Chapter I
INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

How important is Lemongrass, Peppermint and Orange peel as an alternative

repellent? Lemongrass is a tropical plant native to Southeast Asia and a common
ingredient in Thai cuisine . Now grown in Africa , Australia , and North and South
America , lemongrass is widely used as a natural remedy for digestive issues ,
neurological problems and high blood pressure . Lemongrass reportedly has
antibacterial and antifungal all properties . It has traditionally been used as a pain
reliver and fever reducer . Lemongrass contains citral , a natural plant compound with
anti-inflammatory effect.
The leaves and the oil are used to make medicine . Lemongrass is
used for treating digestive tract spams , stomachache, highblood pressure , convulsions
, pain , romiting , cough , achy joints , (rheumatism), fever , the common cold , and
exhaustion. You can also use it to kill germs and as a mild astringent . Some people
apply lemongrass and it’s essential oil directly to the skin for headache , abdominal
pain, stomachache, and muscle pain .
The peppermint essential oil is proved to be efficient larvicide and repellent against
dengue vector. Further studies are needed to identify the possible role of oil as adulticide,
oviposition deterrent and ovicidal agent. The isolation of active ingredient from the oil could
help in formulating strategies for mosquito control.
Data indicates that mosquito repellency of orange peel samples increases with
increasing time form 60 minutes to 120 minutes. Samples padded for 120 minutes with 60 per
cent extract concentration showed 80 per cent mosquito repellency, therefore this time was
selected for finishing of orange peel samples.

Chapter II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Plant-based repellents have been applied for generations in traditional practice as a

personal protection approach against different species of Anopheles. Knowledge of
traditional repellent plants is a significant resource for the development of new natural
products as an alternative to chemical repellents. Many studies have reported evidence
of repellant activities of plant extracts or essential oils against malaria vectors
worldwide. This systematic review aimed to assess the effectiveness of plant-based
repellents against Anopheles mosquitoes. All eligible studies on the repellency effects
of plants against Anopheles mosquitoes published up to July 2018 were
systematically searched through PubMed/Medline, Scopus and Google scholar
databases. Outcomes measures were percentage repellency and protection time. A
total of 62 trials met the inclusion criteria. The highest repellency effect was identified
from Ligusticum sinense extract, followed by citronella, pine, Dalbergia sissoo,
peppermint and Rhizophora mucronata oils with complete protection time ranging
from 9.1 to 11.5 h. Furthermore, essential oils from plants such as lavender, camphor,
catnip, geranium, jasmine, broad-leaved eucalyptus, lemongrass, lemon-scented
eucalyptus, amyris, narrow-leaved eucalyptus, carotin, cedarwood, chamomile,
cinnamon oil, juniper, cajeput, soya bean, rosemary, niaouli, olive, tagetes, violet,
sandalwood, litsea, galbanum, and Curcuma longa also showed good repellency with
8 h complete repellency against different species of Anopheles. Essential oils and
extracts of some plants could be formulated for the development of eco-friendly
repellents against Anopheles species. Plant oils may serve as suitable alternatives to
synthetic repellents in the future as they are relatively safe, inexpensive, and are
readily available in many parts of the world.
Present study aimed to investigate the efficiency of orange peel and neem leaf powder on
the treatment of dairy wastewater. Sample was collected from Attingal sub district and the
wastewater characterization was made with standard methodologies. Orange peel and neem
leaf powder were added in different doses (1g, 2g, 4g, 6g, 8g & 10g) as coagulants to assess
the effectiveness and dosing level. Previous results using various natural products as
coagulants showed measurable increase in the quality of wastewater with pilot and field
studies. Present study also aimed to get maximum efficiency out of the selected two natural
products and prove natural material have the potential of adsorption and removal of higher
concentration of chemical constituents from the dairy industrial wastewater.
Peppermint also showed significant reduction in the F1 progeny of the cowpea weevils but
with less effect on weevils than garlic and chilies. The results indicate that these plant
products have the potential to protect cowpea seeds from cowpea weevils’ damage compared
to when the seeds are left or stored unprotected. They should, therefore, be included in pest
management strategies for cowpea weevil in grains stored on-farm in rural tropical and
subtropical regions.

RESULT AND DISCUSSION

Findings

The Lemongrass can be an alternative mosquito repellant and the researcher found out that
the Lemongrass reportedly has antibacterial and antifungal aproperties. Researchers found
out that the outcome is good but it has an awful smell . The researchers also found out that
after boiling the lemongrass, it gives a stenchy and awful smell because of the garlic added on
the experiment. Nevertheless, the product was proven to kill mosquitos based on the finding
done by the researchers.

Analysis of Data

This study aims to make a natural and budget friendly mosquito repellent.

effective alternative against mosquitoes..

Chapter V
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the results of the study , discussion that is related to finding
gotten from the results of data, and the overall findings from the experiment described in the
previous chapter, It also includes the reference to the aim of the study, which was to
determine the effectiveness of Lemongrass as an alternative mosquito repellant.
Based on the outcome of the experiment, the researcher concluded that lemongrass oil can be
an alternative against mosquitos. Lemongrass can fight mosquitos by just spraying a bit of its
oil. The lemongrass is an effective mosquito repellent. It can make mosquito disappear. Aside
from being a mosquito repellent, lemongrass can also be used in cooking. In Filipino
household, it is used to remove the raw chicken's smell. The effectivity of lemongrass can last
at least 20-30 minutes depending on the amount of the oil you sprayed. We, Researchers
recommend to add lemon to make the product fragrant.
