depicted in the design architecture of each new generation.
The first generation (1G) cellular network was based on analogue and was able to cater for
mobile voice transmission but posed some challenges in terms of quality of service and
security of the network.
The second generation (2G) came with the introduction of digitally encrypted technology
and greater security for sender and receiver with services such as text messages and MMS.
The third generation (3G) was developed to offer high speed data and multimedia
connections to subscribers.
The Fourth generation evolved from 3G with higher data rate, lower latency, greater spectral
efficiency and simple protocol architecture with efficient multicast than its predecessors.
Fifth-generation (5G) networks are being deployed to meet growing demands for data from
consumer and industrial users and to enable the use of advanced technologies such as smart
city applications, autonomous vehicles and navigation.

Research Question
The research question addressed in my monograph focuses on the evolution of cellular
networks across different generations.

Background information and context

Cellular networks are communication networks where the service area is divided into small
geographical areas called cells. Each cell has its own base station or tower, which
communicates with the mobile devices within its range. This system allows for seamless
communication as a mobile device moves from one cell to another.
The most common cellular network technologies include:
2G (Second Generation): Introduced digital voice communication and enabled features like
SMS. It uses GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) technology.
3G (Third Generation): Provided faster data transfer speeds and introduced features like
video calling. Technologies include UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System)
and CDMA2000.
4G (Fourth Generation): Offers significantly faster data transfer speeds, enabling services
like video streaming and online gaming. LTE (Long-Term Evolution) is the most widely
deployed 4G technology.
5G (Fifth Generation): Promises even faster speeds, lower latency, and support for a massive
number of connected devices. It utilizes technologies like Mm Wave and sub-6 GHz
frequencies.
These networks rely on a combination of hardware infrastructure, such as towers and
antennas, and software protocols to manage connections and data transfer. They are essential
for providing mobile communication services to billions of users worldwide, supporting
applications ranging from voice calls and messaging to internet access and multimedia
