B/C3.2 Trig Identities

Success Criteria: I will be able to…

 Prove that one side of a trig identity is equivalent to the other side
 Prove a trig identity using proper notation and communication

In mathematics, an identity is an equation (statement) that is always true regardless of the value of
the variable.
 An identity contains an equal’s sign, but CANNOT be solved since the statement is always true.
 Identities can ONLY be proven, by applying other known identities.

Fundamental Trigonometric Identities (Grade 11)

Reminders/Strategies for Proving Trigonometric Identities

There are no official “steps to prove” a trigonometric identity – the more you practice them, the
easier they will become!
 Use the reciprocal and quotient identities to rewrite the expression in terms of sine and cosine
 Make a common denominator to combine expressions that involve fractions
 Factor and/or expand and simplify expressions
 Use the Pythagorean identity when there are square terms (you can isolate this identity)
 Separate the equation into two expressions, one for the left side, one for the right side
 You should be able to work with only one side to rove the identity, but you can work with both
if you need to
 DO NOT move things across the equals sign!
 The value of each side of the equation should never change

Example 1: Prove the following identities.

a) cos 𝜃 tan 𝜃 = sin 𝜃 b) csc 𝜃 − 1 = csc 𝜃 (1 − sin 𝜃)
