Background Study for Assigned Definition:

The field of water quality assessment plays a crucial role in environmental management
and public health. Traditional methods of water quality monitoring involve time-
consuming and labor-intensive processes, often limited to specific sampling points.
With the advent of remote sensing technologies and the use of Unmanned Aerial
Vehicles (UAVs) and Internet of Things (IoT) devices, there has been a paradigm shift
in water quality assessment. These advanced technologies enable real-time, spatially
extensive monitoring, offering a more comprehensive understanding of water bodies.
Problem Formation:
Despite the advancements in remote sensing and IoT, there exists a significant challenge
in developing a robust and integrated system for water quality assessment. The
problem lies in the need for a comprehensive Water Quality Index (WQI) that
combines data from remote sensing and UAV/IoT devices to provide accurate and
timely predictions. Issues such as data integration, calibration, and validation pose
challenges that need to be addressed for the effective implementation of such a
system.
Need Analysis/Motivation:
The motivation for this research stems from the increasing demand for efficient water
quality monitoring methods. As population growth and industrialization intensify, the
pressure on water resources rises, necessitating precise and scalable monitoring
systems. The integration of remote sensing and UAV/IoT data holds the promise of
enhancing our ability to monitor water bodies, allowing for early detection of pollution
events, and facilitating timely interventions to safeguard water quality.
Research Gap Identification:
Existing research in the field often focuses on either remote sensing or UAV/IoT
technologies individually, lacking a comprehensive integration approach. There is a
gap in the literature concerning the development of a unified framework that
combines these technologies to create a reliable WQI for water bodies. Additionally,
calibration and validation methods specific to the integrated system need further
exploration.
Proposed Objectives for Research Contribution:
● Develop an integrated framework for collecting and processing remote
sensing, UAV, and IoT data for water quality assessment.
● Establish calibration and validation procedures tailored to the integrated
system to ensure the accuracy of the Water Quality Index.
● Implement a real-time prediction model for water quality based on the
integrated dataset.
● Evaluate the proposed system in a selected water body, considering different
environmental conditions and potential sources of pollution.
● Contribute to the advancement of water quality monitoring methods by
providing a comprehensive and scalable approach that leverages remote
sensing and UAV/IoT technologies.
