We have assembled a panel of experts who will shed light on this important period in
Philippine history. Let me introduce to you the member( Introducing the member)
Moderator:
Before proceeding, let me share to you the short background during American period.
It’s all began during the Spanish-American War, when the United States, seeking
strategic advantages in the Pacific, defeated Spain and gained control of the Philippines.
Charie: At first, actually it is not really their intention to colonize the Philippines that’s
according to Heneral Douie when they are talking in a flag ship with Heneral Aguinaldo.
Just that, American found the opportunity to help Filipinos to fight against the Spanish.
Dave reign: it's all started during the Philippine- spanish war. And later on, revealed that
what spanish has manifested are their strategy. as shown in Proklamation in treaty of
Paris/peace On Dec. 10,1898 it was revealed that Philippine are sold by Spanish in return
of freedom from spanish rule .And also the Benevolent Assimilation stated that
Philippines are controlled by america.
Moderator: Thankyou, So During those years. Since they are controlled by American. Are
there new or changes brought by American to the Philippines? Yess
Moderator: How about in terms of Education, What are the challenges faced by the
educational system during the American period?
Marvie: One significant challenge was the language barrier. While English was
introduced as the medium of instruction, many Filipinos were not proficient in the
language. This posed a challenge for both students and teachers. Additionally, the rapid
implementation of the new education system resulted in a shortage of qualified
teachers, especially in rural areas.
Moderator: Thankyou.
Moderator: Question 2: What were the goals of the American colonial government in
introducing these changes to the education system?
Apple: The American colonial government aimed to modernize and westernize the
Philippines through the education system. They believed that introducing English as the
medium of instruction would facilitate communication and promote English proficiency
among Filipinos. By emphasizing vocational and practical skills, they aimed to prepare
students for the workforce and contribute to the economic development of the country.
Moderator: Great, They aimed to modernized and westernise the Philippines through the
education system.
(Charie Mae): The Americans also sought to create a more educated Filipino population
that would be more receptive to American influence and governance. They believed that
education would help instill American values and ideals among Filipinos, leading to a
more stable and progressive society.
Alone: Another challenge was the lack of resources and infrastructure. Many schools
were poorly equipped, and there was a shortage of textbooks and teaching materials.
This hindered the quality of education and limited the opportunities available to
students, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds
(Drixlier): The American period laid the foundation for a more centralized and structured
education system that continues to this day. The emphasis on English as the medium of
instruction has had a lasting impact, as English remains an important language in
Philippine education and society. The introduction of universities and colleges also
paved the way for the development of higher education in the country.
(Oro): The American period also highlighted the importance of vocational education,
which continues to be an integral part of the education system. Vocational schools and
programs provide students with practical skills and prepare them for various trades and
industries.
Moderator:How did the American period influence the structure and content of
education in the Philippines?
(Marivic): Thank you, moderator. The American period had a profound impact on the
education system in the Philippines. The Americans introduced a more formal and
structured education system, which included elementary, secondary, and higher
education. They brought in English as the medium of instruction and emphasized
vocational education to provide practical skills to students. The curriculum also included
subjects like science, mathematics, and English, which reflected the American model.
(Algem): Additionally, the Americans established public schools throughout the country,
making education more accessible, especially in rural areas. They also established
universities and colleges, such as the University of the Philippines, to provide higher
education opportunities. The American period laid the foundation for a more centralized
education system and emphasized the importance of teacher education.
Apple: Filipinos writer went into all forms of literature. Like newspaper reporting, poetry,
stories, plays, essays and novel. Infact, some of the known poets during American
Period was Maximo Kalaw P . ( The case for the Filipino,Self government in the

Phil on May 19, 1898. Nabuhay ang gobyerno ng Pilipinas sa pamumuno ni aguinaldo.
Narrator-I see, so during those times, what is really happened between Filipino
and American, If its not the intention of American to colonize the Philipines then,
why did they came here? Is there a war happened?
Answer: It’s all because of the Philippine and spanish war, that’s why American
came here to reinforce many soldier to help Filipinoes. During those times,
filipinoes still believed that American is ‘’kakampi’’. Eventually, Several places,
Provinces of MAnila that are controlled by Filipinoes already, However, They are
wondering why many American reinforcement/soldier still came when ‘’halos na

what is the real intention of American?

American towards Spanish. But because, Heneral Doue, stopped all forms of
