Part 1

After reading chapter 2 and chapter 3, please answer the following questions:

1. How can you learn about the different types of learning styles of your future students?

Observation is very important to identify what types the students are. After

observation, teacher can differentiate active and passive students; quiet and chatty

students; dependent and independent students and so on. Besides, different teaching

strategies such as group discussion, presentation, project and so on may let teacher

learn more students’ learning types because they may engage more if they found it

more comfortable to learn. Thus, teacher can know those students like this kind of

teaching strategy.

2. How best can teachers adapt to different learning styles?

Teachers should have different teaching strategies such as lecture, visual aids, hands

on experiences, or written task for different learning styles students. For the

assessment, teachers can hand out the assignments, exams, group discussion, project,

laboratory and so on to assess students who have different learning styles so that

students can have different platform to show what they have learnt.

3. What is one strategy that a teacher has taught you?

One strategy that I learn from my teacher is show and tell. In my previous early

childhood education courses, show and tell can let students share what they brought

to class. The thing that they brought is their favorite toy so that students can be very

confident to tell the class how to play that toy. Also, students who are sitting and

listening can learn how to respect when others are talking.

4. What is one message that has been effectively stated to you from a teacher?

One message I learnt from my teacher in my previous early childhood education

course is that if you look for a high paid salary job, it should not be pre-school or

kindergarten teacher. It inspires me so much because it always reminds me that I

should be delighted because of the students, not only the salary.

5. How will you know as a teacher that the lesson was effective?

Each lesson should have a lesson plan with the assessment method. Teacher can know

if the learning objectives has been achieved in that lesson. During the lesson, teacher

can interact with students or do observation to check their understanding to adjust the

teaching strategy if needed. If the students are not paying attention in the class, they

might feel bored or the materials are too easy or difficult.

6. What can you do to reevaluate? How will you know it is effective?

Observation in class is a very effective way to reevaluate because students’ behaviors

and attitudes showed how effective the lesson was. Also, their quizzes, exams,

assignments, or projects’ presentation can show if they obtain the knowledge from the

lessons. Learning objectives and assessment in the lesson plan is a good measurement

to see if that lesson or teaching strategy is effective.

7. Where can teachers go to gain more professional knowledge?

Before running a new curriculum or program in different subject, there should be a

training course for teachers to get a better knowledge how it works the best. Also, As

the society keeps changing every day, teachers can get some advanced degree or

different from their previous major but related to education courses or certificates so

that they can get the updated information to teach students.

8. How would you get students attention?

Establishing a consistent routine can let students be more secure because they know

what will happen next. When they feel secure, they can be more concentrating in class.

Also, some call and response attention getters can be used in class to get their attention

such as “one, two, three, eyes on me” and “macaroni and cheese, everybody freeze.”

Interaction with students is important too so that students know teacher is caring about

what they are doing or thinking, especially when ask questions to check for

understanding.

9. What strategies would you use?

Building a positive relationship with students will be my first step because trusting

relationship can strengthen the bonding and it will be easier to establish some

classroom rules and routines. During lessons, having students’ contributions is

important as well as giving them lectures. From students’ contribution, I can know

how much they engage in class so that I can reflect on how effective my lesson is.

Furthermore, peers’ interaction is good for students as well because they need to learn

social skills by communicating with each other. It also can be a motivation for students

to learn with peers.

10. How would you correct misbehaviors?

I will talk to the student directly to know why he or she behaved that way. Then, I will

mention the classroom rule if it is related. The student may have consequence after

telling he or she not to misbehave and he or she still chose to misbehave. Students

need to learn there are consequences. If the misbehavior is serious and affects the

whole class, I will discuss with them in the whole class to stop students imitating each

other.
