Welcome
Startling new iPads could be just around
the corner. Let’s hope so!
As I write this the Internet is abuzz with
rumors that a new iPad Air 6 and a new
iPad Pro with an OLED screen are on
the way from Apple. Both the iPad Air
6 and OLED iPad Pro are expected to
have similar dimensions, though the
latter will get thinner bezels and will
be thinner overall, thanks to the OLED screen. Most of the
design differences are internal, with the iPad Air 6 tipped
to receive an Apple M2 chip and the iPad Pro expected to
get the new M3 chip. It looks like we’ll have to wait a while
longer to get the rumored M4 chip on the iPad platform.
There’s also talk of a new Apple Pencil 3 and Magic
Keyboard being released as well.
The iPad Air hasn’t been updated for over 2 years now,
so it’s well overdue an upgrade. The iPad Pro remains
Apple’s biggest and best iPad for graphic design, viewing
content, music production, video and photo editing, and
anything else you can think of. With its expansive display
and powerful core, the iPad Pro is the most portable
processing power you can get from Apple without
buying a Mac. The benefits of an OLED iPad Pro include
improvements to battery life, potentially thinner and lighter
tablets, and improved contrast and color reproduction.
Hopefully we can bring you a review of one of these
new marvels next issue, but until then, enjoy the issue.

B ack when the iPad was first released in 2010,

it was criticized as being a decent device for
consuming media, but not much use as a
productivity machine. Now, almost a decade and a half
later, things have changed dramatically.
There is so much you can do with your Apple tablet. In
fact, it’s so versatile, some people decide to use it as an
alternative to a desktop computer. And why not? Simply
connect it to a keyboard case and you have a perfectly
viable notebook.
If you need more storage, you can use a USB–C flash
drive or portable drive. Pair an Apple Pencil, and you’ve
an excellent digital drawing tool. And with Apple’s Pages,
Numbers and Keynote productivity apps, you can work on
the go too.
The iPad is perfect for the creative user. There’s plenty
of powerful, capable art packages available, as well as
in–depth photo editors that go above and beyond the
already impressive editing tools offered by the Photos
app. For musicians, there’s GarageBand and for video
editors iMovie, with third–party apps for those who need
a little more. And yes, the iPad is great for watching and
streaming videos, reading ebooks, playing console–quality
games and more.
In this feature, we take a look at what you can do
with your trusty iPad, whether you’re working on the go,
creating fine art, making a movie or simply enjoying your
hobbies. With our help, you can get the most from your
Apple iPad and the latest version of its operating system,
iPadOS 17.

Multitasking for
greater productivity
You can get a lot more done if you
master these important iPad features

O n your iPad, there are several ways you can

multitask. The most obvious is Split View, whereby
you divide the screen, with one application on one
side and another on the other. You can then drag content
between them, quickly and easily. You can even open the
same application twice if you choose.
To open a second app in Split View, drag up from the
foot of the screen to open the Dock, and either drag a
second application out of the Dock onto the left or right
side of the screen, or tap the App Library, and drag an app
to the left or right. You can drag the line dividing the two
apps to resize them. You’ll need an iPad Pro, 5th gen iPad
or later, iPad Air 2 or later, or iPad mini 4 or later.
Alternatively, Slide Over lets you open a second
application in a smaller floating window, which is by default
on the right side of the screen but can be moved to the
left. You can have multiple apps open in Slide Over mode;
to switch between them, simply drag the line at the foot of
the Slide Over window upwards and hold it until the apps
appear as thumbnails. Then just tap the one you want.
To close a Split Screen or Slide Over app or switch
between the two multitasking modes, tap the “…” icon
at the top of an app and choose the option you want
from the menu.
Picture–in–Picture
Another useful multitasking tool is Picture–in–Picture
mode. This lets you watch a video or FaceTime while doing
something else. In the video application, tap the icon with
the white rectangle pointing inwards to a black rectangle;

the video pops out and is superimposed onto the iPad’s

screen, where you can drag it or resize it. Alternatively, Watch a video
while watching a video or on FaceTime, swipe up from or FaceTime
the bottom of the screen to display the Dock and choose while using
another open app. The video appears in its corner. To another app.
close the floating video window, tap it to open the controls,
then tap the two–rectangles icon again. Not every app is
compatible with iPad multitasking, but key Apple apps are.

Pages, Numbers
& Keynote
Apple’s iWork apps on the iPad are
ideal for working on the go

A pple’s iWork suite for iPad — that’s the Pages word

processor, Numbers spreadsheet, and Keynote
presentation app — have gone from strength to
strength. While the iPhone versions of the apps are fine
for viewing and editing docs on the go, the larger screen
offered by Apple’s tablet makes the iPad’s iWork apps as
powerful and easy to use as their Mac counterparts.
To get the most out of Pages, Numbers and Keynote, Pages is great
you ideally need a keyboard. Apple’s own Magic Keyboard for writing, and
works well, as it offers a trackpad that’s great for the you can do a
precision needed when selecting a spreadsheet cell or surprising

too. The Apple Pencil is an excellent optional extra that it considering

it to write by hand, with
your handwriting being
converted into editable text.
One of the best things
about Pages, Numbers and
Keynote is that if you save
your work to their respective
iCloud folders, you can pick
up where you left off on
another device, or even
from a web browser, which
is very convenient. You can,
for example, start writing a

letter or memo in Pages on
your home Mac, save it to
iCloud and then continue

with it on your iPad on the train. If you created a Numbers

spreadsheet at work and want to add to it at home over
the weekend, you can easily do that too. And if you need
access to one of your iWork documents when you’re out
and about without your iPad or notebook, you can check
it on your iPhone, or there’s the option to pop to the
local library and access your documents online at
www.icloud.com. You can even make your edits directly
from the browser.
All this for free
If you need to send an iWork document to someone that
doesn’t use Apple devices, you can export them to their
Microsoft Office equivalents, as PDFs, and several other
formats depending on the app. For example, Pages can
save as EPUB, Plain Text and RTF documents, and Numbers
can export to CSV or TSV.
Best of all, Pages, Numbers and Keynote are free for
anyone with a Mac or iOS/iPadOS device, and have been
since October 2013. If you don’t have them on your iPad
already, it’s a good idea to download them and give them
a go — it’s surprising how easy they are to work with.

— you have the ability to add images,
display information in tables, create
animated effects and transitions, and
more. First, download Keynote from

the menu.

3 Look at templates
Find a template you like, and tap it
to download and open it. Its title is

Photography & art

Because the iPad isn’t only for office apps…

T he iPad is ideal for creating digital art, especially

if you have an Apple Pencil, and is also good for
photo editing. In fact, the Photos app – bundled
with iPadOS – includes a powerful photo editor that helps
you really get the most from your snaps.
The iPad’s touchscreen and the Apple Pencil’s precision
drawing, low latency, tilt sensitivity and pressure sensitivity
(unless you have a USB-C Pencil) make it an ideal
environment for creating digital masterpieces with apps
such as Procreate, ArtRage, Adobe Fresco and Affinity
Designer. A word of warning, though. These apps give you
all the tools you need, but don’t expect them to produce
your artwork for you. They help you make the most of your
skills, but they won’t paper over a lack of skill.
Its a similar story with photo-editing apps. Apple
Photos is as much as most people need, but if you want You can produce
to take things further, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom some truly

There’s also Pixelmator, Snapseed, Photofox, Prisma with an iPad and

available for the Apple tablet,
ranging from very straightforward
apps for simple retouching jobs
to high-end suites that keep even
professional photographers happy,
but might confuse the enthusiastic
amateur. Once again, the simpler
apps with automatic photo tuners
are easy to use, but don’t expect a
more comprehensive editor to do
everything for you.

Music & video

You can create amazing sounds
and clips using your Apple tablet

T he iPad has always been an excellent device

for enjoying music and videos, but as it grew
in power and scope, it became a superb tool
for creating media too. Popular everyman–level apps such
as the iMovie video editor and GarageBand music creator
were ported from the Mac to the iPad, with redesigned
interfaces built to take full advantage of the tablet’s
touchscreen. Last year Apple’s pro–level media creation
apps Final Cut Pro (video editor) and Logic Pro (music
creator) were also brought to the iPad, again with
interfaces built around the touchscreen.
It’s amazing how few compromises have been made
in bringing these applications to the iPad. Apple’s tablet
might be smaller than the Mac, but with the latest model
of iPad Pro boasting an Apple silicon M2 System–on–a–
Chip (SoC), it’s certainly not lacking in power. The results
you can achieve using media creation apps, third–party
as well as the aforementioned Apple software, certainly
reflect this.
The key advantage of having these apps on the iPad
is you can create movies and music on the move, but
when you’re at home you can hook up to an external
monitor. If it has a Lightning connector you need the
necessary adapter, but if it charges using a USB–C or
Thunderbolt port, you might not. Details are available at
https://apple.co/3Ij5Sjr.

N aturally, your iPad isn’t limited to the tasks we’ve

most productive thing you can do on your iPad is to use
the App Store efficiently. Remember, the search engine

you want to do and the search results give you apps that fit
the bill. For example, if you type “catalog record collection”
into the search field, you’re shown appropriate apps. Type
“website builder” and you’re offered apps that help you
build websites.
There’s scarcely a limit to what you can do on the
iPad. With a popular tool like Duolingo you can learn
another language, and for straightforward translations
there’s Google Translate and Apple’s own Translate app

environments, play exciting or relaxing video games, surf
the web and more. The sky’s the limit.

Transcripts allow you to read a podcast as it happens.

Think of it as the lyrics feature in Apple Music, specifically
for your favorite shows. It’s not only a fantastic accessibility
feature, but it’s also one of the best new additions to a
podcast app in years.
Not only is it easy to enable transcripts but Apple says
the feature is available for all new podcast episodes shortly
after the episodes are published. For older episodes, you
might have to wait a little longer, but all episodes will
receive transcripts over time. Here’s how to use transcripts
for podcasts on your iPad and experience episodes in a
whole new way.

How to enable transcripts

Enabling transcripts in Apple iPad must be running iPadOS 17.4

Podcasts on iPad is incredibly to access this feature, but once
simple. To do so, open Podcasts and enabled the setting is carried over to

How to get to grip with transcripts

1 Start a search
One of the best elements of
transcripts is the ability to search
podcasts for specific words. This
allows you to easily filter through
podcasts to get to topics that are
of interest or to find some of your
favorite segments. To do so tap
Search on the transcript page.

2 Find a segment
Most podcasts have different
segments to structure the show.
One of my favorites in the iMore
podcast is called “New Heights” and
in the show, there’s a segment called
“New News.” By typing “New News”
into the search field I can jump
straight to that part of the episode
without manually trying to find it.

3 Skip ahead
When using transcripts you can
easily skip through a podcast by
tapping anywhere on the text.
Just like lyrics in Apple Music, the

cnI elppA :stiderc egamI

audio will skip forward or back to
the exact word you’ve tapped on.

4 Text selection
Is there a phrase in the podcast
episode that you want to share with
your friends or keep as a reminder?
With transcripts you can select text
by holding down on a word of
choice. Tap Select Text… then tap
copy. You can then paste the words
wherever you want.

5 Read rather than listen

You can use transcripts without even
listening to a podcast by simply
tapping the 3 dots at the top right of
your display then tap View Transcript.
You’ll now get the whole episode in
text form without needing to even
listen to the audio.

6 At a glance
When listening to a podcast you can
check what’s coming up by scrolling
up on the transcript. The transcript
will get smaller and allow you to

see the whole episode at a glance
without skipping the audio forward.

podcast that is recorded in a different
language? Transcripts is available in
English, Spanish, French, and German
and it’s easy to translate the text.
Simply follow the text selection step

Fantastic for getting a glimpse at
podcasts in other languages.

8 Accessible at heart
Transcripts for Apple Podcasts has
been built with accessibility at the
forefront. Podcast producers can
make speaker names available so
you can know who’s speaking when
and the font and color contrast are
designed for easy reading. Users
who are deaf or hard of hearing
can now experience podcasts
without ever tapping play.

9 Turn off transcripts

While transcripts is a fantastic
feature, sometimes you might want
to turn it off to appreciate the full
screen podcast art. Simply just tap

the transcripts button under the
volume controls again to disable
transcripts and go back to a regular
podcast experience.

allowing access to everything else for older kids, there are
plenty of options to ensure a safe online experience. In
this article, we are going to show you how to get started
with parental controls, how to set different types of content
blockers, and how to prevent Siri from bypassing your
restrictions, to respect your rules and privacy.

How to set up restrictions

1 Turn on Screen Time

iPad that allows you to control your
screen usage and make informed
decisions on how you or your child
should use the device, through the
setup of content restrictions, app
limits, and more. To enable it go
to Settings > Screen Time > App
& Website Activity > Turn On

2 Child iPad set up

When you set up Screen Time you
will be asked whether the iPad
belongs to you or a child. If you are
setting up for a child, you will be
asked to setup further settings such
as time or app restrictions, and a
safety PIN code, before entering the
main Screen Time landing page.

3 Navigate to

How to create whitelists & more

1 Allowed Websites
Within the Web Restrictions settings you
will have the option to leave all websites
unrestricted, limit adult content as a
basic blanket of protection, or only allow
specific websites. Allowed Websites
is the most restrictive setting, ideal for
young children as it will only permit
navigation to a few handpicked URLs.

2 Add a website
To add a website go to Settings >
Screen Time > Content and Privacy
restrictions > Content restrictions >
Web Content > Tap Allowed Websites.
Then click on Add website under the
Always Allow section > Insert URL.

3 Blacklist
If you would rather instead create a
blacklist of never allowed websites,
while leaving the rest of the content
unrestricted then tap on Settings >

Screen Time > Content and Privacy
restrictions > Content restrictions > Web
Content > Select Limit Adult Websites.
Then click on Add Website under the
Never Allow section > Insert URL.

How to enhance your restrictions

1 Siri Restrictions
Once all your web content
restrictions are set up, you
might want to take a step further
to enhance your settings, by
preventing Siri from bypassing
your blockers. In. To do so go
to Settings > Screen Time >
Content and Privacy Restrictions>
Content Restrictions > Siri.

2 Don’t Allow Web Search

Once you are in the section, you
will see the option to allow/not
allow Siri Web Search and/or Siri
Explicit Language. By not allowing
Web Search, you will prevent Siri
from navigating to a website when
prompted, adding an extra layer
of protection to your child’s
internet experience.

3 Next Steps
You will be able to make changes
and edit your restrictions at any
point, whether it’s to add extra
layers of protection, or to give
your child more freedom as they

grow older. Have a good browse
of what else is available within the
Screen Time menu to customize
your experience.

Adventure Kingdom is a very different game from the one

you might expect with the Tamagotchi name but it’s just as
cute and charming.
In Tamagotchi Adventure Kingdom, you play Mametchi —
a young kid who is as helpful as he is energetic. Suddenly,
one night, a meteor comes hurtling down, disrupting nature
and the towns around you. Energy from this meteor forms
geysers that block off your path and cause trouble for the
inhabitants of the world. Like a drifter
You move in as quickly as you can, only to discover the Tamagotchi
meteor is actually a very friendly pal called Meteoritchi, was born to
who wants to help you get things back on track. That’s the walk alone.

kind of game Tamagotchi Adventure Kingdom is. It’s cute,

it’s charming, and tension never really rises past the start
of the game.
To put it simply, it is a life sim game, where you have to
cut up logs, dig up weeds, and shake trees for resources,
which can then solve quests and puzzles for people around
the world. This then allows you to collect hearts which seal
up the geysers. The gameplay loop is simple and, if you’ve
played Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley, you have a good
idea of what is expected of you as you play.
You get a camp near the meteorite which initially starts
with just a tent but can be upgraded with new decorations
and more. It can feel slow at points, as the game directs you
through easy mechanics and quests. This wouldn’t necessarily
be a problem but the game is so derivative of other life Need resources?

day and night system, where certain events can be found at

certain times, and an energy system so you don’t cut wood
all day and ignore all those NPCs. It works well to balance
exploration and resource gathering, whilst never letting you
do too much of either.
Characters are mostly quite charming, with them all having
their own unique personalities and quirks. Mametchi can
customize their look at any moment too, which, alongside
decorations in your base, allows you to really shape your own
world. Tamagotchi Adventure Kingdom, with new updates
since it has launched, seems set up to keep fans busy for
quite some time and it has a good foundation, even if some

curated guides for specific destinations. As someone who
likes to take traveling very easy, rarely planning anything in
advance, Wanderlog has given me a new insight into travel
planning that not only makes it exciting but also efficient.
With a big birthday trip to New York City coming up shortly,
my partner and I have been using Wanderlog to plan a pizza
itinerary for every single pizza shop we read about online
— now we’ve got a fully mapped-out route of over 30 pizza
places. You’ll need Wanderlog Pro to use your travel plan
offline, but considering most places have internet access, it’s
really not that much of a limitation.
Wanderlog allows you to break places to visit into
multiple lists, so you can differentiate from restaurants, shops,
bars, cafés, museums, you name it. This is fantastic for the
map feature, which then gives you the option to filter based
on specific lists so the map doesn’t get too cluttered. If you
pay for Wanderlog’s premium subscription you can even
export the map with all your recommendations to Google
Maps, allowing you to use a different navigation app when
on vacation.
