BIRLA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE PILANI, HYDERABAD CAMPUS

Course: Energy Storage Systems (ECE/EEE/INSTR F428)

End-Semester Examination (Session: 2022-23)
Total Marks: 70 Time duration: 180 Minutes

1.
a. Explain the production of electricity from a Fuel cell through a neat process flow
diagram. Show clearly the process of energy source(s) to fuel conversion also. 5M

b. Draw the electrical characteristics (Voltage vs. Current density) of a Fuel cell and show
different regions of operation. (3+3) = 5M

c. A pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) system has following specifications;

Height of the water head from the lower reservoir = 70 m
Acceleration due to gravity = 9.81 m/s2
Density of water = 1000 kg/m3
Determine the volume of water (Litre) required in the upper reservoir to store potential
energy of 1.5 MWh, during off-peak period.
During peak period, the PHES supplies electrical energy to the utility grid through
generator having efficiency 88% and a step-up power transformer having efficiency of
91%. If the PHES turbine efficiency is 92%, and the Kinetic energy generated at
Turbine output is 1.3 MWh, then compute the efficiency of PHES in generating mode.
(2+3)= 6M
d. A Compressed Air Energy Storage system has the following specifications;
Turbine efficiency = 86%
Generator efficiency = 88%
Determine the energy output for the system considering;
Air mass flow rate = 50 g/sec
Total mechanical work done per unit mass generated = 1000Wh/kg
Time consumed to completely exhaust the reservoir at full output power = 3 hrs
4M
(5+5+6+4)= 20M

2.
a. Draw the Liquid-Immersion based cooling system for Li-ion battery pack with neat
levelling and describe the working principle. (4+2) = 6M

b. Explain the operation of a Parallel Aquas (water based) thermal energy storage system
with a neat diagram and levelling. Show the direction liquid flow. 4+2 = 6M
c. Describe the 6-stage charging of Li-ion battery with suitable charging profile and
sequence of operations in tabular form. 3+2=5M

d. With a neat diagram and levelling the Power Electronic interfacing zone, Battery
system zone and Ventilation zone of a Li-ion battery pack, describe its Thermal
management scheme. 5+3 =8M
(6+6+5+8) = 25M

3.
a. Draw the schematic block diagram for interfacing a battery-supercapacitor hybrid
storage with solar PV source, supplying an AC load in off-grid mode. Neatly distinguish
the power lines, control lines and communication lines in the diagram.
(5+3) = 8M
b. A supercapacitor having maximum per cell voltage of 3.5 Volts, Nominal cell voltage
of 3 Volts. The energy stored is used to drive a motor of “pick and place manipulator”
for lifting a container at a height of 0.5 meters, the container mass is 500 gm.
Determiner the capacitance (mF) of the supercapacitor storage. Assume ‘g’ = 9.81 m/s2

3M
c. From the above information and findings, obtain the usable energy stored in the
supercapacitor for the discharge factor of 0.3
2M
d. If the charge/discharge current is 10A, time required to complete one operation is 5
minutes, power dissipated is 50 Watt, then compute the ‘ESR’ in (Ω) and the charging
cycle efficiency of the said supercapacitor.
3+5 = 8M
e. Calculate the round-trip efficiency of the supercapacitor from the above information.
4M
(8+3+2+ 8+4) = 25M
