Introduction
This little book explains how to crochet little
Kokeshi Amigurumi dolls. A basic knowledge
of crochet is required.
Amigurumi is a Japanese word, meaning a

stuffed animal toy usually made from crocheted
yarn and having an oversized head. Amigurumi
is a combination of the Japanese words “ami”,
meaning crocheted or knitted, and “nuigurumi”,
meaning stuffed doll.
Kokeshi dolls are traditional wooden dolls from

northern Japan. They have an enlarged head.
You can decorate these little dolls with flowers,

bows or ribbons. You can make them as a
keychain or decoration. They make a nice gift
for Christmas.
Materials
1. 3.25 mm hook (US: D/3.25, UK: 10)
2. No 2 yarn (Sport, Baby): Schachenmayr Catania any color you like. (for UK you can use
DMC Petra No3)
3. 6 mm safety eyes or Black Beads for eyes
4. Polyester fiberfill
5. Tapestry needle
Size
The Kokeshi dolls are 2.7 inches/ 7 cm high.

ch = chain
sc = single crochet
st = stitch
sl = slip
rnd = round
tog = together
Notes:
- This project is working in continuous rounds, do not join or turn unless otherwise stated. Mark first
stitch of each round.
- For the first round: you can do 6 sc in magic ring instead of "Ch 2, 6 sc in second chain from hook."
Body and Head
Starting from top of the head, crochet down to bottom of the body.
Rnd 1: With Cream (head color), ch 2, 6 sc in second chain from hook. (6)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around. (12)
Rnd 3: (Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st) around. (18)
Rnd 4: (2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts) around. (24)
Rnd 5: (Sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st) around. (30)
Rnd 6-9: Sc in each st around. (30)
Rnd 10: (Sc in next 3 sts, sc next 2 sts tog) around. (24)
Insert safety eyes 5-6 sts apart between rnds 7-8, stuff head.
Rnd 11: Sc next 2 sts tog around. (12)

Rnd 12: Sc next 2 sts tog around, changing to Blue (body color). (6)
Rnd 17: Sc next 2 sts tog around, leave long end for sewing, fasten off. (6)
Stuff the body by using tip of scissors to push the stuffing in, sew the opening close.
With Red yarn embroider mouth.

Hair Cap
Rnd 1: With Turquoise, ch 2, 6 sc in second chain from hook. (6)
Rnd 4: (2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts) around. (24)
Rows 10-13 are working in rows.
Row 10: Sc in next 24 sts, turn. (24)

Row 11: Ch 1, sc in next 24 sts, turn. (24)
Row 12: Ch 1, sc in next 7 sts, sc next 2 sts tog, sc in next 6 sts, sc next 2 sts tog, sc in next 7 sts,
turn. (22)
Row 13: Ch 1, (sc in next 4 sts, sc next 2 sts tog) 3 times, sc in next 4 sts, leave long end for sewing,
fasten off. (19)
Hair Bun
Rnd 1: With Turquoise, ch 2, 6 sc in second chain from hook.
(6)
Rnd 6: (Sc in next st, sc next 2 sts tog) around, leave long end
for sewing, fasten off. (12)
Put hair cap on and sew. Sew hair bun on middle top of head.
