend?
Woman: Sure. Anyone I know?
Man: My friend Charlie. He works at the sports centre.
Woman: Yes, I think I met him at Anna’s party a few months ago. He likes skiing, doesn’t he?
Man: That’s right.
Woman: Sure, well bring him along. It will be nice to see him again.
Man: And Charlie’s got a car, so he’ll be able to take you home at the end of the evening.
Woman: Oh that would be good. I don’t like taking the bus late at night, and taxis are very
expensive.
Man: Well, I’ll see you later this week then.
Woman: See you!

Accom Officer: Hello, can I help you?
Marcel: Yes, my friends told me they already have accommodation for next year. They said I
need to sort out my accommodation too.
Accom Officer: Yes, you do. In fact, you’ve left it a bit late. We tell students to arrange
accommodation in January.
Marcel: Really? That’s very early.
Accom Officer: Well, by March, there’s usually nothing left. So, it wasn’t a good idea to leave it
until the end of May. Well, let’s have a look. I can probably find something for you. What sort of
accommodation are you looking for?
Marcel: Well, I’d like to stay in the university halls again.
Accom Officer: What year are you in?
Marcel: What year am I in? Oh, I see, I’m a first year student.
Accom Officer: So in September you’ll be in your second year. I’m afraid we don’t reserve halls
accommodation for second year students. Rooms in halls go to first year students, and we give
any remaining places to final year students.
Marcel: Oh. So what can I do?
Accom Officer: Well, most students rent a room in a house. It’s often cheaper than halls
anyway.
Marcel: Okay…
Accom Officer: Do you have any friends you’d like to share a house with?
Marcel: I don’t know… not really. I think they already have plans.
Accom Officer: Well, I’ll look on the computer system. There may be free rooms in some
houses. I’ll print a list for you. .. (sound of computer keys)… hmm, there’s not very much left.
Marcel: What is there?
Accom Officer: There’s a room in a house on Old Road. It’s with 5 other students, two
bathrooms, one kitchen, living room. £85 a week.
Marcel: Old Road? Where’s that?
Accom Officer: It’s about 5 miles from the campus.
Marcel: Five miles? That’s quite far.
Accom Officer: You can take the bus.
Marcel: Isn’t there something closer?
Accom Officer: Er… let me see - there’s one on Edward Street: small room, with 6 other
students, one bathroom, kitchen diner - it doesn’t have a living room. This bedroom’s very small
- only 2 metres by 3. It’s cheap though - £65 a week, bills included.
Marcel: It doesn’t sound so good…
Accom Officer: There’s nothing else close to campus. You could look for a private room.
Marcel: How do I do that?
Accom Officer: Check the local papers, look online - The Newcastle Forum website often has
accommodation in it. Someone might want a lodger, or have a room to rent.
Marcel: Okay, I’ll try the forum. Thanks for your help.

The food in Turkey is very good, especially the fish and the mezze, and I like to try traditional
dishes when I’m on holiday. And there are lots of traditional dishes in the different parts of the
country.
I went to Morocco last year for the first time for three years. In the past, I went more often. It’s a
beautiful country, but the main reason was that my grandmother lives there.
When I was a child, we went to Italy quite often and stayed in a hotel by the sea. But two years
ago I went to study. I’m an art student and with so many famous painters, Italy’s a fantastic
country to study Art History.
The weather in Thailand is fantastic! At least on the islands and parts of the coast, and that’s
great for me, because my favourite type of holiday is just being on the beach, and swimming in
the sea.
The first time I went to Russia, I visited the famous art galleries in St Petersburg. But this year I
went to Moscow on a language exchange and stayed with a host family. My Russian is much
better now!
A lot of people don’t know that Spain has lots of mountains. It’s not just a place to go for a beach
holiday, or to eat traditional food or go to museums. It’s one of the best places in Europe for
mountain climbing. I went there about five years ago.
