ACTIVITY 1 / MAKE UP CLASS 1

1. What are the various branches of science related to/contributors to Environmental

Science? (Enumerate 6)

There are various branches of science that relate to Environmental Science.

Six (6) of these branches include biology, physics, agriculture, sanitary engineering,
general public health and medicine. Biology is the study of all living organisms or was
once alive. It includes plants, animals, microorganisms and us humans. People who
study this field are called biologists, they study the structure, function, growth, origin,
evolution and distribution of living organisms. Additionally, physics is the science
dedicated to understanding how our world and the universe behaves and why it does
what it does. The study of nature at its most base level – matter, behavior and
motion, energy types, time and space, and their actions and interactions. On the
other hand, agriculture is considered as both an art and science. It is a science
because it utilizes technologies developed on scientific principles such as crop
breeding, production techniques, crop protection, economics, etc. to maximize yield
and profit. Furthermore, sanitary engineering is a design and construction specialty
that solves issues concerning public health. It aims to build new sanitation systems
and renovate existing structures to improve health and safety. Proper sanitation is
essential to preserve the health of humans and wildlife. Moreover, general public
health is the science of protecting and enhancing the health of individuals and their
communities. In order to achieve this objective, healthy lifestyles are encouraged,
research is done on how to prevent illnesses and injuries, and infectious diseases
are found, stopped and dealt with. It is concerned with protecting the health of entire
populations. And lastly, medicine is a field of health and healing. It aims to promote
and maintain health and wellbeing by diagnosis, treatment, prevention of disease,
medical research, and many other aspects of health. The main difference between
public health and medicine is about the patient, public health’s patient is typically a
community or the population while in medicine a patient is an individual.
2. Select one from your identified branch of science and discuss how it relate to
environmental science. (Present specific example)

I chose agriculture as a science that relates to environmental science. Base from

Study Australia, agriculture helps us gain knowledge about global, regional and local
issues from food production and farming, to food security and maintaining a safe and
balanced environment. Both agriculture and the environment concerns about our own
natural resources helpful in the existence of both biotic and abiotic factors. Agriculture in
places has an effect on how the ecosystem functions, because of how living things
interact with nonliving things. The most important factor or agriculture is its contribution
to sustain life by providing food that biotic factors need to survive. How it relates in
environmental science provide both negative and positive factors. One positive relation
of it is about sustainable agriculture, that has three main objectives: economic
profitability, social and economic equity, and about a healthy environment. Sustainable
agriculture makes various practices such as using methods to promote soil health,
conserving water and to lower the pollution level on farms. It aims to sustain farmers,
resources, and communities. Sustainable agriculture provides practices that is
ecologically sound, promotes a healthy biodiversity and sensible management of natural
resources. A specific example of this is the lates hydroponic farm opened to visitors
located in Batangas. It is a type of urban farming showcasing innovative and modern
agricultural farming technology. It does not only focus on solving agricultural challenges
in the Philippines but also providing a sustainable environment wherein it features a
climate-resilient greenhouse buildings, water remains in the system and is reused, it also
intends to use zero to minimal farm chemicals resulting in a decrease of carbon footprint.
However there also negative factors of agriculture relating to the environment. Although
there are farms or industries of agriculture that helps in building a sustainable
environment, there will always be an entity that doesn’t care about it. Some agricultural
ventures receive a high rise in demand because of it production levels became high. A
large-scale conventional farming may rely on using fossil fuels, pesticides, antibiotics, or
synthetic fertilizers. These factors can be harmful to the environment and destroy the
balance in the ecosystem. That is why, as we determine the relation of agriculture and
environmental science we can come up with solutions and theories that will help in
maintaining the ecological relations in the environment. People must have an objective
that agriculture should always have a positive impact in the environment to maintain the
well-being of all biotic and abiotic factors.
