    What is an IT/ICT technology or computer science method you would definitely like to study if accepted

    to ISSE? What would this technology or method be used for? (600 words)

    If I got accepted to ISSE at Ritsumeikan university, I would like to learn more about Human Machine
    Interaction (HMI). Human Machine Interaction as the name suggest is the technology where a human
    interact with a machine to do something. Maybe at first it seems strange how does a human could
    interact with a machine. But actually, we find this a lot in our life. Using touch screen on smartphone is
    an example of HMI. Without human interaction, most of electronic device is useless.

    Right now, Virtual Reality (VR) is a hot topic in today’s technology. VR itself is an example of HMI product.
    It is a product of HMI because we could use it to interact with a computer. Although, the types of
    interaction with a traditional HMI device are different, it is still the product of HMI. VR offer more of
    immersive and interactive interaction than traditional HMI device. From my experience of using a VR, it
    felt so real, like you are in the real world. Although I am only using it for gaming purposes, it still
    represents how an immersive experience you could got when using a VR.

    The use of a VR right now mostly for entertainment purposes such as watching movie or playing game.
    But VR could be used for more than that. It also could be used for scientific research purposes. Let’s say
    you are a scientist,you are researching about a design for spaceship rocket. Rather than doing the
    simulation in a monitor you could do it in VR. It is more interactive than using a monitor because you
    could imagine like touching the real thing, so it much easier for you to design it.

    VR technology for right now still an expensive and complex technology to be applied in research
    industry. But I believe for years to come it will become more advanced than now, so it could be easily
    implemented in research technology.

    Not only in VR, we also could find HMI in Internet of Things Product (IoT). IoT is a technology where a
    product could intercommunicate with other product. Of course, in other to function as the name suggest
    IoT require an internet connection. Usually, IoT product is an evolution from a normal product. For
    example, your normal light switch. In the past, a light switch is just a light switch it only could be used to
    control light. But a smart switch could be used more than that. For example, you could control it from far
    away. In my home, I already used this type of light switch. For me it is so convenient because I could
    control my light from wherever I am right now.

    Because it is connected to the internet, usually there are so many ways to control IoT product. Such as
    voice recognition. Voice recognition are a product of HMI and IoT. Although we did not make direct
    contact with the device itself, we use our voice to interact with the device so it could be classified as HMI
    product. Voice recognition is used to make our life much easier. For example, from the example above, if
    a smart switch also has built in voice recognition it could make our life easier. Such as when our hand are
    dirty or wet. At this time surely, we could not use the switch, so voice recognition come in place.

    With this in mind, for me HMI technology will continue to develop over time, so I hope I could learn
    further more in ISSE program at Ritsumeikan University.
