2.3.7 Check
This section summarizes the necessary checks before the VSD is powered on.
Steps Description
Check whether power supply of the VSD meets relevant requirements. Rated input voltage of the VSD shall
1 be the same as that of power grid. If on-site voltage is too high, the input line can be connected to the +5%
tap.
2 Maximum output voltage of the VSD shall match the rated voltage marked on the nameplate of the motor.
3 Control voltage (low voltage) must match the rated control voltage of the VSD.
4 The rated power on the nameplate of the motor must match the rated power of the VSD.
Check whether the cables between the transformer cabinet and power cell cabinet which are separated for
5
the convenience of transportation have been correctly and firmly reconnected.
All cabinets shall be reliably connected to the factory ground with grounding resistance less than 4 ohms.
6 The controller shall be equipped with a dedicated grounding electrode with grounding resistance less than 1
ohm, which shall be hung in the air on the site where it is impossible to bury the electrode.
Check the cables at separation points and/or gaps. Make sure there is no exposed conductor due to
7
scratches or improper transportation.
Check whether all terminal blocks, fixing elements, cells and other sub-components area marked or labeled.
8
Notify Leader & Harvest Electric if there is any discrepancy.
Make sure the control power and mains power are normal and correctly connected and conform to local
9
electrical regulations.
10 Check whether all wires are connected tightly and correctly.
Check whether the bolts for fixing the isolator and operating mechanism of the bypass cabinet (purchased
11 separately) are loose. Make sure the edges are not too loose or too tight and in good connection, and the
isolator is tight and closes in right position. Mechanical interlocking between switches works well.
Check whether high-voltage input and output cables are connected correctly. Pay more attention to multi-
12
loop system.
Check whether the bolts for electrical connection at input points, output points and neutralpoints of the
13
transformer are fastened firmly. Wiring must be correct.
14 Check whether temperature probe is at the right depth and take effective fixing measures.
Make sure the cooling fan on the top of the cabinet is connected correctly and tightly with the fan rotating
15
freely in the correct direction.
Check whether the bolts for fixing the output line of the transformer, the side wall of the power cell cabinet,
and the three-phase incoming line of the power cell are fastened firmly.
16
Note: to verify whether the wiring is correct, the upper end of the module fuse can be measured with the
resistance scale of multimeter. If RS, RT and ST are all 0, the wiring is correct.
Check whether the input and output optical fibers are connected correctly (the fiber head shall be inserted
into the fiber seat of the right color, and the cells shall be connected to the wire of the right number). The
17 optical fiber and fiber head shall be tightly connected by means of crimping, and the fiber head and fiber
seat shall be clean and firmly connected. The length of the optical fiber shall be just right without pulling and
dead bending.
All screws used for wiring and cable connections shall be fastened firmly. The printed boards shall be inserted
18
into the right place in the control box, and the screws for fixing the panel and control box shall be fastened.
Check whether the analog signal introducing the VSD on site is signal without power (4 - 20 mA) or (0- 10 V).
19 Signal with extra power is not allowed. Also check whether the analog signal of the VSD is only connected to
the weak circuit of the user.
Check whether the output nodes of the VSD and the nodes supplied for the VSD on site are passive. The
20
nodes shall be separated from strong current, and wired correctly and firmly.
Table 2-1 Checks on VSD before Energization
Note: if the results of the above checks are inconsistent or abnormal, debug the VSD and notify the
manufacturer.

1. Fault status word (Interface The fault indication is automatically
display: fault name) canceled after the fault disappears
●● Under-voltage
-- Explanation: the DC bus voltage of the power cells is lower than internal setting value.
-- Cause analysis: the grid-side voltage is too low or grid-side transient voltage fluctuates greatly
in negative direction; the high voltage switch trips; the under-voltage setting value of control
board of power cell drifts; the control board fails; rectifying circuit at input side of the power cells
fails; main control box or optical fiber board fails.
-- Negative fluctuation of input voltage of the VSD system (except for the circumstances agreed
with the user).
●● Phase loss
-- Explanation: the voltage at input side of the power cells is lower than phase loss setting value.
-- Cause analysis: the fuse at input side of the power cells fails; phase loss at grid side; the
connection bolts at secondary side of rectifier transformer are not properly fastened; the three-
phase incoming lines of the power cells are loose or not properly connected.
●● Drive fault
-- Explanation: “drive fault” refers to the increase in tube voltage drop (10 - 15 V) due to
increased current (more than 6 - 7 times), or the fault occurs when module power supply on
driver board is damaged with IGBT open.
-- Cause analysis: short-circuit discharge inside the power cells; IGBT in abnormal condition;
short-circuit at output side; output cable is damaged; output bolt is overheated or not properly
fastened and ignited; unit control board or driver board fails; detection circuit is disturbed.
●● Overheating

faults, it can be replaced with a spare one after the VSD system is out of service. Replace the faulty
power cell as follows:
Note: to send the faulty power cell back to the factory, please pack it with spare circulating box
provided by the manufacturer to avoid damage during transportation.
Generally, the medium-voltage VSD is crucial for on-site process. If the VSD fails, it will cause huge
losses. In this way, it is of vital importance to ensure the long-term stable operation of the VSD. Among
many factors affecting its operation, on-site maintenance and management are very important. We
recommend the user to maintain the VSD regularly as shown below:
●● Clean the dust filter on the cabinet regularly and keep cooling air path unobstructed.
●● On-duty personnel or maintenance personnel shall regularly inspect the transformer and record the
temperature of transformer windings.
●● After the transformer is put into operation, cleaning shall be done annually, and insulation
resistance measurement and withstand voltage test shall be conducted periodically.
●● Check and tighten all bolts for electrical connection every 6 months or so.
●● Clean resistance divider regularly to prevent moisture; otherwise, creepage distance may decrease.
●● If the VSD is equipped with arresters, preventive test shall be conducted once every year, including
insulation test and power frequency discharge test. 2500V megger shall be used for the insulation
test, and insulation resistance among the cells shall be no less than 2500MΩ. Refer to product
instructions for specific test methods or consult the supplier. Clean the dust on theprotector's
surface.
●● The recommended element maintenance and replacement intervals are determined based on the
normal operating conditions of the VSD. The VSD shall be checked by qualified personnel, and the
recommendations of the must be followed.

Notes:
1). The above temperature and humidity are indicators recommended for preventive maintenance.
2). For the user choosing air duct cooling system: there may be conductive dust around the VSD, especially in summer, when the
temperature and humidity are pretty high in most countries, which may have a greater influence on the VSD. To protect the VSD and
ensure smooth operation, we recommend the user to improve the environment in the VSD room by using air conditioner cooling
system and air water- cooling system.
