Class 6

Topic: Introduction to Set Theory

1. If S = {1, 2, 3} are the elements of set S then; (1 mark)

A. 1 belongs to set S
B. 3 does not belong to set S
C. 2 does not belong to set S

Solution: A [1 belongs to set S]

1, 2 and 3 are the elements of set S and therefore A is the correct answer.

The statements in options B and C are false.

2. Mention the following sets as finite or infinite. (1 mark for each)

a) A = {natural numbers less than 25}
b) B = {positive even numbers}

Solution:

(a) Finite set

A finite set is the one that has elements, which can be counted. Set A has 24
elements and is therefore a finite set.

(b) Infinite set

An infinite set is the one that has elements, which cannot be counted. There are
infinite positive even numbers; therefore, Set B is an infinite set.
3. If S is the set of vowels in the word “ENGLISH”. List all elements of set S (2 marks)

Solution: E and I or S = {E, I} (Any of these answers gets full marks. If only one of the vowels
are listed, then the student gets 1 mark)

Set S is the set of vowels in the word ENGLISH. With E and I being vowels in the word
ENGLISH; the elements of set S are E and I

Topic: Area and Volume

1. The volume of this cuboid is: (1 mark)

A. 24 cm3
B. 60 cm
C. 20 cm3
D. 240 cm3

Solution: D [240 cm3]

Volume of cuboid = L x W x H = 10 x 6 x 4 = 240 cm3

2. The volume of a cube of length 4 cm is: (1 mark)

A. 8 cm3
B. 64 cm3
C. 36 cm3
D. 16 cm3

Solution: B [64 cm3]

Volume of cube = L x L x L = 4 x 4 x 4 = 64 cm3

3. Find the surface area of the given cuboid. (3 marks)

Solution: (2 marks for correct formula and entering values correctly. 1 mark for correct
answer)

Surface area of cuboid = 2(L x W) + 2(L x H) + 2(W x H) = 2(7 x 4) + 2(7 x 3) + 2(4 x 3) = 122
cm2

4. What is the perimeter of this figure? (1 mark)

A. 12 cm
B. 32 cm
C. 34 cm
D. 24 cm

Solution: A [12 cm]

Perimeter of a rectangle = 2(L + W) = 2(4 + 2) = 12 cm

5. Calculate the area and circumference of the circle: (6 marks)

(Take π = 3.142)

Solution: (2 marks for correct formula and entering values correctly. 1 mark for correct
answer - Area) (2 marks for correct formula and entering values correctly. 1 mark for correct
answer - Circumference)

Area of circle = πr2 = 3.142 x 52 = 78.55 cm2

Circumference of circle = 2πr = 2 x 3.142 x 5 = 31.42 cm

6. Find the area of the given triangle: (3 marks)

Solution: (2 marks for correct formula and entering values correctly. 1 mark for correct
answer)

Area of triangle = ½ x b x h = ½ x 6 x 3 = 9 m2
Topic: Probability

1. Write down the sample space when a dice is rolled (3 marks)

Solution: (1 mark for two correct numbers. For example, if a writes 2 and 3 only, he/she will
get 1 mark. If a student writes 3, 4 and 5, he/she will get 1.5 marks. If a student writes 1, 2,
3, 4, 5 and 6, he/she will get full marks)

Sample Space - A sample space is a collection or a set of ALL possible outcomes of an

experiment

Therefore, the sample space for the roll of a die is: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6

Topic: Measures of Central Tendency

1. What is the range of this data? (1 mark)

63, 71, 65, 66, 87, 53

A. 34
B. 33
C. 32
D. 35

Solution: A [34]

Range – Difference between the Highest and the lowest values in a data set

Range = 87 – 53 = 34
2. Calculate Mean, Median, Mode and Range for the given data: (8 marks)

2, 14, 8, 14, 12, 16, 4

Solution:

Mean – The mean of a set of observations is the arithmetic average of the values. For
calculating the mean of a data set, we calculate the sum of numbers and divide it by the
number of observations.

Mean = Sum of numbers ÷ Number of observations

Sum of numbers = 2 + 14 + 8 + 14 + 12 + 16 + 4 = 70 (1 mark)

Number of observations = 7 (1 mark)

Mean = 70 ÷ 7 = 10 (1 mark)

Median - The median is the middle number in a sorted (ascending or descending) list of
numbers

Sorted list (ascending order) = 2, 4, 8, 12, 14, 14, 16 (1 mark)

[Student gets 1 mark if he/she sorts the list in descending order as well]

Median = 12 (1 mark)

Mode - The mode is the value that appears most frequently in a data set

Mode = 14 (1 mark)

Range – Difference between the Highest and the lowest values in a data set

Range = 16 – 2 = 14 (1 mark)
