CHE112 – CALORIMETER LAB REPROT

CHECKLIST
The checklist is provided to help guide your team through the assignment and to remind you of
experiment information, equipment, and goals. Your team is required to complete and submit the
given checklist with Exp. #1.

PRE-LAB QUESTIONS
The below questions1,2 will help you to review the definitions of keywords related to this experiment
and practice calculating heat capacity value. To calculate C p of egg, you have to use the equation:

Q=mC p ∆ T (1)

1. Define all terms in the above equation.

a. Q
b. m
c. C p
d. ∆ T

2. What is the difference between C p and C v ? Given the system under investigation, does it
matter which you use in Equation 1?

3. What is the difference between Exothermic and Endothermic processes?

4. What is temperature is assumed of the egg when it is boiled in water?

5. A 73.25 g piece of metal that had been submerged in boiling water was quickly transferred
into 450.0 mL of water initially at 19.3 °C. The final temperature is 25.0 °C. Use these data to
determine the specific heat of the metal.

POST-LAB QUESTIONS

1. Using the tables below, summarize collected data.

Table 1: Mass and Initial Temperature of Egg and Water

Material Mass (g) Initial Temp (oC)
Egg
Water

Table 2: Recorded Data of Temperature and Time

Time (sec) Temp (oC)

2. Create a graph of Temperature vs Time. Determine the egg reached thermal equilibrium with
the calorimeter.

These questions are based on F. R. Foulkes, Physical Chemistry for Engineering and Applied Sciences. Boca
Raton, FL: Taylor and Francis, 2012.
2
These questions are based on section 2.8: Heat of a Reaction and Coffee Cup Calorimeter-Home of Chemistry
LibreTexts.
3. Determine the specific heat capacity of the egg.

4. The specific heat capacity of an egg is reported to be 3.32 kJ/kgoC. Comment on the level of
accuracy of your experiment.
