Tutorial 2: Understanding Case Studies

Task 1: Discussion point

Why: To prepare for reading by sharing ideas, activating prior knowledge and engaging with the text.

Discuss the following points with your group. Do not worry if you do not know the information – you
can guess or skip the question.

 What is your experience with cafes? Share your ideas about café culture and your favourite
beverage.
 What do you know about coffee? Compare and contrast coffee culture in your countries to
Australia.
 What do you know about Starbucks? Are there any similarities or differences in the
popularity of Starbucks in your country and Australia.

This question is about the setting, the situation or the circumstances surrounding the focus of the
case study. This may be a company, a person, or an event. This question requires you to simply
describe without the need for any analysis or opinion from the writer. It demonstrates your ability to
critically read, paraphrase and summarise ideas from the case study in your own words.

Task 1: Discussion point

Why: To prepare for reading by sharing ideas, activating prior knowledge and engaging with the text.

 What setting does this problem exist within, i.e. situation - where? stakeholders – who?

the specific causes and effects. Your opinion is not required – rather, it demonstrates your ability to
critically read, paraphrase and summarise ideas from the case study in your own words.

Case Study Question 3: Recommend

This question is associated with solutions, decisions, or a clear response or strategy to address the
main issue at the centre of the case study. You are required to suggest a course of action or propose
solutions to mitigate or alleviate the issue. In addition, you must then evaluate your response by
examining the benefits and limitations of the proposed course of action. Your evaluation must be
thorough enough to persuade the reader to accept your recommendations.

Though your opinion is required, you need to employ the passive voice and present a balanced
viewpoint. This paragraph demonstrates your ability to critically read, paraphrase and summarise
ideas from the case study in your own words, as well as demonstrating critical thinking through
evaluation.
