WHAT IS FASHION?

Fashion is a term used interchangeably to describe the

creation of clothing, footwear, accessories, cosmetics,
and jewellery of different cultural aesthetics and their mix
and match into outfits that depict distinctive ways of
dressing (styles and trends) as signifiers of social
status, self-expression, and group belonging. As a
multifaceted term, fashion describes an industry, styles,
aesthetics, and trends.
The term 'fashion' originates from the Latin word 'Facere,'
which means 'to make,' and describes the manufacturing,
mixing, and wearing of outfits adorned with specific
cultural aesthetics, patterns, motifs, shapes, and cuts,
allowing people to showcase their group belonging,
values, meanings, beliefs, and ways of life. Given the rise
in mass production of commodities and clothing at lower
prices and global reach, reducing fashion's environmental
impact and improving sustainability has become an urgent
issue among politicians, brands, and consumers.
HISTORY OF FASHION
The history of fashion is a fascinating journey through time,
reflecting cultural, social, and economic shifts. It spans
centuries, with each era leaving its mark on clothing styles,
fabrics, and trends. From ancient civilizations like Egypt and
Mesopotamia to the elaborate garments of the Renaissance
and the revolutionary designs of the 20th century, fashion
has evolved tremendously. Key moments include the rise of
haute couture in the 19th century, the flapper style of the
1920s, the iconic looks of the 1960s, and the diverse fashion
landscape of today, shaped by globalization and technology.
COMPERING
FASHION NOW AND THEN

Fashion trends have a cyclical nature, often repeating

every 20 to 30 years. This phenomenon is driven by a
combination of generational changes and the cyclical
nature of design inspiration. For instance, styles from
the 1990s and 2000s, such as halter tops, boot cut
jeans, and chunky highlights, are making a resurgence in
today's fashion scene.

Researchers attribute this recurrence to a variety of

factors, including the passing down of fashion ideas from one generation to the next and
designers drawing inspiration from the styles worn by their parents. As we look ahead to the
coming decade, it's likely that trends from the 1990s and 2000s will continue to gain
popularity.

However, despite the apparent similarity to past trends, there are notable differences in how
fashion is perceived and embraced today. In contrast to previous eras where conformity was
more prevalent, contemporary society places a greater emphasis on individuality and self-
expression. Students, in particular, are increasingly comfortable deviating from conventional
fashion norms and embracing unique styles that reflect their personalities and interests.

Moreover, the influence of pop culture and celebrities on fashion trends cannot be
understated. The introduction of a new style often occurs during fashion shows or through
celebrity endorsements, triggering a ripple effect as it gains popularity among the masses.

Despite the transient nature of trends, the message to students is clear: prioritize personal
comfort and happiness over conformity to fleeting fashion fads. Embracing one's
individuality not only fosters a sense of authenticity but also strengthens interpersonal
connections, as shared interests and expressions become a basis for forming meaningful
relationships.

Ultimately, the evolving landscape of fashion serves as a reminder that self-expression is

timeless. As one freshman aptly puts it, "Before, I felt like I had to look like everyone else to
fit in, but since I’ve stopped doing that and started doing what I want, I’ve been a lot
happier." This sentiment underscores the importance of embracing one's true self and
finding joy in expressing individuality through fashion choices.

TRENDS THAT
NEVER GO OUT OF
STYLE
Fashion trends come and go, and if you’re too busy to follow them all, it might be a bit confusing
once you decide to revamp your wardrobe or catch up. Besides, some people don’t have enough
energy or interest to keep track of every Instagram post or hashtag which, in today’s age of social
media, makes the following trends a bit tiring and sometimes difficult. Luckily, there are certain
fashion elements and trends that never go out of style, so if you’re looking to spruce up your clothes,
these are the safe choices that will make you look stylish in all circumstances:

Jeans, always jeans

Jeans are a staple clothing item that’s been part of our wardrobes for almost 70 years now. The
only thing that keeps changing is the types of jeans we wear, so nowadays we’re more into
wearing high-waist jeans that can be great when you
need to cover some extra tummy fat and accentuate
your waist and butt. This is actually great, especially
since it aligns well current body positivity trend, as not
all body types are equally capable of wearing low-rise
jeans and looking good while doing so. The easiest way
to keep yourself up to date is to simply pay attention to
what people around you wear since nowadays almost
everyone prefers to wear high and mid-waist rise jeans,
and in case you don’t have time to pay attention, simply
google the latest jeans trends so you’ll know what to
buy next time. Jeans are versatile piece of clothing,
therefore it makes sense why they never go out of style.

Converse Chuck Taylors

Back in the day, these were exclusively tailored towards alternative subcultures, but nowadays
they’re favored and worn by pretty much anyone. Their long-lasting popularity is mainly due to
the neutral design that allows you to wear them with jeans, tracksuits, skirts, dresses, and
shorts. Even though sneakers have become increasingly popular among fashion influencers,
Chuck Taylors have earned their top place thanks to
their unique design that makes them distinguishable
among different types of sports shoes.

Retro pieces, mostly glasses

One thing that certainly never goes out of style are retro pieces. We’re all a bit nostalgic by
nature, and fashion brands know that which is why they keep resurrecting trends of the past.
Ten years ago, classic Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses came back in all their glory, and they haven’t
left since. Retro pieces are a sure way to remind ourselves of the
fashion of the past, and of course, introduce younger generations to
things that used to be popular back when their parents were young.
Another reason why retro pieces, a lot of them being glasses, are
getting more and more well-known is, of course, their
sustainability and exceptional design. Additionally, vintage clothes
and accessories have become more and more prominent, so it’s not
uncommon to see low-end brands making their lookalike versions of
unique pieces that were iconic in the past.

Simple and elegant pieces

A simple white shirt and an elegant tweed jacket will definitely never go out of style as they’re
classic and can be worn on different occasions, which is why they’re so favorable among people
of different ages and occupations. Similarly, wearing a chic
patterned jumpsuit can be a great replacement for a dress,
especially if you need to attend a special event that requires a
more elegant attire. Years ago, jumpsuits were reserved for
androgynous music legends such as Freddie Mercury and David
Bowie, but nowadays they’re mostly worn by almost anyone
who loves fashionable pieces that can be worn as dresses but
are quite different at the same time.

A little black dress

Invented by one and only Coco Chanel, and popularized by lovely Audrey Hepburn in “Breakfast
at Tiffany’s” this gorgeous piece of clothing has earned its fame for a great reason. It’s elegant,
simple and so amazingly timeless. In addition, it can be worn in various occasions, from fancy
dinner parties to formal meetings. Since it’s so versatile, it can be matched with different clothes
and accessories, so for example, if you need to attend a formal event you match your LBD with a
tailored blazer, and if you’re going to dinner, then it’s best to add a statement necklace or a silk
scarf to achieve an ultimate classic and stylish look.
Teens love to keep up with the latest fashion trends. Staying on top of what’s current makes
them feel confident and stylish. Fashion has always been a part of teen culture. Teens
express their individuality through their clothing choices. With the rise of social media,
awareness of fashion trends is greater than ever.
The whole world is becoming more environmentally conscious and teens are no exception.
Sustainable fashion is becoming more popular among teens. There is a high demand for eco-
friendly shoes, clothing, and accessories. Brands that commit to reducing their carbon
footprint and promoting ethical practices receive support from sustainably-minded teens.

Chunky sneakers

Chunky sneakers are bigger and bolder than ever in 2023. They
can give any outfit an edge. Teenage girls tend to pair them
with cute denim skirts or shorts. Teenage boys wear them with
jeans or joggers for a stylish yet casual look. Walk the halls of
any academic institution and students will be wearing some
brand of sneakers whether it’s Adidas, Reebok, Vans, or
Nike. Teens who want to keep up with fashion trends may not
find time to write essays. They can use the online writing
service where to pay for research paper. Reaching out to a
writer to write a research paper for them will save them time.
They will also be assured of receiving a quality paper that’s original and plagiarism free.
The services are affordable and they only have to pay when they are fully satisfied with the
end result.

Oversized clothing
Oversized clothing has been popular for a while but there is no sign of this trend slowing
down. It is perfect for allowing teens to express their style without
sacrificing comfort. Comfort is always a key factor in teen
fashion. Brands like Vans and Champion have many versions of
oversized, baggy clothing. Slouchy, oversized blazers were all the
rage on the runways for summer. Many teens like to experiment
with layering. They will pair a baggy sweatshirt with a cropped tee
or tight-fitting tank top. It’s all about finding a balance between
style and comfort. Someone like Hailey Bieber is a style icon for
many teen girls. She often wears oversized clothing, crop tops, and sneakers in a mix of
streetwear and high fashion.
Biker shorts and graphic tees

Many influencers today wear biker shorts and Kim Kardashian is the
one who made them popular. They are great for pairing with loose
tops, sweatshirts, or hoodies. They are most popular in black and made
from stretch material. Graphic tees are always popular with teens.
They can be striking and very artistically done. High fashion brands
often use funny, surrealist, and subversive messages on their tees.
Teens will sport these tees with pride as an expression of their
individuality.

Low-slung waists

The low-slung waist is back in fashion. It was popular in

the early 2000s but it is receiving a contemporary twist
today. Everything from jeans, evening skirts to suits and
shorts are undergoing the low-rise treatment. Brands like
Urban Outfitters are already offering a wide range of
options for this trend, including low-slung jeans, shorts,
and skirts. Teens are pairing the look with crop tops to
show off bare midriffs.

Accessories
Accessories also play a significant role in teen fashion. Oversized sunglasses, quirky hats,
and statement earrings are just some pieces that are popular.
Small shoulder bags are another good choice. Brands like
Urban Outfitters and H&M offer a range of interesting
accessory options.
