A special report has shown that human activities are wiping out an average of three
animal or plant species every hour. This is equal to 150 species a day, and between
18,000-55000 species a year. The main finding of this report is that we must slow down
the worst spate of extinction since the disappearance of the dinosaurs 65 million years
ago. Scientists and environmentalists have identified a range threats to creatures and
plants as diverse as whales, Iberian lynxes, wild potatoes and peanuts. Global warming
is adding to existing threats such as land clearance for farms or cities, pollution and
rising human population. In order to deal with these challenges, we need to move
rapidly, and with more determination at all levels-global, national and local.
Many experts believe that the world will fail to meet the goal, set by political leaders in
2002, of a major reduction in the rate of loss by the year 2015. Rates of species loss are
currently rising by more than a thousand times natural rates.
