New SYS and TERM Software (V.04)
Changes to be made
1) SYS program
(1) To improve the auto tracking function, the algorithm was changed. The auto
tracking function points the antenna to the direction wlhere the C/N is maximum.
With old software, the system may lose the satellite signal during tracking. The
new software has the range of auto tracking as shown below.
-~
L
SB
Note) With new SYS software, the antenna alignment must be made in the
accuracy within 2 degrees, otherwise the antenna does not point to the satellite
because of limitation of the auto tracking range. For example, if the heading error
is +5 degrees, auto tracking corrects the heading error 3 degrees and 2 degree
offset still remains. See page 3 How to confirm antenna alignment.
(2) With old software, TX is normal but "ALARM: TX-RF circuit abnormality, TX
power insufficient (0164)" appears. This problem is solved.
These settings are reset to factory defaults once the system is turned off.
2/3
2) TERM program
Problems removed are;
(1) No fax communication, and
(2) voice breaks and silence occurs in a telecommunication.

Bearing of satellite
Calculated bearing
B1 Offset B2
Fig.1
7. Add bearings obtained at step 7, B1 and B2 in Fig. 1, and divide by 2 to get a correct
bearing of the satellite position.
8. Compare AZ obtained at step 1 with the bearing obtained at step 7. If the difference is
5 degrees or more, realignment of the antenna is necessary.
The inner diameter of the disk which is used for heading alignment is 170 mm, so the
rotation of the disk 1.48 mm changes the antenna direction 1 degree.

Chapter 1. Circuit Description
1.1 General
Inmarsat-B Mobile Earth Station (MES) FELCOM 82 is designed based on the technology used in
the FELCOM 81. One compact communication unit allows us to use full Inmarsat B services:
telephone, fax, telex, 9.6k data (MSD), and HSD communications. The FELCOM 82 works from
AC power supply, 110 VAC or 220 VAC. There are two models of FELCOM 82: FELCOM 82A
(class 1) and FELCOM 82B (class 2). The FELCOM 82A consists of an antenna unit, a
communication unit, a handset, a junction box, a printer, a telex terminal unit, and distress alert
buttons. The FELCOM 82B does not have a telex terminal unit. The optional
multi-communication unit increases the number of telephone and/or facsimile machine that may
be connected from 3 sets to 10 sets. A telephone, a facsimile machine, a multi communication unit
(PBX), an incoming indicator, and a credit card call adapter are also supplied optionally. The
telephone distress alert button may be located at either the IB-362, or at the handset hanger, which
utilizes a built in distress alert button. Figure 1.1.1 shows the configuration of the system. The
system requires heading data from a gyrocompass and position/time data from a navaid.

1.2 Antenna Unit (Above Desk Equipment)
The stabilization of the antenna is achieved by the active 3-axis control to compensate ship
motions: yaw, pitch, and roll. The axes include AZ post (AZ axis), EL axis, and Cross-EL axis.
The AZ, EL, and Cross-EL axes are at right angles each other. The AZ post can rotate 360 degrees.

An angular rate sensor is mounted on each axis to detect ship motion. The sensor produces a
voltage proportional to the rate of rotation about the sensor’s input axis. For example, the EL
sensor detects pitching and outputs the voltage to the PCU to change the elevation angle. Thus, the
antenna points toward the satellite even when the ship pitches.
In addition, the pedestal has a level sensor board consisting of a photo-coupler and dual-axis
gravity-referenced inclinometer. The sensing element of the inclinometer is a glass vial half-filled
with a conductive liquid. When the sensor is level, fluid covers five internal electrodes to equal
depths. When the sensor tilts, the depth of fluid on each electrode changes alternating the electrical
resistance between matched pairs of electrodes.
The photo-coupler is used to reset the elevation angle to 0 degrees at every power-up.

2) HPA
The transmission signal from the communication unit is supplied to the HPA, which is a class AB
amplifier via the TX L-band filter. The input signal to the antenna unit is 0 dBm and the output
signal from the HPA is + 42.4 dBm at maximum power. The EIRP monitor in the HPA picks up the
output signal of the HPA and delivers it to the PCU.
Depending on the control signal from the communication unit, the output power of the HPA is
reduced in 4 dB steps.
Power control
When a call is established, the Ship Earth Station (SES) antenna elevation angle information is
transmitted from the SES to the CES (Coast Earth Station) or NCS (Network Coordination
Station) as a part of the SESRQ (SES Request) or SESRP (SES Response) signaling channel burst
respectively. The channel assignment message instructs the SES as to which nominal Effective
Isotropic Radiated Power (EIRP) value is used for a particular call: 33 dBW, 29 dBW, or 25 dBW.
1-7
1.2 Antenna Unit (Above Desk Equipment)
Figure 1.2.5 shows the simplified circuit diagram of the HPA. The attenuator placed at the early
stage of the HPA controls the output power. The attenuator is adjusted in two steps to avoid
overshooting of TX power. First, the Power Preset circuit attenuates the input signal so that the
output power is lower than the rating. Next, once the transmission starts, the HPA output signal
detector U3 turns on the analog switch U6 and Power Adj. circuit controls the attenuator for the
rated output power. The feedback signal from U3 is compared with the output of Power Adj.
circuit to make the output power consistent.

The diplexer between the antenna and the output/input of the transmitter/receiver ensures full
duplex operation with 75 dB or loss isolation between the transmitter and the receiver / receiver
and the transmitter.
The received signal is amplified by the LNA and sent to the communication unit through the RX
L-band filter in the HPA chassis. The gain of the LNA is about 45 dB. The Noise Figure including
the diplexer insertion loss is less than 1.3 dB.

*********
The satellite signal level at the earth’s surface is;
O-QPSK signal: -154 to 142 dBW/m2
BPSK signal: -151 to 134 dBW/m2
Step 1. Initialization
At every power-up, the antenna heading and horizontal data is preset. The antenna azimuth data is
detected with the limit switch, rotating the antenna cw. The horizontal position is detected with the
level sensor board. The level sensor board is moved by a motor to the CCW position and the photo
coupler is turned on.
If the initialization is not completed correctly, the antenna cannot acquire the satellite signal,
because the system sets the wrong antenna elevation angle.
During initialization, the antenna status displays “FAULT” in the status monitor.
In the area where two satellites are available, the system selects the one having higher elevation
angle first in “AUTO mode” on Satellite select setting.
1-10
1.2 Antenna Unit (Above Desk Equipment)
The step track mode does not work with an elevation angle of 85 degrees or more.
When the system cannot acquire the satellite signal within five minutes after power on;
1. The antenna rotates cw slowly to find the signal on the primary channel.
2. If the system cannot acquire the signal within one rotation, the antenna rotates cw again to
find the signal on the alternate channel.
3. The system selects the other satellite if available.
4. If the signal on the primary channel of another satellite is not received, the alternate channel
is selected.
5. Finally, the system disregards the ship’s position data and searches the satellite in all
directions in steps of 4 degrees, changing the elevation angle between 82 and 6 degrees in
steps of 4 degrees.
(In addition to Auto mode, the antenna can be pointed to the satellite by selecting an ocean region
manually in the Satellite menu. The system also provides the function which changes the bearing
and the elevation of the antenna with commands such as HDG, AZM, and ELV. Refer to Section
8.2 Commands for details.)

1) FSK MODEM
To communicate with the antenna unit, the serial interface circuit, consisting of a FSK Modulator
and a FSK Demodulator is provided on the RF CON board. It transmits control signals and
receives the data concerning to the antenna status and the output power. CR5 should be blink.
Actually, CR5 will look like it is lit due to the high baud rate. If CR5 is off, no control signal is
being sent from the communication unit to the antenna unit.
1-13
1.3 Communication Unit
2) Receiver circuit
The receiver circuit on the RF CON board consists of an L-band amplifier, mixer and IF AGC
amplifier. The signal from the antenna unit is filtered, amplified and frequency-converted to IF
signal of 10.7 MHz. The mixer consists of U4, U5, U10, U11, and T1. The IF signal is sent to
either HSD filter or non-HSD filter and amplified up to 2 Vpp. The difference between the HSD
and non-HSD filters is the bandwidth: 150 kHz for HSD and 25 kHz for non-HSD. The IF signal is
sent from the RF CON board to the demodulator on the CPU board.
The AGC circuit consisting of U17 and U21 adjusts the gain of the IF amplifier. If the RX IF AGC
LEVEL in the status monitor is 150 or more, the AGC circuit is normal.

The thermal-controlled crystal reference oscillator which oscillates at 21.12 MHz (+/-0.1 ppm) is
used in the TX/RX frequency synthesizers and as a clock on the CPU board. The stability is within
2x10-8/day and 1x10-7/year.
The RX synthesizer consisting of two PLLs: 815 MHz loop and 730 MHz loop. The VCO 1 and
VCO 2 in the loops oscillate in different steps. When the one oscillates in 320 kHz steps, the other
oscillates in 330 kHz steps, and vice versa. The output of the two loops are mixed to generate the
signal in frequency range between 1535.7 MHz and 1555.7 MHz according to the RX channel in
use; CH6000: 1525.0 MHz, CH10000: 1535.0 MHz, CH14000: 1545.0 MHz.
The LEDs, CR8 and CR9 will light when the loop unlocks.
3) Transmitter circuit
The transmitter circuit consists of a mixer, RF filters, and RF amplifiers. The O-QPSK- or
BPSK-modulated IF signal, 56 MHz (+/-120 kHz, in steps of 10 kHz) is fed from the modulator on
the CPU board. R3 on the SAW FIL board, 16P0195 adjusts the output level of the RF CON board
to +9 dBm. U41 turns on/off the transmitter circuit. During the transmission, CR6 lights.
The TX synthesizer generates the signal in frequency range from 1682.4 MHz to 1702.56 MHz in
240 kHz steps. This signal is mixed with the TX IF signal to generate L-band signal, 1626.5 MHz
to 1646.5 MHz depending on the TX channel in use; CH6000: 1626.5 MHz, CH10000: 1636.5
MHz, and CH14000: 1646.5 MHz. CR7 lights when the synthesizer unlocks.

2) Receiver
The 10.7 MHz RX IF signal is delivered from the RF CON board to the CPU board. For HSD
communication, the gain of the amplifier U51 is set to 1.5 times higher than that for other
communications in order to lower the error rate.
The output of U51 is supplied to the AD converter U49. The input level to the AD converter,
measured at TP54 is 2.0 V. The LED CR1 will come on when excessive data is input to the AD
converter. The output of U49 is sent to the demodulator U29 and the demodulator DSP U30 for
demodulation and bit synchronization. The signals reproduced by the demodulator are 6 kbps
BPSK (Telex, TDM), 24 kbps O-QPSK (Voice, 9.6k Data/Fax) and 132 kbps O-QPSK (HSD).
Frame synchronization is made by the synchronizer DSP U34 after bit synchronization. When
three consecutive frames are synchronized, the synchronization is completed.
The synchronized signal is sent to the DECODE DSP U39 for “viterbi” decoding (voice, fax, telex,
and 9,6k data) and “turbo” decoding (HSD).
Finally, SYS CPU U64 and Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) U55 descrambles decoded
signal to reproduce data in the frame such as communication data and signaling unit.
The CPU in the SYNC DSP U34 outputs the signal quality or Carrier per Noise (C/N) data, which
is used for C/N value in the status monitor and bar indication in the handset display.

The outputs of the demodulator, I/Q channels are measured at J26 with an oscilloscope that has
dual sweep mode capability. The Lissajous Figure differs depending on the signal quality.
When receiving BPSK signal (NCS CC signal), the Lissajous figure is 4.0V in level. If this level is
more than 5V, A/D con, U49 saturates. This results in increased demodulation error rates. R33
(AGC) on the RF CON board is adjusted so that BPSK Lissajous figure is 4.0V.

3) Transmitter
Data from each terminal unit such as telephone, fax, telex, 9.6k data, and HSD is sent to the CPU
U64 for frame structuring or adding unique word and framing bits. The voice/fax data is supplied
to U64 via VCODEC (Voice Coder and Decoder)/FIU circuit.
The Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) U55 processes the signal further: scrambling and
convolution encoding, and provides filtered I (Inphase) and Q (Quadrature) outputs at 24 kbit/s
modulation rate. The phase of the modulated signal transmitted over the satellite path is in
accordance with the following definition:
TX data from the FPGA is supplied to the O-QPSK modulator AD9856, U52 to produce a
O-QPSK IF signal. The frequency of the TX IF signal varies from 56 MHz – 120 kHz to 56 MHz
+ 120 kHz, inclusive, in steps of 10 kHz depending on the TX channel in use. The signal is mixed
with the local oscillator signal, in steps of 240 kHz on the RF CON board.

4) VOICE CODEC/FIU
Total three telephones and/or facsimile machines can be connected to the cross-point switch
through the Station Line Interface Circuit (SLIC) which controls the ringer, detects on- and
off-hook signals, and converts the line from 2-wires to 4-wires. The ringer in the SLIC outputs 45
to 55 Vrms, 14 to 16 Hz signal and is capable of driving two telephones specified by FURUNO.
The input level of the telephone line is 600 ohms/0 dBm and the output level is 600 ohms/-10 dBm.
Using the optional multi communication unit increases the number of the telephone that may be
connected from 3 sets to 10 sets.
The voice from the telephone is sent to the Pulse Code Modulator in the Voice CODEC
(Coder/Decoder) U17 through the cross-point switch. The modulator converts the analog signal
into digital, and modulates it at a rate of 64 kbit/s. The APC codec codes the 64 kbit/s data into 16
kbit/s data.
Fax communication: The fax signal is sent to the FIU (Fax Interface Unit) consisting of a
DSP and an associated fax modem chip.

Figure 1.3.15 shows the block diagram of the main-inverter. The input voltage to the main inverter
is monitored for low- and high voltages. With rated input voltage, K1 driver Q23 turns on the relay
K1. The rush current is charged on C5 and C6 through R1. The switching regulator control circuit
U31 activates with a delay and the main-inverter which has a slow start circuit starts oscillating.
The feedback signal from T1 turns on the triac Q1 and AC input current flows through Q1 instead
of R1.
With the jumper plug J2/P2 connected, the circuit is voltage doubler rectifier connection for 110
Vac power supply. For 220 Vac, remove the jumper plug.
The oscillation frequency of the main-inverter is set to 45 kHz by adjusting R43. The
main-inverter outputs +29.5 V and +24 V. +29.5 V is generated by using two rectifiers: 24 V and
5.5 V, and adjusted with R61.

L72, L73, and L74 are Saturable Reactors (SR) which serve as a magnetic amplifier. During “off”
period of Q72, a magnetic field that opposes the filed set up by the primary current in the SR. The
magnetic flux density in the SR changes from point b, to a via c. Point a varies depending on the
output level of the magnetic amplifier. During “on” period of Q72, the voltage generated by the
secondary winding of T71 is applied to the SR. When Q72 comes on, pulse voltage is induced
across the SR and the magnetic flux density in the SR increases from point a to point b. During the
time the magnetic flux density in the SR changes, the SR blocks the signal. Thus, the output of
secondary winding is stable, changing the pulsewidth.

Currents flow through R57 (for main-inverter primary circuit), R73/R74 (for sub-inverter primary
circuit), and R106 (for –12 V line) are detected by using photo couplers. When the excessive
current flows, the photo coupler conducts and the signal is sent to the over-current signal latch
circuit and then the main-inverter stops oscillating. When the over-current protector activates,
CR33 comes on.

1.4 Handset
1.4 Handset
The handset is connected to the communications unit through the RS-422 serial interface. The data
transfer rate between these two units is 9600 bps. The handset is used for voice calls, controlling
and setting of the MES and monitoring the MES status.
There are two types of handset brackets: RB-2721B and RB-2721B/362. The RB-2721B does not
have a telephone distress alert button and the RB-2721B/362 does. Either the RB-2721B/362 or
the IB-362 (Telephone distress alert button unit) is used mandatorily, otherwise the error message
"Telephone Distress Box cable abnormality" appears.
The communications unit is factory-set for the usage of the IB-362. When the distress button on
the hand set is installed, unplug J18 on the CPU board, and plug the PH5P connector wire into the
HANDSET port.

3.7 OID/DID setting
For example, if the SES installed to provide 3 telephones, 1 facsimile, 1 9.6k data, 1 telex, and 64k
HSD, OID/DIDs for these should be:
Handset: 01
Telephone-1: 02
Telephone-2: 03
Fax machine: 11
9.6k data (PC): 21
Telex machine: 31
64k data: 42
The following explains how to enter OID/DIDs when you do not receive OID/DIDs, but IMNs
from the authority. For example, a given vessel applies for and receives 8 ID numbers. Of these
numbers, 3 are voice, 1 is fax, one is Telex, one is MSD, one is HSD/56 and one is HSD/64.
399999990 voice
399999991 voice 2
399999992 voice 3

3-11
3.7 OID/DID setting
399999996 HSD/56
399999997 HSD/64
In this scenario, a person calling the vessel from a shore phone would call 399999990, and the
handset would ring. If they dialed 399999991, the phone that was plugged into port two would
ring.
If someone wanted to send a FAX to the vessel, they would dial 399999992, and port number 3
(FAX) would then ring. The fax machine would be plugged into port three, and would then answer
the call and receive the fax.

The sensor produces a voltage proportional to the rate of rotation about the sensor’s input axis. For
example, the EL sensor detects pitching and outputs the voltage to the PCU to change the elevation
angle. Thus, the antenna points toward the satellite even when the ship pitches.

There are two SW REG boards: 110V and 220V. Before replacing the board, make sure that the
specification of the board matches the ship’s mains. If J2 on the board has jumper plug, P2, the
board is used for 110 VAC ship’s mains. If not, it is for 220 VAC ship’s mains.
For 100-115 VAC SWREG: 16P0180A (Code No. 004-445-290)
For 220-230 VAC SWREG: 16P0180B (Code No. 004-445-690)
Power Alternation
There are two types of power supply unit: 110 Vac and 220 Vac. The alternation of power
specification is not possible in the field because of no availability of the necessary instrument to
adjust the input over- and low-voltage protector circuits. If the ship’s main is stable, the power
supply unit can be used for both 110 Vac and 220 Vac with the following modification.
For 110 Vac ship’smains: Connect the jumper plug P2.
For 220 Vac ship’smains: Remove the jumper plug P2.

At power up, when the elevation angle is changed, and when the ocean region is changed,
1) MES searches the strongest spot beam in signal level.
2) After the completion of the channel scanning, the registration of the ocean region is
made on the NCS common channel. Thus the NCS knows the area where MES locates.
- Tx Channel
Transmission channel in use is displayed. Inmarsat B system uses CH6000 (1626.5 MHz)
to CH14000 (1646.5 MHz). Default setting is CH10000 (1636.5 MHz).
At every call request, MES sends AZ and EL data to NCS. The spot-beam identities are
advised to SES via the NCSC Bulletin Board to allow identification of the appropriate
spot-beam for signaling purposes. If appropriate spot-beam signaling chancels are not
available, the SES will select a global-beam channel.

Appendix 1 Inmarsat System
1. About Inmarsat
The International Maritime Satellite Organization (Inmarsat), founded in 1979, is the international
governing body for maritime satellite communication. Its purpose is to provide global
communications for ships, land mobile and aircraft, using satellites to overcome the problems that
exist with conventional radio communications.
2. Geostationary Satellites
The type of satellites used for maritime communication are geostationay satellites. Four satellites,
one for each of four ocean regions, are placed in nearly 36,000 km-high 24-hour circular orbits
rotating in sync with the earth, providing mobile-to-land, land-to-mobile, and mobile-to-mobile
communications.
The satellites remain fixed over a given place on the earth's equator, so an Inmarsat subscriber is
always within coverage of a satellite.
Geostationary satellite
Speed: 11,070 km/h
Revolution: 23 hrs 56 mm
Altitude: 35,860 km above Equator
3. Service Area
The Inmarsat system divides the world into four regions and each region is covered by its own
satellite. The regions are Atlantic Ocean Region-East (AOR-E), Atlantic Ocean Region West
(AOR-W), Pacific Ocean Region (POR), and Indian Ocean Region (IOR). Two regions are
required in the Atlantic ocean in order to provide complete coverage.

4. Configuration
The Inmarsat communications structure comprises three major components:
- The space segment
- The Ground segment
- The Mobile earth station (MESs)
The ground segment comprises a global network of Land Earth Stations (LESs), Network
Coordination Stations (NCSs), and a Network Operations Center (NOC). Each LES provides a
link between the satellite and the national/international telecommunications networks. The large
antennas used by the LESs to communicate with the satellite for its ocean region are capable of
handling many calls simultaneously to and from the MESs.
A CES operator is typically a large telecommunications company, which can provide a wide range
of communications services to the MESs communicating through the LES.
A Network Coordination Station (NCS) is located within each ocean region, to monitor and
control the communications traffic within its ocean region. Each NCS communicates with the
LESs in its ocean region, and with the other NCSs, as well as with the NOC located in the Inmarsat
headquarters, making possible the transfer of information throughout the system. The NCSs are
involved in setting up calls to and from MESs.
The Satellite Control Center (SCC) controls the Inmarsat satellites. The Operation Control Center
(OCC) is the nerve center of the system and is located at the Inmarsat's headquarters in London.
The OCC provides continuous, round-the-clock coordination for all functions in the Inmarsat
system.

5. Inmarsat-B Services
The lnmarsat-B maritime satellite communication system provides digital telephone (voice),
facsimile, telex and data (9.6 kbps) and HSD services. Use of the latest digital technology means
lower toll charges than in lnmarsat-A, since high output power satellites are not required and data
is transmitted at high speed.

8. Overview of communications
8. Overview of communications
8.1 Access control and signaling
The channel assignment methods in the Inmarsat-B system are based on centralized control at the
NCS for services using SCPC (Single-Channel-Per-Carrier) communication channels (telephony
and SCPC data) and decentralized (distributed) control at LESs for services using TDM (Time
Division Multiplex)/TDMA (Time Division Multiplex Access) communication channels
(telephony). The transmission of assignment information to an MES is always on a signaling
channel originating from the same earth station (NCS or LES) as that which performs the channel
assignment function.
The following explains the examples of the channel assignment. For ship-originated SCPC calls:
The MES request message is received by the addressed LES. The LES sends a request to the NCS
for channel assignment, and the NCS assigns a channel in he appropriate satellite spot-beam, if
available, or a global beam channel is assigned if an appropriate spot-beam frequency is not
available. The NCS then transmits the channel assignment information to both the LES and MES
on the NCSI and NCSA channels respectively.
For ship-originated TDM/TDMA calls, the MES request message is received by the addressed
LES which then performs the assignment function and transmits the assignment message to the
MES and NCS on the CESA and CESI channels respectively.

8. Overview of communications
For ships located in a satellite spot-beam coverage area, channel assignments are made in the
appropriate spot beam if a suitable frequency is available. The information contained in the MES
request or response burst indicates the spot beam in which the MES is located. If the required
spot-beam frequency is not available at the NCS (for SSPC calls) or at the LES (for TDM/TDMA
calls), or the MES is not in spot-beam coverage, a global beam frequency is assigned. However, it
is to be noted that all signaling channels will be in the global beam.
Bulletin Board
The bulletin Board information (contained as separate signal units transmitted on the NCSC
channel) provides MESs with current network status information for all ocean regions as regards
signaling channel frequencies (except those of the NCSC channel), spot-beam frequencies,
preferred spot-beams, various CES capabilities, locations of operational and spare satellites, the
base for calculating the random time interval between two successive MES request sequence
initiations and the base time interval between two successive activation of the MES spot-beam
selection process.

6) Voice channel
The voice channel is a Single-Channel-Per-Carrier (SCPC) digital channel supporting a voice
coding rate of 16 kbit/s. All voice channels use Offset-Quadrature Phase-Shift Keying (O-QPSK)
at 24 kbit/s. The FEC coding rate is 3/4 for voice channels.
Forward voice channels (CESV) use voice-activated carrier switching. In order to enable an MES
engaged in a call to distinguish between long speech pauses (from the shore-based talker) and
long-term channel interruptions, the LES transmits a dummy burst periodically every 15 seconds
during speech pauses exceeding 15 seconds.
The frame duration of all voice channels is 80 ms. Voice activation (burst-mode) is used in the
CESV. A preamble and a Unique Word are transmitted in front of each voice spurt to commence
the burst, and thereafter the framing bits occur every 80 msec. The 80 ms transmission frame is
divided into 4 blocks, each comprising a 24-bit signaling field and a voice field. A sub-band
signaling channel is formed in the voice channel by combining the sub-band bits in each frame
into a standard 96-bit signal unit. A 1404-bit data field is FEC-encoded at the rate of 3/4 to 1872
bits. Thus, the channel rate (24 kbit/s) is calculated by dividing 1920 (1872+48) bits by 80 ms.
The telephone voice coder converts analog input signals into digital signals using 64 kbit/s PCM
techniques sampling at 8 kHz. The 64 kbit/s data is converted into the 16 kbit/s data by the
Adaptive Predictive Coding (APC) algorithm.

8) HSD channel
The 56/64 kbit/s SCPC data channel can be used to carry traffic at either 56 kbit/s or 64 kbit/s
information rate. In both cases, the channel rate is 132 kbit/s, with O-QPSK modulation and
rate-1/2 FEC, and a minimum channel spacing of 100 kHz.
The figure below shows the 64 kbit/s HSD channel format. The 56 kbit/s HSD channel format
has spare bits of 160 bits and 640 bits in each data field and each frame respectively.

Reference)
SB.SIG: Sub-band signaling
In voice and data channels, the 80 ms transmission fram is divided into 4 blocks, each comprsing a
24-bit sub-band signalling field and a 210-bit data field. A sub-band signaling channel (DSUB) is
formed by combining the sub-band bits in each frame into a standard 96-bit signal unit.
